					THE NECKLACE WRITING ASSIGNMENT

Using your notes from class as well as the story, write a one-paragraph response to the
following question:

At he beginning of the story, we are introduced to the protagonist, Mathilda Loisel. The
author, Guy de Maupassant, uses many tools of characterization to depict her values and
her personality. In a one-paragraph response, analyze and describe her character. Use
specific examples from the text to support the claim you make about her character.

Hints on organizing…

Start the paragraph with a one-sentence answer to the prompt. This is your CLAIM about
Mathilda, your OPINION on her character, your thorough and detailed description of the
kind of person she is. Then build your argument by referring to the text and using
examples and explanation to prove your claim. You may wish to follow this format:

Statement: This is the statement of what your first piece of evidence will prove. Write it
in a sentence.
Evidence: This is the direct quote or specific reference to the text that proves your point.
Explanation: This is your thoughts and logic connecting the evidence to the claim. The
passage/quote/reference does not speak for itself! YOU MUST CONNECT IT TO
YOUR CLAIM.

The acronym for this process is SEE (so you can see your point).

An “A” response will do the following:

   1. Have a clear thesis that begins the paragraph and gives an insightful description of
      Mathilda Loisel.
   2. Use at least 3 specific examples to prove the claims in the thesis.
   3. Uses the SEE (Statement, Evidence, Example) model to incorporate evidence.
   4. Is well written, legible, and makes few errors in the use of English.
