Stephan McGuire
Stephan is President and Founder of Coalition for a Sustainable Africa. Based in Santa Monica, CA, CSAfrica is an international coalition, of nonprofit organizations offering sustainable solutions for grass-roots initiatives to empower the people and communities of Africa. For most of the past 11 years, Stephan has been a Producer with Tree Media Group and recently was one of the Producers of the documentary The 11th Hour, narrated and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. He also produced Woody Harrelson's Voice Yourself in 2003, Co-Directed the 11th Hour Action campaign as well as webportals for Global Green USA, the Official 2000 Presidential Campaign Library for the Council on Foreign Relations, as well as for California's Heal the Bay. His personal mission is that The 11th Hr isn't only a film, but a campaign and Human Rights movement. He has taken it upon himself to keep a momentum going. This year he founded GreenTownACTION!, an American program documenting on-theground sustainable action in a ʻgreenʼ YouTubeʼ type web portal to be launched in the autumn of 2009. In April, 2009, Stephan was the recipient of the Green Dot Awardʼs “Visionary of the Year”. Bringing 11th Hour Action to Africa, Stephan was Executive Director of GAWA, (Green Awareness Africa), where with Founder Gareth Amos, he spent most of 2009 implementing sustainability programs in Namibia, Africa before handing the charity over to local Namibians. Among the projects spearheaded is “Green Zone Schools”, “2010 Green Awareness Africa Conference & Expo” and an anti-plastic-shopping bag campaign for Namibia. In partnership with the Namibian Nature Foundation, he has also directed an upcoming documentary focusing on Namibiaʼs position as a role model nation in sustainability. All of these projects are officially mandated programs, directly partnered with the Namibian American Embassy, 5 Namibian Ministers including the Prime Minister and President, and large African corporations who are taking the lead in environmental awareness and action. Stephan has studied sustainable, earth-restorative farming and living practices called "Permaculture" on the island of Hawaii in 2001-2002 and in Costa Rica 2003-2004, where he became a certified Permaculture Teacher. Permaculture techniques focus on making our communities healthy, culturally rich, and self-reliant models of integrated living. He attended colleges and universities in Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles. He is in preproduction on a documentary called "Losing My Religion", which through interviews, will document Jehovah's Witnesses as they leave the authoritarian sect and find their way in the world. He has formed his own production company called Hungry Creature and begins production in January 2010 in Sarasota, Florida.
