              ACCESS TO LIFE SCIENCES ELECTRONIC SUBSCRIPTIONS
                                 FROM ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD

 Remote access is necessary to use certain electronic resources that are available only to IUB faculty,
 students, and staff. Access to these resources will require authentication whenever a user is connecting to
 the IU network from off-campus through an Internet service provider (AOL, MSN, Earthlink, BlueMarble,
 etc.) or through a network connection at another university or business.
          NOTE: access through the IUB modem pool does not require remote access methods.

   ► FOR TEMPORARY REMOTE ACCESS:

         Most Life Sciences electronic journals can be accessed though the LSL web page

             URLs on this page route remote users through a proxy server that requires authentication

             When the dialog box appears, enter your ADS username and password, you should have access
              to the IUB Libraries electronic subscription to that journal
             Some titles will not be available through the proxy server because of publisher licensing
              restrictions

       Online abstract indexes and other e-journal titles are accessible remotely through the Find Information
          page (http://www.libraries.iub.edu/findinfo)

              Reference databases or e-journal titles can be found with a title search in the Search All
               window; databases are browsable in the Databases by subject, e.g., Biology, Biochemistry or
               Medicine sections.
              Web of Science, Ovid Medline and Biological Abstracts (and any others displaying this icon
               are available to remote users)

► MORE PERMANENT REMOTE ACCESS (ON A MACHINE YOU USE REPEATEDLY)

   If you want seamless access to library resources and/or need to connect to network file servers or other
   IP-restricted university resources such as the IU Address Book or Network ID Services, you need to set
   up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection. This network connection allows you to authenticate
   and act as part of the IU network when you're connected to an off-campus network or through an ISP.

       For the adventurous, here are the appropriate configurations (based on Windows OS)
         o In the network connection wizard, the name of VPN server is:
                iub-remote-vpn.indiana.edu
         o After completing the wizard, select connection Properties (right-click connection icon)
         o Options tab: Check the box labeled Include Windows logon domain.
         o Security tab.
                Select Advanced (custom settings) and then click the Settings button.
                    "Logon Security" >> Allow these protocols.
                    Only Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-CHAP v2) should be checked.
         o Networking tab: In the "Components checked are used by this connection" section, only the following
             should be checked:
                Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
                File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
                Client for Microsoft Networks
         o Uncheck the NetBEUI and IPX/SPX Compatible protocols, if applicable.
         o TCP/IP Tab, if present: click the Properties button
                Ensure that the IP & DNS addresses are set to obtain an address automatically
         o You must ensure you are logging into the ADS Workgroup/Domain on startup through the system control panel
             computer name tab (XP & 2000) or network control panel Client for MS networks tab (98)
         o When attempting to connect, the domain should be ADS
