Unit 1: Investigating Travel and Tourism
Context:-
You have just started a new job as a Travel and Tourism Industry advisor to the Government.
You have come from a Travel and Tourism background and were by far the best candidate for
the job; as the tourism industry is changing all the time, it is vital that they have someone who
is up to date on the impact of these developments. Secretary of State for Culture Media and
Sport Andy Burnham has decided that there should be a large focus on the industry in the run
up to the 2012 London Olympics, and is always looking for ways to boost the industry in Britain.
Andy has asked you to contribute to this year’s Global Travel and Tourism Summit where he
would like you to be a speaker. This will be held in four months time in London. Nothing like
dropping you in at the deep end!
With your developing expertise he thinks that you are definitely the right person to lead the
way in this area. You have a lot of research and preparation to do so think that it is best that
you get started straight away. Your section will be an introduction to the topic, outlining the
different organisations in the industry, and how they, as well as tourists themselves, have
been affected by recent developments in the travel and tourism industry
You have been selected not only for your knowledge, but also for your attention to detail. Andy
Burnham has told you that your work can be presented using a variety of software, and is
looking for evidence of your sound research skills. He has asked that you report to him on your
progress along the way.
Assigment handed out: 15th September 08
Deadline:- February half term
Assessor:- Miss Hall
Know the components of Travel and Tourism and how they interrelate (P1, P2, M1)
First things first, you need to outline the eight key components of the travel and tourism
industry. Remember, the guests at the Summit may not have come across these terms before.
Make sure your explanations are clear, and you give real examples of each component to help
them understand.
Task 1 – Using Microsoft Word, produce a document that outlines the following components of
the Travel and Tourism industry. For each component you must
describe what it is and
give examples which relate to
o inbound,
o outbound and
o domestic tourism.
Components that you must describe,
1. Accommodation e.g. serviced, non-serviced
2. Transport e.g. road, rail, sea, air
3. Attractions e.g. natural, heritage, purpose built, events
4. Tour operators e.g. mass market, specialist
5. Travel agents e.g. retail, business, call centre, online
6. Tourism development and promotion, eg tourist boards
7. Trade associations and regulatory bodies, eg Association of Independent Tour
Operators
8. Ancillary services, eg insurance
What to hand in
A word document that describes each of the components outlined above.
Grading criteria
P1 - describe (giving examples including domestic, inbound and outbound tourism) the
components of the Travel and Tourism industry.
Task 2a) – Andy Burnham has reviewed your first piece of work, and although he is pleased
with it, he would like you to explain how the components work together within the industry. He
thinks it is important for everyone at the Summit to be familiar with terms such as “chain of
distribution” and to be able to describe different types of integration and interdependencies
across components, with relevant and up-to-date examples of how the components interrelate.
As your last piece was written, he would like you to produce something visual for this section,
and suggests something similar to the diagram below. This must show how the components
interrelate and work with each other, covering all seven components of the Travel and Tourism
industry. You could set your work out as in the diagram below, make sure your examples are up
to date.
Ancillary

And
Promotion
What you have to hand in
A visual diagram which shows how the different components of the Travel and
Tourism industry interrelate.
Grading criteria
P2 - describe the ways that components of Travel and Tourism interrelate
Task 2b) Explain how the components of the Travel and Tourism industry interrelate.
Excellent! Andy Burnham is very happy with your visual explanation of the interrelation of the
components in the travel and tourism industry. He would like you to focus on some of the
relationships in more detail as he thinks it is important for your audience to have some
thorough examples.
He has asked you to explain the following situations that occur in the Travel and Tourism
industry. For each scenario explain which components of the industry are involved, what they
are doing and how each one will benefit from working together.
1. Outbound - A typical European package holiday taken by British tourists– this will have a
variety of elements working together. Example, you book your holiday with a travel agent, it
is provided by a tour operator who works with accommodation and transport providers.
2. Domestic - Virgin trains working with top UK attraction providers.

3. Inbound – Easyjet, Europcar, Accommodation and Insurance. www.easyjet.co.uk
What you have to hand in
A word document explaining each of the scenarios with no more than 300 words
written on each.
Explaining how the components of the Travel and Tourism industry interrelate.
M1 - explain how the components of Travel and Tourism interrelate, giving examples that
include domestic, inbound and outbound tourism.
Describe the roles and responsibilities of Travel and Tourism organisations within the
different sectors (P3, M2, D1)
You feel that although your research so far has highlighted that the Travel and Tourism
industry has different sectors that operate differently and do different things, you think
delegates at the summit will need to understand more about the different organisations that
operate in the different sectors.
The Travel and Tourism industry is roughly broken down into organisations that exist to make
a profit (profit sector) and those that exist not to make a profit (not for profit sector) but
for some other reason.
Task 3a) - Your are going to research the following organisations and produce a case study on
each. Each case study must be no longer than 1 A4 sheet long and cover these things;
The name, logo and description of the organisation.
o What they do, who they are etc.
The main aims of the organisation; these may include some of the points listed
below.
A description of their roles and responsibilities within the industry, this could
focus on the products and services that they offer their customers or the
industry.
An example from the press showing the organisations role within the industry.
Roles and responsibilities may include;
to meet main organisational aims,
o eg to make profit
o to maximise sales revenue
o to increase market share
o to ensure compliance with regulations
to provide services and products
o eg to other organisations
o for the industry
o for customers
The four organisations that you will be researching are;
Profit Sector: Virgin Atlantic and Thomson
Not for Profit: Visit Britain and Civil Aviation Authority
What you have to hand in
4 case studies, one on each organisation listed above.
Each case study must be no longer than a side of A4.
It must describe what they do and what their roles and responsibilities are within
the Travel and Tourism industry.
Grading criteria
P3 - describe the roles and responsibilities of Travel and Tourism organisations from different
sectors.
Task 3b)
Andy Burnham has just been looking at the Visit Britain website as he is deciding where to
take his next holiday – he likes to set an example and holiday in Britain rather than jet setting
off somewhere abroad! He is impressed, and definitely thinks you should include more about
them in your section of the resource pack. At the moment he thinks that they work like
Thomson but isn’t sure whether this is correct.
He knows that you will be able to set him straight on this and you have told him that you will
produce a report that explains the similarities and differences between the two organisations.
Some of the aspects that you might want to consider are;
- what their role is
- who they work with
- what products and services they provide
What you have to hand in
A written document comparing Thomson and Visit Britain.
The document must be no longer than 2 sides of A4.
Grading criteria
M2 - compare the roles and responsibilities of Travel and Tourism organisations from
different sectors
Task 3c)
Andy liked your thoughts on the previous task and you have now been asked to assess how the
operation of travel organisations is affected by the sector it is in. For example you could
assess why a lot of mass tour operators now employ most of their staff in call centres instead
of putting more staff in there shops. Why is the sector these tour operators are in causing
them change to their operations?
Discuss the issue that you want to research with your teacher and decide upon a topic that
you are going to cover.
What you have to hand in
Written assessment of how the operation of a Travel and Tourism organisation is
affected by the sector that it operates in.
Grading criteria
D1 - assess how the roles and responsibilities of Travel and Tourism organisations from
different sectors affect their operations.
Describe recent developments that have shaped the present day Travel and Tourism
industry (P4)
So far so good; Andy Burnham is happy with all of the reports and articles that you have
provided so far and feels that guests at the Summit will be able to get a lot of information
from them regarding the travel and tourism industry today. However, he feels that you could
perhaps provide some information about the history of the industry. He has asked you to
research the industry and highlight some of the key things that have shaped the market and
made it what it is today.
In order to do that you have decided to research the following four developments and
describe how they have come about and how they have changed the Travel and Tourism
industry.
1. The growth of the budget airline and the impact that it has had and continues to have on
the numbers of people travelling abroad on holiday.
2. The increasing popularity of new long haul destinations.
3. The death of the high street travel agent and the rise in the use of the internet by
consumers in making their holiday arrangements.
4. The way in which airlines have changed the prices that they charge to reflect their falling
profits. For example, fuel levy charges, checked in luggage, express boarding etc.
Task 4a - Your research must address each of the above developments and explain how they
have changed the Travel and Tourism industry in the past and what impact they will have on
the industry in the future. In describing how these developments have shaped the industry
you may want to consider how the following have changed…
Products and services, business operations, consumer demand, types of organisations,
competition, numbers employed in travel and tourism industry and contribution to countries
gross domestic product (GDP)
What you have to hand in
A written document covering each of the four developments outlined above.
Grading criteria
P4 - describe recent developments (from the 1960s onwards) that have shaped the present
day Travel and Tourism industry.
Understand the trends and factors affecting the development of Travel and Tourism (P5,
M3, D2)
You have arranged a meeting Mr Burnham as he is aware that things are constantly changing in
the industry and knows that it is important to understand what factors have affected industry
trends in recent years. You have decided to go to your meeting equipped with a presentation
which looks into the trends and factors that have affected the industry. You plan to use this
in your presentation to the Summit once you have run it past Andy.
The main factors and trends that you have identified include:
Trends:
Increased frequency of holidays
Greater flexibility of booking and products
more independent travellers
adventure travel
new destinations
growth and expansion of regional airports
Factors:
natural disasters
health warnings
epidemics
terrorism
environmental issues
cost of travel
Task 5a - You have decided to base your presentation on 3 trends and 3 factors of the
Travel and Tourism industry which you will have to research so that you have as much detail as
possible – you want to make a good impression! It is important that the trends and factors
you research for your presentation are from the last five years and link with the
developments looked at in 4a. You will be using PowerPoint to create this presentation.
What you have to hand in
A powerpoint presentation that describes 3 trends and 3 factors and how they
have affected the development of the Travel and Tourism industry.
Your presentation must be at least 5 minutes long.
Grading criteria
P5 - describe the key trends and factors that will affect the development of Travel and
Tourism.
Task 5b – Fantastic feedback – Andy loved your presentation and said he is always keeping his
eye on the newspapers for anything that is happening in the Travel and Tourism industry. He’s
noticed that there is always something happening: the opening of terminal 5, launch of the new
airbus plane, natural disasters happening across the world etc.
As you’re the travel and tourism expert, he wants to know what you think about these issues.
He’s asked you to look back at the developments in task 4 and explain how these have shaped
the industry.
e.g. The development of new winter sports resorts in Eastern Europe has led to the growth of
specialist tour operators catering to a new market for low-cost winter sports packages.
You also need to explain how key trends and factors will shape the industry in the future.
What you have to hand in
A Powerpoint presentation.
Explaining how the recent developments outlined have shaped the Travel and
Tourism industry in the past and how it will affect it in the future.
Grading criteria
M3 - explain how recent developments have shaped the present day Travel and Tourism
industry and how key trends and factors are likely to shape the industry in the future.
Task5c – Andy Burnham loves the work that you have done, and is delighted that all of your
research indicates that there are many opportunities for businesses in the industry. He thinks
that delegates will benefit from hearing about how you think businesses should be reacting to
the trends that you have just presented to him, in order that they take advantage of these
opportunities.
He has asked you to choose two of the trends and factors you have outlined for task 5b and
suggest how the Travel and Tourism industry and selected organisations could respond to take
advantage of these trends.
Discuss this with your teacher and decide which issue you will focus on.
What you have to hand in
A 600 word report recommending and justifying how the Travel and Tourism
industry could respond to trends that have been identified and discussed with
your teacher.
Grading criteria
D2 - recommend and justify how the Travel and Tourism industry could respond to key trends
and issues affecting the future development of Travel and Tourism.
