Organization
Founded in 1982, LOA’s nonprofit mission is to “Develop professionals and foster innovation to enhance
logistics in the National Security environment”. We are comprised of 3,000+ active duty military, civil
service, defense contractors, and international military.
We do this by developing premier logistics professionals, enhancing logistics in the National Security
environment, fostering logistics innovation and collaboration, while operating as a world class
professional logistics organization. We have three primary methods of accomplishing these goals;
quarterly we publish a scholarly logistics journal, support 70+ world-wide chapters providing professional
development and finally we conduct an annual conference which furthers logistics knowledge while
developing logisticians.

Mission for the Chief Operating Officer
LOA has been growing steadily and is now seeking to create a full-time COO that can handle the
organizations day-to-day business, fundraising, and accelerate organizational growth. The National Board
members are looking for a visionary leader who is responsible to assist the National Board in refining and
executing a strategic plan. In addition, the COO is a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic, and process
minded leader with experience in organizational growth, teams with the executive management
volunteers, and develops a logistics problem solving culture among a diverse and talented group. The
COO must be a leader who is able to help the volunteers deliver measurable results that provide world-
wide logistics professional development and assist in building teams to solve logistics issues. Importantly,
the successful COO will have the skills, sensitivity, and personal confidence to tap into the power that
each volunteer member of the team brings to this mission. While it is essential the COO bring efficient
and effective systems to increase the productivity of the organization, is it also critical that the team retain
the creative spark that drives the organization and tap into the membership to solve logistics issues
through “crowd sourcing”.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the LOA National President, the COO will lead daily internal operations and will have the
following responsibilities:
1. Working in partnership with the LOA National Board, create and execute the strategic five-year
plan and implement new processes and approaches to achieve it
2. Coordinate with our conference contractor and assist in preparing the annual conference theme,
and finding conference speakers
3. Develop and execute a strategic plan for all fundraising development activities within LOA
(including giving programs, corporate and foundation solicitations, major individual gifts, planned
giving, and capital campaigns) to help further the LOA mission. Create and maintain positive
relationships with donors, event volunteers, and acknowledge gifts.
4. Plan, prepare agendas, record and track major action items for National Board meetings and
teleconferences
5. Lead the performance management process that measures and evaluates progress against
organization goals
6. Provide for all staff a strong day-to-day leadership presence; bridge national and regional
operations and support an open-communication policy among all staff
7. Provide oversight to the LOA sub-committee chairs (Membership, Chapter Support, etc.)
8. Identify geographic growth opportunities and priorities
9. Communicate the branded message internally and externally by assisting with publications
(monthly newsletters, Exceptional Release, chapter communication, etc.)
10. Analyze the current technology infrastructure, scope out the next level of information technology
and financial systems that support the growth of specific programs and the organization overall
11. Develop and implement systems for reporting, measuring, and supporting revenue generation
12. Administrative aspects including proposal preparation and grant writing
13. Present to the National Board, at quarterly meetings, activities, fundraising efforts, and
successes/challenges
14. Publish and maintain a comprehensive organizational calendar of events
Key Qualifications
As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must believe in the core values of LOA and be driven by the
mission. The candidate should demonstrate a passion for breaking new ground to lead social change.
In addition, the candidate will likely have management experience with a non-profit organization.
Additional requirements are:
1. Results—7 years+ proven track record of exceeding goals and a bottom-line orientation;
evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis,
wisdom, experience, and judgment; high level of business acumen, and the ability to balance the
delivery of programs against the realities of a budget; problem solving, project management, and
creative resourcefulness.
2. Strategic Vision and Agility—ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and
trends, and incorporate them into the organizational plan
3. Capacity Building—ability to effectively build organization capacity, develop topnotch processes
that ensure the organization runs smoothly
4. Leadership and Organization—exceptional capacity for managing and leading people; a team
builder who has experience in scaling up organizations; ability to connect volunteer staff both on
an individual level and in large groups; capacity to enforce accountability, develop and empower
topnotch leaders from the bottom up, lead from the top down, cultivate entrepreneurship, and
learn the strengths and weaknesses of the team so as to put volunteers in a position to succeed
5. Action Oriented—enjoys working hard and looks for challenges; able to act and react as
necessary, even if limited information is available; not afraid to take charge of a situation
6. General Management—broad experience with strategic development and planning, budgeting,
business analysis, finance, information systems, and marketing
7. Solid educational background—undergraduate degree required; MBA or similar advanced degree
highly desired, CSFRE desired or Certificate in fundraising management
Location
LOA is chartered in Washington DC, but does not maintain a brick and mortar office.
