56.5.1 Current students have been written to regarding the proposed change to the Law Major
programme. The proposal is to change from a BA to an LLB. There will be no structural changes to the
programme, it already is a Qualifying Law Degree, but the title does not reflect this. The change is hoped to
improve recognition of its qualifying status.

Only six students replied all were in favour. This proposal will be considered the Law Field / Programme
Committee next week.

56.5.2 Anne Griffiths and Jane Pickford met with new Combined Honours staff and raised issues of
concern. It was agreed that routine admin tasks would stop being sent through to Anne and Jane.

Written proposal RECEIVED regarding ‘Killer Modules’. Noted there is no definition of what constitutes
a killer modules, it is generally applied to modules with poor results.

It was the view of the committee the approach should be to take action in modules of concern to improve
the standard of student work in the first instance, for example increased use of Web-ct. Only if that fails should
any process be put in place for staff to account for the results.

         This was APPROVED.

Written and Spoken report received from George Laurencin (Employment and Placement Officer) on
Interview Practice.
Following interviews carried out by Fiona Fairweather and George Laurencin for CAB placements; it was
felt it would be beneficial to offer practice interviews to level 2 and 3 Law students.

It was also suggested, and agreed, to include completion of a mock application form.

Criminology students already have an employability module and carry out interview techniques, CV and
letter writing with support from George.

The scheme will not be compulsory but students can gain extra curricular point for taking part. Fiona
Fairweather and George Laurencin will carry out the interviews.

Student reps were requested to pass this concern along to the students to respect the facilities which have Italic
been improved for their benefit. Staff will also make announcements in lectures.

58.3 A student rep was raised concern that at a recent, Barclays menorting day event, a student turned up who
did not have a place. There were a limited number of places and a waiting list was in place. However the student
turned up on the day and was allocated a place by a member of staff from Barclays. It was difficult to then turn the
student away, but other students who could not get a place were not happy this student was allowed to attend.

It was agreed the action taken by George Laurencin at the time to allow the student to attend, given that
Barclays staff had already seen the student, was correct. It was acknowledged that he was put in a very difficult
position. The student is to be seen by the Head of School regarding this matter.
