Types of Libraries
  Type Libraries: a specific category of
   data such as
    News - NEWS
    Company Information - COMPNY
    Legislation - LEGIS
  Topic Libraries: information on a
   specific subject matter such as:
    Entertainment - ENTERT
  Geographic Libraries - information
   about a particular region such as:
    North/South America - NSAMER
      WAYS TO SEARCH
        LEXIS-NEXIS
BOOLEAN - uses a combination of
 words and logical connectors
FREESTYLE - allows users to enter a
 search description by typing in a
 question or phrase
EASY SEARCH - provides step-by-
 step searching assistance. Users
 answer questions about the
 information needed

         WORDS
Words and Spaces
  A word is one or more characters with
   no intervening spaces - &, $, +, ?, :, . -
   are treated as spaces
Plurals and Possessives - not
 necessary but LEXIS will not find
 “children with child”
Universal Characters let searchers
 include all variations
  ! : at the end of a root word
  * : space holder (wom*n)
   SELECTING SEARCH
        WORDS
Compound Words - will read as
 one word - anti-trust or antitrust
Noise Words - not searchable
 because they are so common:
  personal pronouns
  forms of the verb “to be”
  conjunctions
  connectors (and, and not, or, but
   not)
    CONNECTORS
OR finds documents which contain
 either or both of the search terms
AND finds documents with both of
 the search terms
W/n finds documents with words
 within some number (n) of each
 other. (n) can be any number up to
 255It skips over noise words when
 counting.
   Doctor w/10 medicine
   CONNECTORS
W/s specify words within the same
 sentence
W/p specify words within the same
 paragraph
PRE/n first search word will precede
 the second by a specific (n)

 segments depending on the type
 of document
To identify the segments for each
 library or file, before entering the
 search press the Segmts (.se) key
 and the list of available segments
 will display

           RESULTS
When LEXIS-NEXIS completes the
 search, you will see a message telling
 how many documents matched the
 search. Search results can be viewed as:
CITE LIST - list of retrieved citations
KWIC - Key Words in Context shows terms
 with a block of text of 15 - 25 words
VAR KWIC - Displays terms with a larger
 block of text of 30 - 50 words
FULL - shows the entire retrieved document
SEGMENTS - shows the selected segment
   MODIFYING SEARCH

MODIFY (m) lets you add
 any connector such as “and”
 to narrow the search

FOCUS (.fo) allows searchers to specify
 words to be highlighted in the search results
  Searching General Motors, you can use the
   FOCUS feature to concentrate on a specific
   vehicle Enter the (.fo) followed by the search
   terms. To exit focus enter “.ef”
MORE (.more) automatically builds a search
 for you and retrieves more documents like
 the one found. The MORE feature retrieves
 25 documents that most likely resemble the
 model document.

Display the document you wish to
 save to disk (file) or print
Select PRINT DOC (.pr)
The Document Delivery Screen will
 appear allowing you to either print
 on a printer or copy to a disk after
 signing off.
