15   request the Department of Transportation to name the interstate
16   interchange of Interstate 20 and Road 204 at exit 51 in Lexington
17   County as the “Charlie Rountree Jr. Junior Golf Interchange”, etc.,

11   TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
12   TO NAME THE INTERSTATE INTERCHANGE OF
13   INTERSTATE 20 AND ROAD 204 AT EXIT 51 IN
14   LEXINGTON COUNTY AS THE “CHARLIE ROUNTREE JR.
15   JUNIOR   GOLF   INTERCHANGE”     AND  INSTALL
16   APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THE ROAD
17   INDICATING THIS DESIGNATION IN RECOGNITION OF
18   MR. CHARLIE ROUNTREE’S TIRELESS COMMITMENT TO
19   THE GAME OF GOLF WITH EMPHASIS ON THE JUNIOR
20   GOLF PROGRAM IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

22   Whereas, Mr. Charlie C. Rountree, Jr. was born in Savannah,
23   Georgia, on September 22, 1926. He served as a Staff Sergeant in
24   the Medical Corps from 1945-1946 as part of the Japanese
25   Occupation Force. After his military service, Mr. Rountree
26   attended the University of Georgia and received a Bachelor of
27   Science degree in Forestry in 1949; and
28
29   Whereas, in 1954, Mr. Rountree married Betty Patricia Terry and
30   then went to work for the South Carolina Forestry Commission
31   until retiring as Section Chief of Forest Management in 1986. Mr.
32   Rountree and his wife have two sons, Charlie C. Rountree III and
33   Mark Rountree; and
34
35   Whereas, Mr. Rountree was named Outstanding State Employee
36   Richland/Lexington County in 1985, served on the South Carolina
37   State Employees Association Board of Directors in 1989, and
38   served on the Lexington County Recreation and Aging
39   Commission from 1990-1994; and
40
41   Whereas, as chairman of the South Carolina Golf Association
42   Junior Championship from 1972-1999, he was responsible for

 1   bringing the Championship to the Country Club of Lexington and
 2   establishing what would become twenty-eight straight years that
 3   the club has hosted the event. The Country Club of Lexington will
 4   now host the Championship every five years beginning with the
 5   fiftieth year in 2008; and
 6
 7   Whereas, the South Carolina-Georgia Junior Team Matches is the
 8   longest running interstate matches in the United States and Mr.
 9   Rountree served as chairman from 1976-2000. Former participants
10   include three major championship winners, Larry Mize (Masters),
11   Bob Tway, and Davis Love III (PGA). In 2001, the Championship
12   trophy was named Rountree-Cox after the longest serving
13   chairman from each state. The trophy is on permanent display at
14   the Country Club of Lexington; and
15
16   Whereas, Mr. Rountree was a founding board member and
17   chairman of the South Carolina State Employee Golf Tournament
18   and champion numerous times, and a founding board member and
19   chairman of the South Carolina Forestry Commission Golf
20   Tournament and champion numerous times; and
21
22   Whereas, Mr. Rountree served as president of the Country Club of
23   Lexington in 1969, the first Club Champion in 1967, and Senior
24   Club Champion in 1986. He was also a South Carolina Golf
25   Association Father-Son Champion in 1973 and 1975; and
26
27   Whereas, Mr. Rountree scored a double eagle October 26, 1963, at
28   the Hampton Country Club, which was a world record for longest,
29   standing for over two years at 575 yards, he has made thirteen
30   holes-in-one, the seventh in 1961 was the highest number recorded
31   according to Golf Digest, and he was president of the South
32   Carolina Golf Association in 1972 and 1977 and has served
33   continuously on the board since 1967. He was inducted into South
34   Carolina Golf Hall of Fame in 1978 and was president of the Hall
35   of Fame from 1981-1991; and
36
37   Whereas, the General Assembly is pleased to recognize the
38   accomplishments of Mr. Charlie C. Rountree, Jr. and considers it
39   appropriate that the Department of Transportation name the
40   interstate interchange of Interstate 20 and Road 204 at exit 51 in
41   his honor. Now, therefore,

 1   Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
 2   concurring:
 3
 4   That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution,
 5   request the Department of Transportation to name the interstate
 6   interchange of Interstate 20 and Road 204 at exit 51 in Lexington
 7   County as the “Charlie Rountree Jr. Junior Golf Interchange”, and
 8   install appropriate markers or signs along the road indicating this
 9   designation in recognition of Mr. Rountree’s commitment to the
10   game of golf with emphasis on the Junior Golf Program in South
11   Carolina.

13   Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
14   the Department of Transportation and Mr. Charlie C. Rountree, Jr.
15   of Lexington.
