This is the year that was in 2008 hasn’t that gone fast???
Domestic Basketball came under the banner of the Craigieburn Eagles Basketball Association
and that we welcome Tracie, Carol and Silvana for their attention to detail in getting this
together and adding the tracking of results as well as the transparency on the website.
Oz Ball! what a success this has been with Tracie, Carol and Silvana with Dennis Mac’s
guidance and implementation of the program has been welcomed along with his team of
Coaches and Apprentice Coaches to make this an overwhelming success and good for the
future of the Craigieburn Basketball Association well done to all the volunteers for support.
Senior Domestic Men’s and Ladies is flying on the men’s side with Craig, Trish and their
support crew have continued this to be a at level of outstanding success and now juggling the
court space to accommodate their success. Tracie and the Domestic Ladies have just
completed their first season and about to start their second season which can only be a future
asset to this Association. We are looking for more of a support crew for this on a Wednesday
night also those that are interested please let me know your level of interest.
Junior Representative now finishing that long season of basketball that for a parent seems
as though there is no end to this level of basketball. Parents first of all have had the greatest
success this season being the greatest support crew to our Junior Representative players
travelling this year from Traralgon to Ballarat and Geelong is a commitment that is greatly
appreciated and that is not often thanked for this commitment. Trevor Brooks U18 Boys,
Dennis Mac’s U20 girls team were the two teams we were able to claim a premiership
CONGRATULATIONS to Trevor and Dennis and their players for rising to the occasion to claim
the title. The other unsung heroes are the U12’s with Jason Albon and U18’s with Warren
Taylor Girls teams who made the level of Vic Championship earlier in the year which what all
our teams strive to achieve and to play at that elite level which they did with a great sense of
pride. Well done to all Parents, Coaches, Team Managers & Players for their efforts throughout
2008. A great deal of organisation from Peter & Rohan has been instrumental in holding this
group together with their support with a minutes notice.
BIG V Saw our Men’s team being competitive although gaining those end of season injuries
prevented a better end of year result. Dennis Mac stood up to the challenge of once again
guiding our young basketballers in the right direction for the future of the Craigieburn
Basketball Association. The support crew that assisted Dennis in Wayne Bullock and Craig
Rhodes has seen these Guys attracting more players to their domain. Warren, Bear, Brendan
and the Team Managers in Delene and Kath did a sensational job in adding the icing to the
slightly underdone cake leading towards the end of the season proper to steal the
Championship off the Divisional leaders in Ringwood and Keilor. Finally Big V will not exist if it
wasn’t for the team of volunteers that are ably lead and organised by Shane Barbeta who did
this without any interruption, Shane will be sadly missed within this role in 2009 and they are
“HUGE” shoes to fill.
Finally a thankyou to my fellow committee members that stuck to their commitment for the
betterment of basketball within Craigieburn in Jenny, Cath, Tracie and the late inclusion of
Martin to fill some necessary holes at this level. The year certainly has been challenging for all
of these people to ensure the focus of junior basketball was not lost to other sports. Well done
and thankyou once again for your support and guidance.
Be sure you can be part of the Craigieburn Basketball Association future when you attend the
Annual General meeting on Wednesday November 12th at 7.30pm at the Senior Citizens’ Room
of the Functions Facility at the Leisure Centre
Once again thank you to all the volunteers and parents for their support in making this what it
Craigieburn Eagles Big V Women 2008
I’ve said it a few times but if someone had have told me after the last regular season game, an
ugly home loss to Southern Peninsula, that we could still win the championship, I would have
told them they were crazy.
Such was our year. Our incredible 2006 season was punctuated with winning the last 8
regular season games while in 2008, we never strung more than 3 wins together at any stage
of the year. We finished the season with 11 wins and 9 losses and at one point even had to
wait for other results to fall our way just to make the finals.
And then, the finals. Four of the most amazing, outstanding and exciting games of basketball
you are ever likely to see. It was as though someone had hit a switch and this Eagles team,
determined and passionate as they know they can be, demanded nothing less than the title.
We knew we were fortunate to be in the finals and the girls essentially made a decision not to
waste the opportunity.
We snuck into the post-season in fourth place and met league leaders Ringwood who had won
11 games straight coming into the finals. They had only lost 2 games all year. To deny them
of a chance to even play off for the championship was always going to be an enormous task.
But again, there was no task too enormous for the Eagles girls this August and we bundled
Ringwood out in 2 brilliant games.
Keilor were the “in-form” team, having beaten Whittlesea twice on the road in one weekend to
make the grand final. Keilor had beaten us the past two meetings, comfortably the last time.
All those who were present at the nest for game one of the grand final witnessed just how little
those regular season results meant to our girls – a 26 point dismantling of Keilor being the
result of a determined group who played smart, committed basketball.
Game two was much more of a fight. 5 points down with less than five minutes left in the
game we looked in trouble but true to form, this Eagles team made their final statement with a
15-2 run to finish the match and steal an unlikely but heartily deserved championship banner!
2008 was a tough year, full of ups and downs. We were never dominant throughout the year
and at times looked simply poor. But if anyone tells you finals experience means nothing, we
were proof that is totally wrong. We knew we had been down that road before and resolved to
do whatever it took to get there again. Our best win streak of the year was our 4 straight
finals games on to a championship.
So the biggest comparison to our 2006 championship is that nobody outside of Craigieburn
gave us a chance but the true trademark of this group, the heart, character and passion,
shone through when it was needed the most. Again, the championship belongs to the girls but
I am truly proud to be able to say I was a part of this extraordinary year.
On behalf of the group thank you to the score table staff, statisticians, floor wipers, Pete on
video, Mitch as MC, Lorraine on the door, Shane for his great work as our delegate and the
club itself for giving these girls the opportunity to represent the Eagles and live this incredible
experience. Personally, a huge thank you to Delene who was magnificent as our team
manager this year, to Bear for his help and another huge thank you to Brendan whose impact
on the program this year has played a massive role in our winning it all. Thank you also to
Kath and Brad for their assistance along the way.
The biggest thank you from me of course is to Kellie, Brooke, Tracy, Kylie, Lauren, Rhiannon,
Kaitlyn, Brea, Jacki, Haylee, Tahlia, Kelsey, Suzan, Hayley, Shannon and Ainslie for the year
they have put together, Girls it is your team and I will never forget the journey you have all
taken me on this year.
Two championships in three years is an incredible result and something this club should be
truly proud of.
Warren Taylor - Head Coach.
From the pen of Peter: (Peter Cooper, Junior Rep Program Co-ordinator)
Another year has come and gone.
We at the Nest have had a tremendous year by all standards.
To see these 22 teams start the year and watch the improvement throughout the year is
This year we started clinics with Ian Stacker and Paul Langford just to offer coaches some
ideas. I for one could not believe these guys’s knowledge. On the game information is a
powerful tool for coaches and when you do coach you never stop learning in this gamel.
The highlight for me this year is seeing so many Craigieburn Eagles kid's playing Big V, in both
the Men and Women program's. To Dennis and Wayne great job in developing so many junior's
to the Big V program. We at the nest would be the only club to have such a wonderful path
way for our junior's. I can see similarities between the Hawthorn Hawks and THE Craigieburn
Eagles men's program. Rome was not built in a day but it was built in 4 years, just ask Alastair
To Warren, what you have done at this club -words just can't describe it. Two premierships in
3 years, the bar is now raised right across our association. Every coach and every team just
wants to get better and better. Our new motto should be "LET'S BE THE BEST WE CAN BE AT
THE NEST". Again so many juniors tasting the Big V experience, with 3 u18 girls now
Premiership players. That's something they will relive for the rest of their lives.
With another 20 or so juniors knocking down the door to be a part of the Seniors, there's a lot
to be excited about in the future at the Craigieburn Eagles.
To the u/20 player's leaving the junior program I thank you for representing Craigieburn and
hope you stay involved with the club in some capacity I'm sure all of the 20's would have
made some special friendships and would have wonderful memories from your experience at
I would like to thank everyone across the association for their time and effort. We must take a
deep breath and realise we are all volunteers trying to be the best we can be.
Thank you again to EVERYONE at the Nest.
Look out for more “NEWS FROM THE NEST” editions from the Craigieburn Basketball
Association in the coming months, to keep you informed on all the latest news.
