CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH RECREATION LEADER- P/T DEFINITION: Under direction of the Recreation Coordinator, this position is responsible for supervising children in an after school environment, including organizing and leading activities for children in the City’s after-school program. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This position requires the candidate to have a general knowledge and interest in sports, arts and crafts, education and leisure activities for youths and adults. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Receives general supervision from the Recreation Manager or Recreation Coordinator as assigned. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Essential Job Duties Organize indoor/outdoor games, arts and crafts; Participate in and teaching recreational activities; Participate in homework assistance; General supervision of children; Maintain a safe program environment for participants and staff; Care and maintain all equipment issued and inform supervisor when there are hazards or equipment replacement needs; Assist with special events; Open and close facilities for rentals; Attend applicable City of Newport Beach Recreation Division trainings and orientation; Work with youth to develop and build basic skills with an emphasis on learning, fun, and sportsmanship; and Recreation Leader- P/T City of Newport Beach Page 2 Perform related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Basic objectives, methods, and techniques of planned recreation; Effective instructional techniques; Arts and crafts and/or indoor and outdoor games for children; and Safe work practices. Ability to: Plan and organize recreation programs for children; Communicate, clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, specifically participants, parents, and co-workers; Appear for work on time; Follow directions from a supervisor; Understand and follow posted work rules and procedures; and Accept constructive criticism. Experience and Training: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: One year of experience in childcare, babysitting, or volunteer work in related field or equivalent OR One year experience in related sport as a coach, player or volunteer Training: Equivalent to completion of the eleventh grade Recreation Leader- P/T City of Newport Beach Page 3 License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license and Red Cross CPR and First Aid certificates must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
