have GCSE “C” grade or equivalent in English Language, Mathematics and Science. The NQF

4. Those applicants working in secondary schools who intend to use the Foundation
degree as a means of entering the Registered Teacher programme should read the following:

Although successful completion of the Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies does give
you the relevant number of credits to enter the Registered Teacher programme it will not
give you the appropriate specific subject knowledge to teach at secondary level.

Those wishing to use this programme to eventually become secondary teachers should note the
following extract taken from the standards as outlined in

‘Qualifying to teach: Professionals standards for Qualified Teacher Status and requirements for
Initial Teacher Training’. 2002

Standard 2.1
Those awarded Qualified Teacher Status must demonstrate that:
They have a secure knowledge and understanding of the subjects they are trained to teach. For
those qualifying to teach secondary pupils this knowledge and understanding should be at a
standard equivalent to degree level.

This is one of a variety of standards which Registered/Graduate Teachers have to meet but it is
important that any applicants for the Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies who are working
or wish to work in a secondary school understand the implications of this requirement. The
Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies will NOT enable participants to meet the secondary QTS
subject requirements laid out in Standard 2.1 as it is generic and not subject specific.
