                                          BUS DRIVER

DEFINITION
Under general supervision operates a transit vehicle over designated routes to transport
passengers in a safe, courteous, and timely manner; and performs related transit work as
required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This fully working level classification is distinguished from the Lead Bus Driver classification by
the lack of supervisory responsibilities and level of experience and expertise required to perform
the duties of Lead Bus Driver.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Illustrative Only)
Essential:
       Operates a transit bus over a designated route in accordance with arranged time
        schedules
       Collects fares, picks up and discharges passengers at pre-arranged locations; monitors
        passenger behavior and maintains safe and orderly conditions aboard the vehicle
       Provides information regarding fixed route and paratransit service to patrons and the
        general public; communicates with other operators and with base station via two-way
        radio
       Attends required safety meetings and training
       Performs special event and charter operations as directed
       Conducts daily pre-trip and post-trip comprehensive mechanical and safety vehicle
        system checks including fluid levels, basic operating systems, and operation of
        wheelchair lift and secured equipment to the standards required under the
        complementary paratransit provisions of the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)
       Performs transit dispatch duties as required.
       May perform minor maintenance on vehicles and transit system infrastructure as
        needed, such as repair of floors, windows, seats; bus benches, shelters, and/or signage
       Cleans transit vehicles, maintains all applicable boarding/mileage records & mechanical
        checklists
       Establishes and maintains a good working relationship with fellow crew members,
        system staff, patrons and with the general public

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
      Safe, defensive driving practices
      California Motor Vehicle Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in public
       transportation
      Basic maintenance of transit vehicles and related equipment

Skill in:
           Operating a transit vehicle safely
           Maintaining order among passengers on a bus
           Good customer service skills
           Understanding and implementing verbal and written instructions
           Proper use of two-way radio system
           Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those in the course
            of work

Education and Experience:

            Completion of twelfth grade or receipt of G.E.D. and six months of experience in public
            transit, a school district transit operation, or driving a commercial vehicle. Possession of
            a VTT Certificate, Passenger Endorsement Certificate, Class A or B Vehicle Operator’s
            License, and Department of Motor Vehicles Medical Certificate/DL-51. Passenger
            transit driving experience preferred.

            OR

            Completion of twelfth grade or receipt of G.E.D., Class A or B Vehicle Operator’s
            License, and two or more years of commercial driving experience and a valid and
            current DMV Medical Certificate/DL-51. Training toward the Passenger Endorsement
            Certificate or VTT Certification will be provided.


Licenses and Certificates:

      A Vehicle Transit Training (VTT) Certificate evidences completion of required training
       administered either by a certified “Vehicle Train the Trainer” instructor or by a State of
       California Certified Instructor of the appropriate transit classification from the California
       Department of Education, Office of School Transportation
      A Passenger Endorsement Certificate permits the licensee to operate public transit
       vehicles equipped with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 26,000 pounds or more.
      All required licenses and certificates must be kept current and valid for the duration of
       employment
      Possession of current and valid Certification for Operation of a School Bus is highly
       desirable
      Possession of current and valid Certification for the operation of airbrakes is beneficial,
       but not required.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
       Physical ability to sit or otherwise remain stationary at work post for long periods of time;
       mobility and strength to occasionally assist passengers weighing up to 150 pounds;
       ability to load/board, tie-down, and unload/alight wheelchair passengers and accessible
       mobility devices; and manual dexterity required to operate vehicle; vision to read
       handwritten and printed materials, hearing and speech to communicate in person and by
       telephone/radio.

        Willingness and ability to work in exposure to weather, vehicular traffic, noise and
        exhaust fumes.

        Willingness and ability to accept assignments in various cultural, physical, behavioral
        and environmental settings.

        Some accommodations may be made for some physical demands for otherwise qualified
        individuals who require and request such accommodations.

Other Requirements:
       Positions in this classification are defined as "Safety Sensitive" per the U.S. Department
       of Transportation Regulations. Individuals hired into these positions will be subject to
       Pre-Employment Drug Testing, Random Drug and Alcohol Testing, Reasonable
       Suspicion Right to Test and Post Accident Drug/Alcohol Testing.

        This class description lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-
        inclusive. Not all duties are necessarily performed by each incumbent. Incumbents may
        be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document
        and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.
