Policy on Recruitment and Selection of Residents

Resident Recruitment
The aim of the OHSU Pediatric Residency Program is to recruit residents who have the
ability to become competent pediatricians. Recruitment decisions are based on prior
satisfactory academic achievement in medical school and on non-academic factors,
which serve to ensure that the resident can perform to the required standards and meet
the requirements for the Program’s Selection Policy listed below.

It is important that individuals selected for pediatric residency training possess the
intelligence, integrity, compassion, humanitarian concern, and physical and emotional
capacity necessary to practice pediatrics. The Pediatric Residency Program is
committed to the principle of equal opportunity. The Program does not discriminate on
the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, cultural or ethnic background,
socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability.
Recruiting individuals from diverse backgrounds is a priority for the residency training
program and these efforts are headed by the Diversity Committee.

The Resident Recruitment Committee coordinates the recruitment of medical students
and other suitably trained individuals for the Pediatric Residency program. The method
of application is via the ERAS system, however at the discretion of the Program
Director an outside of the ERAS system applicant may be considered.


Resident Selection

Applications for first year residency positions are solicited via the Electronic Residency
Application Service (ERAS). Applicants are screened for interviews based upon the
strength of their application with preference given to the following criteria:

      Students of LCME accredited US and Canadian Medical Schools
      USMLE scores greater than the mean (including DO’s).
      Achieving the highest level of performance in 3 of 6 core 3rd year clerkships
       (Medicine, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Surgery, Ob-Gyn, Family Medicine)
      Breadth and demonstrated commitment to extracurricular activities and other
       unique talents
      Strength of letters of recommendation

Applicants from accredited Schools of Osteopathic Medicine must provide USMLE
scores in addition to their COMLEX scores.

International Graduates must meet the following criteria to apply:
           A valid visa
           A valid ECFMG certificate and USMLE Clinical Skills Step 2
           One year of clinical training within the United States or Canada

All OHSU students entering pediatrics are invited to interview. Once interviewed, their
application will be reviewed competitively with all the other applicants. OHSU
students are scored and placed on the rank list in accordance with the same procedures
as students from outside institutions.

Invited applicants are interviewed by 2 faculty members and are scored on their
academics, references, interview, and special qualities utilizing the program’s
standardized Interviewer Score Sheet. Preliminary rank lists are generated by the
average of these scores and 3-monthly rank meetings will be held prior to the final rank
list is reviewed by the Pediatric Residency Education Committee in early February and
adjusted based upon input from the Residency Program Director, Associate Program
Directors, current Pediatric Residents, and a third faculty member’s review of the
candidate’s file. A final rank list is submitted to the National Residency Matching
Program.
