2010 Graduate Commencement Ceremony
Student Speaker Nominations
Purpose
The Carlson School of Management Graduate Commencement Ceremony recognizes student
achievement in the Full-Time MBA, Part-Time MBA, Executive MBA, Global Executive MBA,
Human Resources & Industrial Relations Programs, Master of Business Taxation, Master of
Accountancy, and PhD programs. The Graduate Commencement committee is seeking
nominations for a student speaker at the ceremony who can reflect the broad impact of graduate
education from the Carlson School.
Who Can Submit a Nomination?
Any eligible Carlson graduate student who has been cleared by their program office to
participate in the 2010 Graduate Commencement Ceremony may be nominated by Carlson
faculty, staff or students. Self-nominations are welcome, too.
How to Submit a Nomination
To nominate a student for consideration, please send the student’s name to Jon Ruzek at
ruzek010@umn.edu. The Commencement committee will then ask the student to submit the
nomination form.
To submit a self-nomination, please send the nomination form as a Microsoft Word attachment
to ruzek010@umn.edu
Deadline
March 21, 2010 - Deadline for completed nomination forms to be submitted by students.
Review Committee
The Graduate Commencement Committee will review all nomination forms and select the
student speaker before April 2. The student speaker will agree to have the Graduate
Commencement Committee clear his/her speech in advance of the ceremony. The student
speaker will agree to attend the Graduate Commencement Ceremony on Monday, May 17, 2010,
at 9:00am in Northrop Auditorium. The speech should last 3-5 minutes.

Essay
Please submit a one-page essay outlining the following:
1) Why do you want to speak at graduation?
2) What will be the theme of your speech?
3) What are the main points you’ll convey about your Carlson experience?
4) How will you tailor your speech to make it meaningful for students in all
the graduate programs, not just your own?
