Demographic profile
Summary
The population of the Forest of Dean is 81,901 (mid-2008)
20.8% of the population are under the age of 17 years
19.2% of the population are over the age of 65
The district
The district covers an area of 526 hectares with over 20,000 acres of this
woodland managed by the Forestry Commission. It shares its borders with
Gloucester, Tewkesbury, Malvern Hills, Herefordshire and Monmouth districts.
In 2008, the population of the district was estimated to be 81,901 (Source:
ONS mid year estimate).
The district has a dispersed settlement pattern with four main towns. Lydney
(9,000), Coleford (8,502), Cinderford (8,475) and Newent (5,175). There are
many smaller, very rural, scattered, individual settlements outside the four
main towns where the majority (approximately 58%) of the Forest of Dean
population live.
The population is projected to grow to 93,200 by 2031.

Age bands
The population pyramid shows the age structure of the District’s population. It
clearly shows that the District contains a low proportion of 25-29 and 30-34
year olds, with the 40-44 year age group containing the largest proportions.
20.8% (16,995) of the population are aged 17 and under and 23.1% are of
pensionable age (male over 65 or female over 60). The decreasing number of
children in lower age groups will be compounded by lower numbers in the
main child-bearing age groups (20 to 34 years).

Ethnicity
The 2001 Census provides the most comprehensive information on ethnic
groups in Gloucestershire. The table below outlines the results using the full
16-group classification. It shows that Other White, White Irish and Chinese
are the largest Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) populations in the Forest of
Dean. The overall BME population (all people other than White British) is
1,790 or 2.2%

Ethnicity – School pupils
The 2006/07 annual school level census provides information on all pupils
ethnicity within state schools within Gloucestershire. The table below shows
that the largest non-white group is Mixed followed by Chinese. The overall
number of non-white school pupils is 190 or 3%.

Religion or belief
For the first time in 150 years, a (voluntary) question was asked in the 2001
census about religion. In the Forest of Dean, 61,645 people identified
themselves as Christian. The largest non-Christian group is Buddhist (0.2%)
although a large minority (around 22%) stated that they had no religion, or did
not state their religion.
