Age bands

The population pyramid shows the age structure of the District’s population. It
clearly shows that the District contains a low proportion of 25-29 and 30-34
year olds, with the 40-44 year age group containing the largest proportions.
20.8% (16,995) of the population are aged 17 and under and 23.1% are of
pensionable age (male over 65 or female over 60). The decreasing number of
children in lower age groups will be compounded by lower numbers in the
main child-bearing age groups (20 to 34 years).
