Application for the WEDC John Pickford Scholarship 2011-12
Please type or complete in BLACK INK using BLOCK CAPITALS and return to the address above.

This application form is for the WEDC John Pickford Scholarship. This scholarship will cover 100% of the course fees for your
chosen MSc taught programme (either Water and Waste Engineering or Water and Environmental Management) managed by
the Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) for one year (replacing any Departmental or Loughborough
University scholarships or bursaries you may already have been awarded). The Scholarship is being funded through donations
given in memory of the late Professor John Pickford (the founder of WEDC). The University will award one scholarship during
2011-12, and the standards required are very high.
For entry in 2011 the scholarship application procedure is an open competition. Students may only apply for the scholarship
after an unconditional offer for a place has been made. Students who are in possession of an unconditional offer of a place on
a MSc taught programme (either Water and Waste Engineering or Water and Environmental Management) can apply for the
scholarship using this application form. Priority will be given to applicants having a minimum of two years’ experience of work
in the development or relief sector, and who are nationals of a country classified as ‘low-income’ or ‘lower-middle-income’ by
The World Bank (see Annex A for lists of qualifying countries).
The selection panel will be looking for the very highest academic achievers, and those who will contribute most to development
in their country when they return home after their course. The panel will also be looking for those who clearly demonstrate a
full understanding of the costs involved in coming to the UK and can demonstrate that they have strong motivation and the
initiative to be able to secure funds to cover the remainder of the costs involved.
You are advised to spend considerable effort ensuring that this application reaches the selectors in a form that is clear, well
presented and which reflects your abilities and motivation.

Completed signed applications MUST be received by Friday 1st July 2011 to the address shown
above. Forms received after this date will not be considered.

to provide clear evidence in these of your academic ability, motivation and potential, and of your ability to secure funds to cover
costs for accommodation, subsistence and travel.

3. Personal Statement
This section below is for you to provide additional information in support of your application for a scholarship. You should
outline why you believe you have demonstrated academic excellence and potential, and how you will contribute to the

easily read, though a handwritten statement will be accepted. You may use the space below, or submit this separately
4. Financial Statement
In this section, please provide information about how you intend to fund your studies. We will use this section to identify
students who have already demonstrated the initiative to secure some funding for their studies, but for whom the LU John

Water and Environmental Management) for the successful applicant. The John Pickford scholar will be expected to secure
funds (for accommodation, subsistence and travel) to enable them to attend the programme.

 Your current sources of funds – including who your sponsors are (if any), how much support they have offered, and
any scholarship applications which you have made which are pending a final decision.
 Your family background and parental occupations.
 What your current shortfall of funding is.
We would strongly advise you to submit your financial statement as a typed or word-processed document, as this will be more
easily read, though a handwritten statement will be accepted. You may use the space below, or submit this separately.
Financial documentation and references
If you feel it would strengthen your case to submit evidence of your current financial support – either in the form of references
or letters of sponsorship, please do so.
5. Declaration
I confirm that the above information is correct to the best of my knowledge.
Loughborough University requires the information on this form for the purposes of processing your application for the WEDC
John Pickford Scholarship. All personal information will be treated strictly in terms of the Data Protection Act 1988. Students
registering with the University will be asked to read and sign a data protection statement.
