HUSBAND - Henry Shew or Shuey
1790s - present: Shuey surname variations found in actual records while doing research on this family: Shew, Shue,
Shewy, Shewey, Schwey; Shoey, Sjuey, Shory; and Seehy. Shew/Shewy/Shue were the surnames used by the family
in and around Westminster in Carroll County, Maryland. Shewey/Shuey were the surnames used in and around
DeKalb and Kane Counties in Illinois and Lake Geneva in Walworth County, Wisconsin. Shuey/Shoey/Sjuey were
spellings found in records in Story and Jasper County, Iowa. Many members of the family were illiterate and went by
whatever spelling a clerk thought might be correct.
                          ___________________________________________________
1842 - Henry Shew and Sidney Ann Carr were married by Rev. Hinkle, a Methodist Preacher. In addition, his grave is
located in the graveyard of a former Methodist Church. So I believe he was Methodist.

1850 - 1870: Per several census records, Henry was a shoemaker in Carroll County, Maryland.

1870s - 1950s: HEATH NOTES: Three of Henry's sons and two of his grand-daughters developed and suffered from
severe rheumatoid arthritis. The arthritis was contributory to several early deaths in the family. Sons: Elias Oliver,
Jacob Henry, and Joshua A. as well as grand-daughter, Lillian, all had crippling arthritis. Grand-daughter, Bessie had
arthritis listed on her death certificate, but it was not the main contributory ailment.

           (2) Edie Shuey born in Sycamore, Illinois, date difficult to read maybe 1878 or 1828 (probably 1878, because
ancestor, Henry Shuey, was a child in 1828)

 WIFE - Sidney Ann Carr
Note: A biography of William Shuey, son of Henry Shuey, from the book "The Past and Present of DeKalb County,
Illinois", states that his mother's name was Lucretia Carr. This biography was written by William's family after his death
and the first name, Lucretia, is incorrect. The marriage record of William's Father, Henry Shew/Shuey in Carroll
County, Maryland, lists Sidney Ann Carr as his wife. The death certificates of Elias Oliver Shewey and other siblings
of William, list their mother's name as Sidney Ann or variations of Sidney Ann.

William's Mother was named after her Mother, Sidney Ann Randall. The following is a quote from the Will of William's
Maternal Grandfather, Samuel Carr, "I give and bequeath unto my grand son, William Shew, son of my daughter
Sidney Ann Shew, wife of Henry Shew, the sum of one hundred dollars."

PAST AND PRESENT OF DEKALB COUNTY, ILLINOIS; By Prof. Lewis M. Gross; Chicago: The Pioneer Publishing
     Company 1907; Volume 1, Page 564
WILLIAM SHUEY--William Shuey, who departed this life on the 1st of January, 1902, was for many years an
enterprising agriculturist of DeKalb county, continuing actively in business up to the time of his demise. He was
respected wherever known and most of all where best known--a fact which indicated the many good qualities which he
     displayed.
A native of Carroll county, Maryland, Mr. Shuey was born in Warfieldsburg, October 26, 1848, a son of Henry
and Lucretia (Carr) Shuey. Reared and educated in Maryland, he came to Illinois in 1870, settling in DeKalb county
after working for a few months in Chicago. He then removed to the vicinity of Sycamore, taking up his abode on a farm,
and throughout the remainder of his business career his time and energies were devoted to general agricultural
pursuits, with the result that his close application and careful management brought him a gratifying measure of
prosperity. At the time of his death he owned two hundred and eighty-seven acres of valuable land.
In 1873 Mr. Shuey sought and won a companion for life's journey in his marriage to Miss Elizabeth Helson,
who was born about six miles from Sycamore on the line between Kane and DeKalb counties. She is a daughter of
John and Elizabeth (Jane) Helson, natives of England, of whom extended mention is made on another page of this
volume. In 1848 her parents came to this country and three years later took up their residence in DeKalb County,
where they continued to make their home until death. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Shuey was born a daughter, Minnie, who is
now the wife of Rev. E.S. Nicholas, a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church.
Politically Mr. Shuey was a democrat, but never desired office. He was a member of the United Brethren
church, while Mrs. Shuey holds membership with the Congregational church. He was a man of fine physique, strong

and robust up to his last days. He was honest and frugal, careful in expenditures and in the management of his
business interests and this enabled him to leave his family in comfortable financial circumstances. He was widely
known as a good neighbor and friend and a most devoted husband and father and he never hesitated to help a fellow
being, even at the cost of personal sacrifice. Mrs. Shuey resides at No. 113 High Street, Sycamore, where she
purchased a beautiful home. She also owns a farm near the city which she rents. She is a most estimable lady and
the circle of her friends is an extensive one.

Elias Shewey was divorced from his wife.

Notes from Circuit Clerk File # 8482 DeKalb County Circuit Clerk's Office, in the case of Shewey, Clara M. vs. Elias O.
        Shewey:

Marriage took place on 29 Sep 1873; Separation took place on 10 Aug 1877, Divorce decree final on 8 Nov 1877.
Oliver got custody of their son and Mary got custody of their daughter. Shortly before the divorce decree, a paper was
filed stating that on 24 Oct 1877, Oliver and his brother tried to forcibly remove the daughter, Anna, from Mary and her
brother and that Oliver had on one occasion said that he was going to take her out of state and return to Maryland.
Eventually, it was ordered that neither child was to be taken farther than Illinois or Iowa.

The census taker for 1860 U.S. Census has listed a son, George, listed as the 9th son of Henry and Sidney Ann Shew.
However, I find no other mention of a son, George, in any record. I believe this "George" is the son, Alexander, whose
birth year was very close to the birth year listed in the 1860 census. As outlined above, Alexander is found in several
        records.
                 __________________________________________________
Family tradition indicated that Alexander was on a trip to visit his family leaving from his home in Colorado to go to
Maryland when he died en route. He never made it to Maryland and is buried in Colorado.
