							BASEBALL
      HOW IS IT PLAYED?
• The field of play has 9 positions.
• When at bat, the players of a team use a
batting order to decide who bats when.
            1 – PITCHER
            2 – CATCHER
            3 – FIRST BASE
THE NINE 4 – SECOND BASE
DEFENSIVE 5 – THIRD BASE
            6 – SHORTSTOP
POSITIONS
            7 – LEFT FIELD
            8 – CENTER FIELD
            9 – RIGHT FIELD
  THE RULES OF BASEBALL
• Each game is played for 9 innings. An inning
ends when both teams bat and make 3 outs.
• The game is mainly a contest between the
pitcher and the batter. Nothing else happens
until the ball enters the field of play.
• The team that scores the most runs after 9
innings is the winner. If there is a tie, the
  game goes into extra innings.
      A common batting order…
                                   1 Center field Leadoff hitter
• The best hitter on a team is 2 Second base
the fourth batter, called the 3 Left Field
  cleanup hitter
                                   4 First base Cleanup hitter
• The pitcher is the last batter
                                   5 Right Field
  because he is the poorest
  hitter. 6 Shortstop
                                   7 Third Base
• The higher a player is in a
batting order, the more times 8 Catcher 8-hole hitter
he is going to bat. 9 Pitcher
• During a game a pinch hitter THE AMERICAN LEAGUE DOES MAKE
can be used to replace the THE PITCHER BAT. INSTEAD, A
pitcher and other batters. DESIGNATED HITTER TAKES HIS
                                   PLACE.
     PITCHER vs. BATTER
• This is the most important part of the game. Everything
else that happens is based on this moment…
• The outcome of an at-bat depends on the count:
   – 3 Strikes: OUT: the batter is out
   – 4 Balls: WALK: the batter goes to first base

If there are more strikes than balls, the
batter is "behind" in the count and the
pitcher is "ahead." Ex: 1 ball, 2
  strikes

If there are more balls than strikes, the
batter is "in front." Ex: 2 balls, 1
  strike

"Even Count": 1 ball, 1 strike OR 2 balls,
  2 strikes.
          GAME SITUATIONS
• IN ORDER TO NOT RECORD AN OUT, A BATTER MUST DO ONE
  OF THE FOLLOWING:
   – Get a base hit (single, double, triple, home run)
   – Draw a walk (GO TO FIRST BASE)
   – Get hit by a pitch (GO TO FIRST BASE)
   – Reach on an error (GO TO FIRST BASE)
• WHEN A PLAYER IS A BASERUNNER, HE CAN DO SEVERAL
  THINGS:
   – Advance or score a run on a base hit
   – Steal a base
   – Tag up on a fly out
   – Take part in a hit-and-run
• WHEN ON THE FIELD, EACH PLAYER CAN DO MANY THINGS TO
  STOP A RUN FROM SCORING:
   – Make an out by catching a ball in the air
   – Make a double play
   – Throw out a baserunner that is trying to score a run
      MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
• There are 30 teams divided into two
  leagues, National and American.

• Every team plays 162 games a season.

• No team can be relegated due to poor play.

• The minor leagues exist to develop players
before they can play in the "big leagues"

• Every October, since 1903, the champions
of each league play in the overall baseball
  championship, called the World Series.
