                                             The earth receives incoming
solar radiation from the sun during
the day and warms up. At night, it
                                        loses heat through emission of
                                        radiation to space. However, the
                                        greenhouse gases (such as carbon
                                        dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide)
in the atmosphere absorb some of
                                        the outgoing radiation and
re-radiate it back to the earth’s
surface again. Heat is thus retained
                                        in the atmosphere like a

                                             ‘Natural’ greenhouse effect is
important. If there is no ‘natural’
                                        greenhouse effect, the average
                                        surface temperature of the earth
will be -18°C instead of 15°C today.

Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the natural
balance of the earth’s energy budget has been influenced by human
activities. Large amount of greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide,
are released from factories, power stations and motor vehicles. With
increasing use of fossil fuels, more greenhouse gases concentrated in the
atmosphere. Besides, deforestation and the burning of tropical rain
forest also release huge amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
All these alter the chemical composition of the atmosphere and result in
the building up of greenhouse gases and contribute to the ‘enhanced’
greenhouse effect, leading to increasing world temperature.

It is estimated that atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide
had increased by 15% in the past 100 years. Along with this, world
temperatures had increased by about 0.5°C over the last century. By
the end of this century, a temperature increase of about 1.5 to 4.5°C is
   estimated.

With higher temperatures, ocean is warmer which causes
thermal expansion of water and finally rises in sea level.
Besides, glaciers and ice caps, especially those in polar
areas, melt quicker and cause a rise in sea level. In the 20 th
century, about 15 cm rise in sea level was estimated. More
frequent flooding may be found in low-lying areas.
