The liver is the largest and most complex organ in the body and serves numerous
vital functions. It stores and releases energy and minerals, makes bile and controls fat
absorption. It also makes proteins, vitamins and hormones, regulates blood clotting,
filters blood and breaks down waste products.
Among its many functions, the most important role of the liver is that of
detoxification. Toxins are defined as any compound that has a detrimental effect on cell
function or structure. The most common toxins are heavy metals, chemical toxins,
microbial compounds, and breakdown products of protein metabolism. The liver
detoxifies harmful substances by a complex series of chemical reactions. The role of
these various enzyme activities in the liver is to convert fat-soluble toxins into water-
soluble substances that can be excreted in the urine or the bile.
Every day our bodies are bombarded with toxins from both outside (the polluted
environment, medications, alcohol, cigarette smoke, car exhaust emissions) and toxins
from within the body (the by-products of nutrient breakdown, hormones and bacterial
waste products from the intestines). It is the role of the liver to change these potentially
harmful products into less harmful compounds that can be flushed from the body.
However, toxins that the body is unable to eliminate build up in the tissues, typically in
fat and bone.
The effects of exposure to toxins varies from individual to individual. Some
people are highly sensitive to different toxins. Others, because their bodies are more
resilient and their livers can detoxify more efficiently, are not so sensitive.
The Impaired Liver
Impaired liver function can result from intrahepatic problems caused by exposure
to food additives, solvents (cleaning materials, formaldehyde, toluene, benzene, etc.),
pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, and
aluminum), and other toxins. Other causes include viral infections of the liver, some
inherited disorders such as Gilbert's syndrome, alcohol-induced fatty deposits, the use of
anabolic steroids/estrogens/oral contraceptives and hyperthyroidism. Bile flow can be
restricted also by extrahepatic means such as gallstones, pregnancy, or other physical
causes such as tumors.
Once the detoxification system becomes overloaded, toxic metabolites
accumulate, and sensitivity to other chemicals, some of which are not normally toxic,
becomes progressively greater. This accumulation of toxins can wreak havoc on normal
People with a sluggish liver may complain of depression, general malaise,
headaches, digestive disturbances, allergies and chemical sensitivities, premenstrual
syndrome, and constipation. Not surprisingly, these are the same types of symptoms
people exposed to toxic chemicals often complain of. Many toxic chemicals (especially
solvents) and heavy metals have an affinity for nervous tissue, giving rise to a variety of
psychological and neurological symptoms such as depression, headaches, mental
confusion, mental illness, tingling in extremities, abnormal nerve reflexes, and other
signs of impaired nervous system function.
Liver Detoxification Pathways
The body eliminates toxins either by directly neutralizing them or by excreting
them in the urine or feces (and to a lesser degree from the mucous membranes, lungs and
skin). The liver, intestines, kidneys, and skin are the primary organs of detoxification.
The liver neutralizes toxins by a variety of ways: it filters the blood to remove
large toxins, synthesizes and secretes bile which binds to fat-soluble toxins and
enzymatically disassembles unwanted chemicals. This enzymatic process usually occurs
in two steps referred to as phase I and phase II. Phase I either directly neutralizes a toxin
or modifies the toxic chemical to form activated intermediates which are then neutralized
by phase II enzymes and excreted via the bile, urine or stool.
Phase I detoxification rates that are in excess of phase II activity will also cause
toxicity problems due to excessive accumulation of activated intermediates which in turn
can lead to tissue damage and disease. These people are referred to as ‘pathological
detoxifiers’. Pathological detoxifiers can be identified as those individuals who are
highly sensitive to fumes e.g. paints and perfumes, react adversely to various
pharmaceutical drugs and may have a reaction to drinking caffeine.
An imbalance between phase I and phase II can also occur when a person is
exposed to large amounts of toxins or exposed to toxins for a long period of time. In
these situations, the critical nutrients needed for phase II detoxification are depleted,
which allows the highly toxic activated intermediates to build up.
Although there are more sensitive tests to determine the functional activity of the
liver, such as a serum bile acid assay and various clearance tests, clinical judgment based
on medical history remains the major diagnostic tool for the sluggish liver. The presence
of chronic fatigue is a frequent symptom. Clearance tests using saliva, urine, and/or blood
after chemical challenge by caffeine, aspirin, and acetaminophen can be useful in
detecting Phase I and II imbalances.
The rate at which the liver can eliminate toxins can determine an individual’s
susceptibility to toxic overload, which in turn can lead to symptoms of ill health. When
the liver becomes so overloaded with harmful toxins that the enzymes that break them
down can no longer cope, the toxins build up and this then manifests itself in a specific
disease state which, without the intervention of correct nutrition, can become a vicious
circle of chronic toxic overload. This can be explained by the diagram below which
vividly shows how toxic overload can manifest in chronic health problems. Many
inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis, cardiovascular problems, headaches, chronic
fatigue and premature ageing can all be related to a build up of toxins that the liver is
unable to cope with, as shown in the above diagram.
One of the primary routes for the elimination of modified toxins is through the
bile. The body produces 1 to 1½ quarts of bile a day. However, when the excretion of
bile is inhibited (cholestasis), toxins stay in the liver longer. Cholestasis has several
causes, one of the most common being the presence of gallstones. Other causes include
alcohol ingestion, pregnancy, synthetic hormones, and certain drugs.
Antioxidants are chemicals that reduce oxidative damage to cells and
biomolecules. While oxygen is required for energy production by the mitochondria, a
by-product is the formation of oxygen free radicals. These molecules are unstable and
highly reactive and have the potential to damage cellular components such as cell
membranes, DNA, enzymes, and other proteins. The mitochondria are particularly
susceptible to oxygen free-radical damage which can permanently destroy it’s DNA.
Aerobic organisms have a remarkable system of innate antioxidants and enzymes
that defend the body against oxidative damage and cellular toxicity. These antioxidant
components work independently, cooperatively, and even synergistically to maintain the
integrity of organ tissues.
Though there are elaborate buffering systems in place, these protective processes
can be overwhelmed adding an additional burden to the detoxification system. Thus, it is
important to include natural antioxidants in the diet such as CoQ10, lipoic acid, N-
acetylcarnitin, N-acetylcysteine, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Flaonoids, and omega-3 fatty
Without this antioxidant defense system in place, people are very susceptible to
A series of special blood tests can often determine whether or not the liver is
functioning properly. These tests can also distinguish between acute and chronic liver
disorders and between hepatitis and cholestasis. However, normal blood tests do not
guarantee that the liver is functioning normally. The most commonly performed blood
Serum Bilirubin Test. Elevated levels of bilirubin often indicate an obstruction
of bile flow or a defect in the processing of bile by the liver. Bilirubin is produced
by the liver and is excreted in the bile.
Serum Albumin Test. Below-normal levels of albumin, a protein made by the
liver, are associated with many chronic liver disorders.
Serum Alkaline Phosphatase Test. Elevated levels of alkaline phosphatase, an
enzyme found in the bile, usually indicate an obstruction of bile flow, liver injury,
or certain cancers.
Serum Aminotransferases (transaminases). This enzyme is released from
damaged liver cells.
Prothrombin Time (PTT) Test. This test measures the time it takes for blood to
clot. Blood clotting requires vitamin K and a protein made by the liver. Liver cell
damage and bile flow obstruction can both interfere with proper blood clotting.
Alanine Transaminase (ALT) Test. This enzyme is released from damaged liver
Aspartate Transaminase (AST) Test. This enzyme is released from damaged
liver, heart, muscle, or brain cells.
Gamma-glutamyl Transpeptidase Test. This enzyme is produced by the liver,
pancreas, and kidneys and released into the blood when these organs are injured.
Lactic Dehydrogenase Test. This enzyme is released when organs such as the
liver, heart, lung, or brain are injured.
5-Nucleotidase Test. This enzyme is released by the liver when the liver is
injured due to bile duct obstruction or impaired bile flow.
Alpha-fetoprotein Test. This protein is produced by the fetal liver and testes,
indicating hepatitis or cancer.
Mitochondrial Antibodies Test. The presence of these antibodies can indicate
primary biliary cirrhosis, chronic active hepatitis, and certain other autoimmune
Approaches to Detoxification
Many people choose to follow a detoxification program, which may take many
forms. However, it should be noted that any such program should be supervised by a
qualified healthcare provider because when toxins are released too quickly this can be
dangerous and may cause headaches, fatigue, diarrhea, irritability and lightheadedness.
However, removal of toxins gives many positive health benefits, giving increased energy,
clear skin, vitality and a general feeling of well-being.
If a patient is very ill with severe toxic symptoms, hepatic detoxification must be
done very slowly and gradually. It is always preferable first to reduce toxin exposure and
any liver inflammation. Also, leaky gut syndrome should be addressed and repaired prior
to liver detoxification.
There is now an extensive body of evidence indicating that diet plays a crucial
role in modifying the body’s detoxification pathways. While diet is the source of amino
acids, fiber, nutrients, and phytonutrients critical for supporting phase I and II
detoxification systems, it is also the source of many environmental toxins. The major
source of food toxins include the petrochemical residues in our food and water from
certain farming practices, mercury from industrial waste, lead in our water supply and
toxic chemicals used for food preparation.
A diet that supports detoxification is naturally low in toxins. Drink plenty of
filtered water or diluted juice, at least two quarts per day. A minimum of one daily
serving of cruciferous vegetables and at least five servings of fresh fruit should be
included in the daily diet. Protein sources can be obtained from lentils, soy, beans, nuts,
seeds and low-mercury fish and organic chicken.
Eat organic foods whenever possible.
Drink filtered water.
Rotate foods, especially common allergens, such as milk products, eggs,
wheat, and yeast foods.
Practice food combining.
Eat a natural, seasonal cuisine.
Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, and, for
omnivarians, some low-fat dairy products, and fresh fish (not shellfish) and
Cook in iron, stainless steel, glass, or porcelain.
Avoid or minimize red meats, cured meats, organ meats, refined foods,
canned foods, sugar, salt, saturated fats, coffee, alcohol, and nicotine.
Another aspect of the nontoxic diet is avoiding drugs--over-the-counter,
prescription, and recreational types. Other natural therapies, such as acupuncture,
massage, and chiropractic may help in treating some problems so that we will not need
drugs for them. Avoiding or minimizing exposure to chemicals at home and work is also
important. This lessens our total toxic load. Substituting natural cleansers, cosmetics, and
clothes is helpful.
Nutrients & Supplements
Nutrients which are required by Phase I detoxification include copper, zinc,
magnesium, and Vitamin C.
There are also many substances that can activate Phase I detoxification.
Obviously, it is beneficial to improve phase I detoxification in order to eliminate toxins
as soon as possible. However, stimulation of phase I is contraindicated if a person’s
phase II systems are underactive. Foods that activate phase I include cruciferous
vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts), high-protein diet, oranges and
tangerines (but not grapefruits). Caraway and dill seeds are herbs that activate phase I
In order to work, phase II enzyme systems need nutrients both for their activation
and to provide the small molecules they add to the toxins. In addition, they utilize
metabolic energy to function and to synthesize some of the small conjugating molecules.
Thus, mitochondrial dysfunction, a magnesium deficiency or physical inactivity can
cause phase II detoxification to slow down, allowing the build-up of toxic intermediates.
Nutrients which encourage or activate Phase II include: glutathione, Vitamin B6,
Glycine, SAMe, Cysteine, methionine, molybdenum, acetyl-CoA, and glucuronic acid.
Activators of phase II detoxification enzymes include cruciferous vegetables,
citrus peel, dill weed, caraway seeds, glycine, lipotropic nutrients (choline, methionine,
betaine, folic acid and Vitamin B12), cysteine, taurine and fish oils.
Fasting & Detoxification Diets
Although detox is primarily thought of as a treatment for alcohol or drug
dependence, the term is also used to refer to diets, herbs, and other methods of removing
environmental and dietary toxins from the body for general health. In general, people
often report improved energy, clearer skin, regular bowel movements, improved
digestion, and increased concentration and clarity. Improvement can also be assessed by
measuring markers of disease and laboratory tests.
There are many different types of detox diets. Generally, a detox diet is a short-
term diet (3-21 days) that:
minimizes the amount of chemicals ingested (e.g. by choosing organic food)
emphasizes foods that provide the vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants that
the body needs for detoxification
contains foods that draw out and eliminate toxins by increasing the frequency
of bowel movements and urination such as high fiber foods and water
A detox diet shouldn't be used by pregnant or nursing women or children. People
with anemia, eating disorders, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease,
lowered immunity, uncorrected hypothyroidism, low blood pressure, ulcers, epilepsy,
cancer, ulcerative colitis, underweight, or addictions to drugs or alcohol should not try a
detox diet unless recommended and supervised by a primary care provider.
Critics of detoxification diets say that:
Detox diets are not needed. The body can detoxify on its own without the aid of a
detox diet. Our system has evolved to adequately eliminate new chemicals in our
environment without extra assistance.
There is no evidence that detox diets work.
Herbal detox products are unproven and expensive. In rare cases, they can even
Fasting is defined as “abstinence from all food and drink except water for a
specific period of time”. Fasting is often used as a detoxification method as it is one of
the quickest ways to increase elimination of wastes and enhance the healing processes of
the body. Fasting has been practiced throughout history and is universally employed in
the animal kingdom. Research has found it to be useful in the treatment of diabetese,
epilepsy, obesity, mental illneses, arthritis, heart disease, skin disease, and toxic
There are some risks with fasting. Fasting has been shown to mobilize toxic
chemicals from fat which may reach toxic levels in the blood. Another challenge with
fasting is the depletion of liver glutathione, which occurs after approximately 24 hours
and which leads to impairment of phase I detoxification. As a result of these
observations, other types of fasting, which are safer, although slower, have been
developed. In spite of these reservations, fasting for 3-5 days may be helpful in selected
Juice fasting is a type of detox method. It involves the short-term intake of raw
vegetable and fruit juices only. Proponents of juice fasting use juices because they are
rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Juice fasts typically last for one to three days. Longer
fasts require medical supervision as well as a thorough assessment to ensure that nutrient
deficiencies do not result. Between 32 and 64 ounces of juice is usually recommended to
be sipped throughout the day. Typical fruits and vegetables include celery, carrot, kale,
cabbage, apple, pineapple, cranberry, spinach, beet, and greens. Citrus fruits are often
avoided. Organic fruits and vegetables are usually recommended.
Juice fasting is considered an extreme form of detoxification. More gentle detox
methods are less restrictive and include a variety of foods, such as the detox diet.
Raw food diet. The raw food diet is based on unprocessed and uncooked plant
foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, sprouts, seeds, nuts, grains, beans, nuts, dried
fruit, and seaweed. Heating food above 116 degrees F is believed to destroy enzymes in
food that can assist in the digestion and absorption of food. Cooking is also thought to
diminish the nutritional value and "life force" of food.
Certain nutritional deficiencies can occur on the raw food diet, including calcium,
iron, Vitamin B12, protein and calories. Critics of the raw food diet say while it’s true
that some enzymes are inactivated when food is heated, it doesn’t matter because the
body uses its own enzymes for digestion. In addition, cooking makes certain
phytochemicals easier to absorb, such as beta-carotene in carrots.
Milk thistle has been known in Europe and other Mediterranean
countries since ancient times. Milk thistle has been under
scientific and clinical investigation since turn of the last century,
mainly in Germany. In the 1960s, German scientists identified a
group of active ingredients from milk thistle, mainly from the
seeds, and named them collectively as "silymarin". The
preparation of milk thistle fruits and seeds were approved by
German Commission E as a highly safe and effective herb for
Silymarin is known to protect the liver by altering and
strengthening the structure of outer cell membranes of
hepatocytes (liver cells), preventing toxins from entering the
liver cells, and by stimulating the regenerative ability of the liver and the formation of
new hepatocytes. Silymarin, as an anti-oxidant, may also reduce damage to liver cells
caused by chronic use of certain prescription drugs. The recommended dose of Silymarin
is 200-400mg per day.
Heavy Metal Chelation
Saunas have been used for centuries for detoxification therapy based on the
concept that as the body sweats, toxins are released through the skin. There is research
that shows that prolonged saunas, over an hour at a lower temperature, are thought to
increase the excretion of fat-soluble toxins and heavy metals. Saunas for detoxification
should be used under a health care provider’s supervision since this procedure can
deplete essential trace minerals and may be harmful to pregnant women, young children,
those with heart disease, those with seizures, and after drinking alcohol.
A low-temperature or infra red sauna at a temperature between 150-170 degrees
Fahrenheit is ideal. Drink 1 quart of warm water before entering the sauna and take
water to drink during the sauna. Begin by staying in the sauna for 15 minutes, then come
out and take a cold water shower. As you become more acclimated to the heat, increase
your time a little each day until you reach 2 hours. The cold rinse is important because it
stimulates the circulation and removes waste material that is excreted through the skin.
Hydrotherapy-Castor oil packs
Colon therapy is the process of cleansing and flushing out the colon, or large
intestine. Also called colonic irrigation or colonic hydrotherapy, the treatment is similar
to an enema but more extensive. Whereas an enema (which you can do yourself) bathes
only the lower portion of the colon, colonic irrigation (which must be done by a trained
practitioner) attempts to clean the entire--roughly five-foot--length.
Those who espouse colon therapy say that the health of the colon can affect the
health of the entire body. This theory holds little credence with the majority of
conventional physicians, however. They believe there is no reason whatsoever to irrigate
the colon, except in some cases of constipation and before certain surgical procedures,
such as a colonoscopy. They also contend that the best way to care for the colon is to let
its own natural physiological actions keep it in good working order.
As part of the digestive tract, the colon aids in digestion and the elimination of
waste products. When the colon is packed with accumulated, hardened feces due to a
poor diet, constipation, or some other gastrointestinal problem, waste can build up.
According to proponents of colon therapy, this buildup can result in stagnation and decay
of the fecal material in the colon. This decay, in turn, produces a whole host of bacteria
and other "toxins" that can be absorbed into the bloodstream, resulting in myriad
illnesses--from a simple cold to life-threatening coronary artery disease. Colon therapists
suggest that the typical American diet, which is low in fiber and high in red meat and
other fatty foods, is a major contributor to this problem.
Contemporary mainstream physicians typically take a different view, pointing out
that food and waste products cannot "toxify" the body by remaining in the colon. In
addition, they disapprove of colon therapy because they say it can interfere with the
natural balance of helpful bacteria that keep the intestines functioning normally. Most
conventional doctors do agree, however, that avoiding red meat and other fatty foods,
and eating a healthy, high-fiber diet, is the best way to keep the colon healthy.
During colonic irrigation, you will lie on your side or back. The therapist will
insert a soft, disposable plastic tube into your rectum, which will remain in place during
the entire session. First, the therapist gently pumps a measured amount of body-
temperature, filtered water into your colon; this may contain herbs, enzymes, or other
"purifying" substances. Then, the therapist may gently massage your abdomen to help
release the impacted fecal material from the intestinal walls. Finally, the pump is
reversed, and the water is gently vacuumed back through the same tube and into a closed
waste system. There is no mess or foul odor.
The process is repeated many times during the session, which lasts about an hour.
Approximately 20 gallons of water will be used, but unlike an enema, the therapy does
not require any "race to the toilet" afterward, since most of the water is removed by the
end of the session.
Some people report feeling lighter and more energized after colonic irrigation.
Others may experience nausea, headache, or flulike symptoms. These symptoms
generally pass within a few hours. Many colon therapists recommend the oral intake of a
restorative electrolyte solution following a colon therapy session.
The number of suggested treatments depends on your reason for seeking out colon
therapy. For general health maintenance, once a year is usually enough. However, if you
have a chronic condition (such as regular constipation, chronic fatigue, or persistent
digestive complaints), you may need several treatments within a few weeks.
There are no scientific studies to support any therapeutic claims for colon therapy.
On an individual basis, people do report that colon treatments relieve the distention and
bloating associated with constipation and help restore regular bowel movements.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that colon therapy may be useful for a number of ailments
including indigestion, gas, headaches, joint problems, allergies, asthma, skin problems,
and even toxicity from drugs, alcohol, and smoking.
Colon therapy should only be performed by a therapist certified by the
International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy (I-ACT) in San Antonio, Texas. You
can consult this organization to find a certified therapist in your area. Only the state of
Florida requires colon therapists to be registered.
If you have any questions about how colon therapy may affect your health,
discuss them with your doctor first.
Colon therapy is not recommended if you have blood in your stool, severe
hemorrhoids, Crohn's disease, congestive heart failure, severe anemia,
abdominal hernia, heart disease, high blood pressure, amoebic dysentery,
gastrointestinal cancer, tumors of the large intestine or rectum, ulcerative
colitis, diverticulitis, or recent colon surgery (less than three months).
If you are in the first or third trimester of pregnancy, colon therapy is
not recommended because it may induce labor.
Make sure the clinic you choose is clean and that the therapist is reputable
and well-trained. Infection can occur if equipment is not properly
sterilized or disposable.
Colon therapy is not known to react with any drugs or medications.
Among the possible but remote complications of colon therapy are
perforation of the intestinal wall, disturbance in the body's fluid balance,
and heart failure caused by excess water in the blood.
The use of coffee in enemas for liver detoxification purposes is well known and is
a practice which has been recommended by holistic and alternative medicine
professionals for many years. The coffee enema is used to detoxify the liver, not the
colon. It is a low-volume enema that remains only in the sigmoid colon and rectum, the
lower part of the large intestine. When a coffee enema is used, the caffeine from the
coffee is preferentially absorbed into the liver where it becomes a very strong detoxifying
agent. The coffee does not go into the systemic circulation, unless the enema procedure is
You will need the following materials:
1. An enema bag or bucket, preferably one of clear plastic that you can see
2. A large stainless steel cooking pot.
3. Organic coffee or Folgers (red can) fully caffeinated, drip grind coffee.
4. A source of uncontaminated water. Chlorinated water should be boiled for
Put a little over 1 quart of clean water in a pan and bring it to a boil. Add 2 level
tablespoons of coffee (or the coffee amount that has been prescribed for you). Let it
continue to boil for five minutes, then turn the stove off.
Allow it to cool down to a very comfortable, tepid temperature. Test with your finger. It
is safer to have it too cold than too warm. CAUTION: never use it any hotter than what
your immersed finger can easily tolerate.
Next, carry your pan or pot and lay an old towel on the floor (or your bed if you are
careful and know you won't spill. For safety, a piece of plastic can be placed under the
towel). If you don't use an old towel, you will soon have one since coffee stains
permanently! Use another bunch of towels, if you want, as a pillow and bring along some
appropriately relaxing literature. Pour the coffee from the pan into the enema bucket
without getting the coffee grounds in the cup. You may prefer to use an intermediate
container with a pour spout when going from the pan to the enema bucket. Do not use a
paper filter to strain the grounds. Put your enema bag in the sink with the catheter
Pour the coffee into the enema bag. Loosen the clamp to allow the coffee to run out to the
end of the catheter tip and reclamp the bag when all the air has been removed from the
enema tubing. Use a coat hanger to hang the enema bag at least two feet above the floor;
on a door knob or towel rack. The bucket can rest on a chair, shelf or be held. Do not
hang it high, as on a shower head, because it will be too forceful and the hose won't
reach. It should flow very gently into the rectum and distal sigmoid colon only; this is
not a high enema or colonic. Allowing it to go well up into the colon may introduce
caffeine into the general circulation as though you had taken it by mouth.
Lie down on the floor on your back or right side and gently insert the catheter. If you
need lubrication, food grade vegetable oil such as olive oil, a vitamin E capsule, or KY
jelly should be fine, unless you are chemically sensitive. It is generally a good idea to
avoid petroleum products. Gently insert the tube into the rectum a few inches and then
release the clamp and let the first 1/2 of the quart (1/2 liter; 2 cups) of coffee flow in.
Clamp the tubing off as soon as there is the slightest amount of discomfort or fullness. Do
not change position or use an incline board to cause the enema to enter further into the
colon; this defeats the purpose of this type of enema.
Try to retain the enema for a minimum of 12 or more minutes. Sometimes there will be
an immediate urgency to get rid of it and that is fine. It helps to clean the stool out of the
colon so that next time around you can hold more of the enema longer. Never force
yourself to retain it if you feel that you can't. When you have clamped the tubing, remove
the catheter tip and void when you have to. It is best to hold it for at least 12 minutes each
time. After you have emptied the bowel, proceed with the remaining 1/2 quart and
likewise hold that for at least 12 minutes, if able, then void.
The goal is to have two enemas, not exceeding 1/2 a quart (1/2 liter, 2 cups) each, that
you are able to hold for 12 to 15 minutes each. Usually 2 or 3 times will use up all of the
enema, but that is not your goal; being able to hold it in for 12 to 15 minutes is. When
you have finished your session, rinse out the bag and hang it up to dry. Periodically run
boiling water, peroxide, or other comparable antimicrobial agent through the empty bag
to discourage mold growth when not in use.
If you feel wired or hyper, or have palpitations or irregular heartbeats after a coffee
enema, you should reduce the amount of coffee, usually by half for a few days or weeks,
or consider that you really need organic coffee. Be sure that the water used is clean and
free of chemicals.
Sometimes you will hear or feel a squirting out and emptying of the gallbladder. This
occurs under the right rib cage, or sometimes more closely to the mid line. If after a week
of daily enemas you have never felt or heard the gall bladder release, you should consider
making the coffee stronger, going up in 1/2 tablespoon increments per quart, not
exceeding 2 tablespoons per cup. Alternatively, you may need a slightly larger volume,
such as 3 cups at a time. Sometimes, 3 enemas (2 cups or less each) rather than two at a
session are more beneficial for some.
Always discontinue the enemas if there is any adverse reaction whatsoever, and discuss it
with the doctor at your next appointment. If you find the enema helpful, do not use it
more than once per day for any extended period without medical supervision. Use it as
necessary, perhaps several days in a row, but more commonly a few times per week.
Here we describe a 6-day Liver/Gallbladder Flush.
Items required: raw, unfiltered apple juice, Epsom salts, grapefruit juice, olive oil, and the
From Monday to Saturday noon drink pure, unfiltered apple juice - as much as you can
consume, with meals and between them. It should be at room temperature or heated, but
not cold. (You can skip this part and still achieve good results)
On Saturday (or any day where the following day is free), have lunch as you normally
Three hours after lunch (no food after lunch), dissolve 2 tablespoons of Epsom salts in
three-quarters of a cup of water and drink. Follow this with a chaser of grapefruit juice to
mask the taste, if desired. A different cathartic such as Citroma (magnesium citrate) can
be used, but Epsom salts may be best because it helps relax bile ducts and valves.
For dinner, have half a grapefruit only.
At bedtime, take 1 cup of unrefined olive oil mixed (shaken, not stirred) with up to one
cup of grapefruit juice (or a smaller quantity of lemon juice). This may be divided into 4
doses taken over an hour (ie. a quarter cup every 15 minutes), but the more rapidly you
can take it the better. Using a straw and plugging your nose are helpful.
Go immediately to bed. You may need assistance in going to sleep - try ornithine or
melatonin before bed.
Lie on your right side, bend your right knee to your chest and hold for approximately 30
minutes. You can then lower your knee and proceed to sleep.
If you feel a bit nauseous when waking up, rest a bit until you feel better. For nausea,
take tomato juice and sauerkraut juice mixed in equal parts, 1 tablespoon every 15
minutes. When you get up, take 2 tablespoons of Epsom salts in three-quarters of a cup of
water (or other cathartic), followed by grapefruit juice . This should be done 1-2 hours
After evacuation, the toilet bowl may contain many floating small green globs. Darker
green ones may be older deposits.
If you pass many tan/green globs, the procedure can be repeated in 2 weeks. If a
moderate number are seen, repeat in 60 days. If a few are seen, every six months is
sufficient. Several flushes may need to be accomplished before symptoms such as
allergies, bursitis and some back pain are resolved.

Do not use orange juice instead of Coke. It doesn’t work the same.
The coke has some action on the liver. Also, you have to remember to lie on

DO NOT TAKE OLIVE OIL MIXTURE IN THE MORNING! This
is an absolute NO! You must take the olive oil during the evening while the

"Cleansing the liver of gallstones dramatically improves digestion, which is the basis of your whole
health. You can expect your allergies to disappear, too, more with each cleanse you do! Incredibly, it
also eliminates shoulder, upper arm, and upper back pain. You have more energy and increased sense
of well being.
It is the job of the liver to make bile, 1 to 1.5 quarts in a day! The liver is full of tubes (biliary tubing)
that deliver the bile to one large tube (the common bile duct). The gallbladder is attached to the
common bile duct and acts as a storage reservoir. Eating fat or protein triggers the gallbladder to
squeeze itself empty after about twenty minutes, and the stored bile finishes its trip down the common
bile duct to the intestine.
For many persons, including children, the biliary tubing is choked with gallstones. Some develop
allergies or hives but some have no symptoms. When the gallbladder is scanned or X-rayed nothing is
seen. Typically, they are not in the gallbladder. Not only that, most are too small and not calcified, a
prerequisite for visibility on an X-ray. There are over half a dozen varieties of gallstones, most of
which have cholesterol crystals in them. They can be black, red, white, green or tan colored. The
green ones get their color from being coated with bile. Notice in the picture (pg. 545) how many have
imbedded unidentified objects. Are they fluke remains? Notice how man are shaped like corks with
longitudinal grooves below the tops. We can visualize the blocked bile ducts from such shapes. Other
stones are composites- made of many smaller ones- showing that they regrouped in the bile ducts
some time after the last cleanse.
At the very center of each stone is found a clump of bacteria, according to scientists, suggesting a
dead bit of parasite might have started the stone forming.
As the stones grow and become more numerous the back pressure on the liver causes it to make less
bile. Imagine the situation if your garden hose had marbles in it. Much less water would flow, which
in turn would decrease the ability of the hose to squirt out the marbles. With gallstones, much less
cholesterol leaves the body, and cholesterol levels rise.
Gallstones, being porous, can pick up all the bacteria, cysts, viruses and parasites that are passing
through the liver. In this way "nests" of infection are formed, forever supplying the body with fresh
bacteria. No stomach infection such as ulcers or intestinal bloating can be cured permanently without
removing these gallstones from the liver.
You can't clean a liver with living parasites in it. You won't get out many stones, and
will feel quite sick. Zap daily the week before, or get through the first three weeks of
the parasite killing program before attempting a liver cleanse. If you are on a
parasite maintenance program, do a high dose program the week before.
Completing the kidney cleanse before cleansing the liver is also recommended. You
want your kidneys, bladder and urinary tract in top working condition so they can
efficiently remove any undesirable substances incidentally absorbed from the
intestine as the bile is being excreted.
Do any dental work first, if possible. Your mouth should be metal free and bacteria
free (cavitations are cleaned). A toxic mouth can put a heavy load on the liver,
burdening it immediately after cleansing. Eliminate that problem first for best results.

It may become slimy.
It never happens with grapefruit juice!]
Choose a day like Saturday for the cleanse, since you will be able to rest the next day.
Take no medicines, vitamins or pills that you can do without; they could prevent success. Stop the
parasite program and kidney herbs too, the day before.
Eat a no-fat breakfast and lunch such as cooked cereal with fruit, fruit juice, bread and preserves or
honey (no butter or milk), baked potato or other vegetables with salt only. This allows the bile to build
up and develop pressure in the liver. Higher pressure pushes out more stones.
2:00 PM. Do not eat or drink after 2 o'clock. If you break this rule you could feel
quite ill later. Get your Epsom salts ready. Mix 4 tbs. in 3 cups water and pour this
into a jar. This makes four servings, 3/4 (three fourths) cup each. Set the jar in the
refrigerator to get ice cold (this is for convenience and taste only).
[ You can substitute 3 cups water with 3 cups freshly pressed grapefruit juice, or freshly pressed
apple juice, it tastes better .]
6:00 PM. Drink one serving 3/4 (three fourths cup) of the ice cold Epsom salts. If
you did not prepare this ahead of time, mix 1 tbs. in 3/4 (three fourth) cup water
now. You may add 1/8 (one eight) tsp. vitamin C powder to improve the taste. You
may also drink a few mouthfuls of water afterwards or rinse your mouth. Get the
olive oil (ozonated, if possible) and grapefruit out to warm up.
Alternative Schedule 1: Omit the first Epsom Slats dose at 6 p.m. Take only one
dose, waiting till 8 p.m. Change nothing else. Many people still get stones with one
less dose. If you do not, do the full course next time. "The Cure For HIV and AIDS"
By Hulda Clark pg.585
8:00 PM. Repeat by drinking another 3/4 (three fourths) cup of Epsom salts. You
haven't eaten since two o'clock, but you won't feel hungry. Get your bedtime chores
done. The timing is critical for success.
9:45 PM. Pour 1/2 (half) cup (measured) olive oil into the pint jar. Add 2 drops HCl
to sterilize. Wash grapefruit twice in hot water and dry; squeeze by hand into the
measuring cup. Remove pulp with fork. You should have at least 1/2 (half) cup,
more (up to 3/4 (three fourths) cup) is best. You may use part lemonade. Add this to
the olive oil. Also add Black Walnut Tincture. Close the jar tightly with the lid and
shake hard until watery (only fresh grapefruit juice does this).
Now visit the bathroom one or more time, even if it makes you late for your ten
o'clock drink. Don't be more than 15 minutes late. You will get fewer stones.
10:00 PM. Drink the potion you have mixed. Take 4 ornithine capsules with the first
sips to make sure you will sleep through the night. Take 8 if you already suffer from
insomnia. Drinking through a large plastic straw helps it go down easier. You may
use oil and vinegar salad dressing, or straight honey to chase it down between sips.
Have these ready in a tablespoon on the kitchen counter. Take it all to your bedside if
you want, but drink it standing up. Get it down within 5 minutes (fifteen minutes for
very elderly or weak persons).
Lie down immediately. You might fail to get stones out if you don't. The sooner you
lie down the more stones you will get out. Be ready for bed ahead of time. Don't
clean up the kitchen. As soon as the drink is down walk to your bed and lie down flat
on your back with your head up high on the pillow. Try to think about what is
happening in the liver. Try to keep perfectly still for at least 20 minutes. You may
feel a train of stones traveling along the bile ducts like marbles. There is no pain
because the bile duct valves are open (thank you Epsom salts!). Go to sleep, you may
fail to get stones out if you don't.
Next morning. Upon awakening take your third dose of Epsom salts. If you have
indigestion or nausea wait until it is gone before drinking the Epsom salts. You may
go back to bed. Don't take this potion before 6:00 am.
2 Hours Later. Take your fourth (the last) dose of Epsom salts. You may go back to

Alternative Schedule 2: After taking the first dose of Epsom salts in the morning,
wait two hours and take a second dose of the oil mixture (but only 1/2 cup)and go
back to bed. After two more hours take another dose of Epsom salts. This schedule
can increase the number of stones you remove."
After 2 More Hours you may eat. Start with fruit juice. Half an hour later eat fruit.
One hour later you may eat regular food but keep it light. By supper you should feel

Use a flashlight to look for gallstones in the toilet with the bowel movement.
Use colander to make sure you collect all stones
Look for the green kind since this is proof that they are genuine gallstones, not food residue. Only

Calcified stones and stones containing protein may sink, but colander will catch all stones.
Count them all roughly, whether tan or green. You will need to total 2,000 stones before the liver is
clean enough to rid you of allergies or bursitis or upper back pains permanently. The first cleanse may
rid you of them for a few days, but as the stones from the rear travel forward, they give you the same
symptoms again. You may repeat cleanses at two week intervals. Never cleanse when you are ill.
[HPS editors note: I started passing chaff through normal bowel movements after my 4th colon
cleansing fast, approximately after a total of 4x14= 56 days of total colon cleansing within 9 months.
The chaff continued in normal bowel movements for 8 months! Thousands of tiny stones, looked like
small popcorn and small bee pollen granules, others looked like moth wings. Sometime I would drop
at one bowel movement 50-100 pea size stones that would float in the water. It was truly an
experience. Almost daily for 8 months! When I did my first Dr. Clark's liver cleanse I immediately
dropped over 200 pea size green and tan stones, and when I examined them I was shocked. They
crushed in my fingers and what I found was pure fat, pure cholesterol. Can you imagine hundred of
them. Also in my second liver cleanse I had the same experience].
Sometimes, the bile ducts are full of cholesterol crystals that did not form into round stones. They
appear as a "chaff" floating on top of the toilet bowl water. It may be tan colored, harboring millions
of tiny white crystals. cleansing this chaff is just as important as purging the stones.
How safe is the liver cleanse? It is very safe. My opinion is based on over 500 cases, including many
persons in their seventies and eighties. None went to the hospital; none even reported pain. However
it can make you feel quite ill for one or two days afterwards, although in every one of these cases the
maintenance parasite program had been neglected. This is why the instructions direct you to complete
the parasite and kidney rinse program first.
This procedure contradicts many modern medical viewpoints. Gallstones are thought to be formed in
the gallbladder, not the liver. They are though to be few, not thousands. They are not linked to pains
other than gallbladder attacks. It is easy to understand why this thought: by the time you have acute
pain attacks, some stones are in the gallbladder, are big enough and sufficiently calcified to see on X-
ray, and have caused inflammation there. When the gallbladder is removed the acute attacks are gone,
but the bursitis and other pains and digestive problems remain.
The truth is self-evident. People who have had their gallbladder removed surgically still get plenty of
green, bile coated stones, and anyone who cares to dissect their stones can see that the concentric
circles and crystals of cholesterol match textbook pictures of "gallstones" exactly."
Step 3: Gallbladder Flush
The following procedure is based on: "Natural Liver Therapy" by
Christopher Hobbs, L. Ac., Botanica Press, Capitola, CA (1993).
1. Eat only whole foods (un-refined foods) without fat for a whole
2. About an hour before bedtime (on an empty stomach), drink ¼-cup
of extra virgin cold pressed olive oil mixed with ¼-cup of freshly
squeezed lemon juice (from one lemon). Repeat this process every
15 minutes until a total of 1 cup each of olive oil and lemon juice
is finished. An alternative to this procedure is to replace lemon
juice with freshly-squeezed grapefruit juice. ¼ to ½ cup of
grapefruit juice can be used each time. A total of one to one and a
half cups of grapefruit juice is required. It works well and tastes
better than lemon juice.
3. Go to bed immediately and lie on your right side.
4. The next morning take 1 litre (approximately 4 cups) of warm
distilled or filtered water containing two level teaspoons of un-
iodized sea salt. Alternatively the addition of juice from half a
lemon may be used in place of the sea salt.
5. Eat only softly cooked vegetables and broth the second day. The
gallstones should come out some time during the second day.
The stones that come out are usually dark green or black in colour. They
may also be brown, off-white, green or, rarely, red in colour. Stones
crushed by Gold Coin Grass (GCG) may come out in any shape including flat
pieces or sand.
Step 3a: Liver Cleanse and Gallbladder Flush (Alternative Procedure)
An alternative procedure to Step 3 above combines gallbladder flush with
liver flush. It uses apple juice fasting, as described below (based on
"Herbally Yours", by Penny C. Royal, Sound Nutrition, Utah, 1982). I
would like to caution that people with cancer, candida yeast infection,
diabetes, hypoglycemia or stomach ulcer should not use this apple juice
fasting procedure because of the high sugar content in the apple juice.
Take 2 cups of 8 oz organic apple juice or apple cider every 2 hours from
8 am to 8 pm. Altogether 14 cups will have been taken during this
period. Do not take any other food or drinks except plain water.
Please note that the apple juice should not be taken cold from the
refrigerator. It should be kept at room temperature or mixed with about
10% hot water before use because cold drinks chill the liver. For people
with lots of stagnant bile, the collapsed stagnant bile may rush out after
drinking apple juice. It may feel like having diarrhea but is actually
stagnant bile (brownish yellow colour).
1. Repeat Day 1
2. At 8:30 pm, take ½-cup (4 oz) of olive oil (extra virgin cold
pressed) mixed with ½-cup of lemon juice (squeezed from 3
lemons) or with ¾-cup of freshly-squeezed grapefruit juice.
3. Go immediately to bed and sleep on your right side. If there is a
large amount of stones, nausea may be felt after drinking olive oil
but this feeling will largely disappear on the third day after taking
1. Upon rising in the morning, take 1 litre (approximately 4 cups) of
warm distilled or filtered water containing two level teaspoons of
un-iodized sea salt. Alternatively the addition of juice from half a
lemon may be used in place of the sea salt. Wait for at least half an
hour before eating.
2. Take vegetable broth and softly cooked vegetables only. The
stones should be passed in the stool any time between midnight of
Day 2 and morning of Day 4.
Note: The purpose of drinking apple juice is mainly for the malic acid in apple juice.
Malic acid is a good solvent for stagnant bile in the liver. Apple juice taken during fasting
would dissolve and push out stagnant bile in the liver. For someone with yeast infection,
apple juice can be replaced by malic acid in capsule or powder form. The fasting
procedure is the same except that apple juice is replaced by 1000 - 2000 mg of malic acid
taken with 2 cups of warm water.
Optional Extra Step
The following additional step is optional, and can be used with Step 3 or Step 3a. You
may want to try it yourself and see if it changes your results.
Some time ago, I was contacted by a customer who informed me that he had done 2
previous gallbladder flushes without success. He decided to try something new for his
third flush attempt, so he used the liver/gallbladder flush 4-pack of Chinese Bitters, GCG,
Curcuma, and Coptis according to instructions. Roughly one hour before taking his olive
oil and lemon juice, he noticed that he had some left in each bottle, so he took a dose of
all of them together on an empty stomach. In his words, the results were "fantastic".
This experience has since helped many others achieve a more efficient flush, including
myself. My understanding is that the combination of Chinese Bitters, GCG, Coptis, and
Curcuma all taken shortly before the olive oil and lemon juice helps the gallbladder
contract more efficiently, which helps push out old stones in the back of the gallbladder.
I did my first 4 flushes (roughly 1 to 1½ months apart) in 1990. In my fourth flush,
almost no more stones came out and I felt great, so I assumed that I had cleansed all of
the stones from my gallbladder. Since then, I have been doing maintenance flushes once
or twice a year, and in each flush, I usually release roughly 10 small stones. I had always
assumed that these were newly formed stones, but in my last flush, I tried this additional
step and took ½ tablespoon each of GCG and Curcuma, and 1 teaspoon each of Chinese
Bitters and Coptis. I was surprised to pass two of the largest stones that I have ever seen,
along with some small stones.
I believe that the large stones were very old, and had been there all these years when I
thought there were no large stones left. All of my previous flushes had failed to push
them out, but this time, taking this simple extra step, I was able to move them out.
Guide to using flushing procedures
When gallstones exist, the gallbladder cannot contract efficiently. Therefore only stones
in the front area of the gallbladder can be pushed out in the first flush. Then stones from
the back area would slowly move forward and may cause problems again. The whole
process should be repeated, including the use of GCG prior to the flush. It usually takes at
least 3-4 flushes to clean out all the stones. Basically the flush should be repeated until
hardly any stone comes out even though you have a good flush. The weaker your
gallbladder is in contraction, the more flushes you will need in order to push out all of
A good flush means that all the loose stones are out. You feel good for at least a few
days. The remaining stones are packed ones. They should be allowed some time to loosen
up and get ready to come out. The interval between good flushes should be 1-2 months.
Repeating the flush too soon after a good flush may waste your effort because the packed
stones are not ready to come out yet. However, you can repeat the flush any time if you
have an incomplete flush which means that loose stones are still somewhere and you
never felt comfortable after the flush.
Once stones have been formed, the gallbladder tends to be sluggish. New stones may be
formed again. Therefore 1 to 2 flushes a year is recommended for maintenance. Gold
Coin Grass (GCG) may not be needed any more because new stones should be small and
pass easily. I have been doing maintenance for years; usually around 10 to 15 small
stones come out each time I do it. Chinese Bitters is the only product that I take now for
maintenance, in addition to 1-2 flushes a year. I take these preventive measures because I
am naturally prone to liver congestion.
There are many versions of liver/gallbladder flushes floating around. Many of them are too harsh for people who
are ill. These involve consuming an entire cup of olive oil and using Epsom salts as an intestinal flush.
Consumption of this Epsom salt mixture usually results in watery diarrhea within a half hour. Sure, it will get the
intestines moving - but too much and too fast. Despite the seemingly dramatic results, this is actually a poor
intestinal cleanse. Diarrhea can deplete vital electrolytes, cause extreme fatigue and can be dangerous for those
on heart medications and other medications that depend on proper electrolye balance. It is never necessary to
induce diarrhea in order to cleanse the colon. Many of these flushes rely on the oil to cleanse the liver without
using herbs that protect the liver from the very toxic materials that can come out. The Liver Regeneration
Program allows people to increase the oil content of the flush gradually and can be safely used by those without
gallbladders. It contains herbs that specifically protect the liver as well as cleanse it and naturally strengthen its
Many diseases begin because the liver, whose job it is
to filter out toxins, becomes overburdened by the
overwhelming amount of pesticides, food additives,
yeast, and other unhealthy substances we put into it
that must be eliminated. Doing a liver cleanse once
every three months can be helpful in keeping this
problem under control.
Version One of The Liver Flush
The first one is a bit more structured and comes from
Polarity Therapy, the great body of work Dr.
Randolph Stone, D.O., N.D., D.C., O.M. developed in
the earlier part of the 20th century. First thing in the
morning: 2 Tbsp. cold pressed extra virgin olive oil or
almond oil, juice of one fresh squeezed organic
lemon, fresh squeezed juice of 1-2 organic oranges
(optional), 1-4 cloves of fresh organic garlic. (If garlic
is too strong, take garlic at lunch time in a salad.)
Blend all of the above together and drink.
Immediately after ingesting the oil, garlic, and juice
blend, drink 2 cups of hot herbal tea, or hot water if
tea is not available. Suggested herbal tea: boil ½
finger of fresh organic ginger root sliced into 6-7
pieces with a Tbsp. each of fenugreek, fennel, and flax
seed for 3 minutes at a slow boil, and pour this herbal
broth into a teapot with 1 Tbsp. comfrey and 1 Tbsp.
All of the above is The Liver Flush which should be
done for 10-14 days in a row. Drink all the herbal tea
you want in the morning – NO sweeteners for at least
two hours after the flush. Midmorning: If hungry,
drink fresh vegetable or fruit juice or eat a grapefruit.
Lunch: Fruit or vegetable salad and/or steamed or
baked vegetable. Sprouts are good. Midafternoon:
Fruit or sprout snack. A few raw almonds or walnuts.
Dinner: Same as lunch. After dinner: Only liquids –
no solid food. A mucus-free all vegan diet during the
14 days of The Liver Flush is advised – no meat, eggs,
dairy, coffee, alcohol, sugars, refined flours, white
rice, and starches like potatoes and corn.
Version Two of the Liver Flush
Is less involved: First thing in the morning: 6 Tbsp.
lemon juice, 3 Tbsp. olive oil, 1 small crushed clove
garlic, pinch of grated ginger and cayenne, whisk in
blender and drink immediately. Do NOT eat for at
least 1 hour. Do this for 10 days and repeat a few days
each month thereafter.
How to Do a Liver and Gallbladder Flush
This particular fast is based on European folk medicine and is still used in health
spas and hospitals to cleanse and revitalize two of your body's most essential
cleansing tools - the liver and the gall bladder. We recommend that you read
"How to Understand a Liver and Gall Bladder Flush" and consult your doctor
before beginning this fast.
1. Abstain from all solid foods for the first two days of the fast and drink organic
apple juice, warmed with cinnamon sticks in it. Also drink dandelion root and
dried dandelion leaf tea, made by simmering the two ingredients in water for
2. Drink both drinks, 2 hours apart, for a total of seven drinks each day.
3. Follow this general schedule with your drinks: 8 a.m.: ½ c. warm apple juice
with ½ c. dandelion tea, together; 10 a.m.: 2 c. plain apple juice with ½ c.
water; 12 noon: 1 c. tea and 1 c. apple juice, together; 2 p.m.: 2 c. juice, ½ c.
water, ½ c. fresh pressed beet juice; 4 p.m.: 2 c. apple juice, ½ c. water; 6
p.m.: 1 c. apple juice, 1 c. tea, together; 8 p.m.: 2 c. apple juice. Continue this
schedule for 2 to 4 days.
4. Take an internal bath on the last day of your fast, before you begin the final
step. This is optional, but recommended.
5. Begin to end your fast about 3 hours before you go to sleep by completing
the following procedure.
6. Soak a 12-inch square of cloth, cotton or wool flannel fabric is best, with
castor oil, and prepare either a heating pad or a hot water bottle.
7. Drink ¼ tsp. Epsom salt dissolved in 1/3 c. warm water to dilate your gall
bladder and liver ducts in preparation for the olive oil cocktail. You can chew
orange or lemon rind if the Epsom salt bothers you.
8. Drink a blended combination of 1/3 c. cold pressed olive oil, ¼ c. cream, 1/3
c. hot apple juice, and 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice.
9. Get into bed lying on your right side. Place the castor oil cloth, with the
heating pad over it (use old towels to avoid a mess), over your liver and gall
bladder area (on your right side, just under your rib cage). Leave it there for
1½ to 2 hours.
10. Remove the hot pack and castor oil cloth and drink the same Epsom salt
drink that you drank earlier.
11. Rest easy. Drink some fresh-squeezed orange or lemon juice. And by the
next day you should notice various sized pebbles in your eliminations,
ranging in color from bright green to dark brown - gall stones formed by
rancid fats in your diet.
12. Break your fast by avoiding fried foods, oils, & fats. Eat oranges, pineapple,
grapefruit, and berries in the morning, a leafy green for lunch, and fresh soup,
salad, and steamed vegetables for dinner. Continue this general type of diet
for a few days after your fast.
Avoid heavy exercise during the fast. Light yoga, walking or gardening are
excellent for stimulating your metabolism without straining your body.
It is normal to experience some discomfort and nausea. Oranges are good
for relieving this, however, be sure to chew it well and don't eat too much.
It's best to do a colonic enema on the last day as it is the best way to
completely elimate this waste. You may want to schedule a visit with a hydro-
therapist for this day.
For people over 40 years old who have not had excellent eating habits, it will
probably be necessary to repeat this fast each month for a few months to
break loose all their gallstones.
The liver is the main organ of detoxification. Although the focus of detox is on the liver,
every other system in the body is compromised if your liver is not functioning properly.
That’s because many of the toxins to which we are exposed are fat soluble, meaning
they cannot be directly excreted in the water-based urine, but instead are attracted to
fatty cell membranes in our bodies. This attraction allows them to be easily transported
inside of the cells where they can sequester and exert their toxic effects. These toxins
become permanent residents of our systems, challenging our entire body function,
including liver, kidney, heart, brain, colon, lungs, skin, and hormonal systems. Toxic
overload is the major contributor to a hyperactive or hypoactive immune system.
It should be obvious that with fewer toxins to contend with, you will experience
more energy, more vitality and be in better health.
The challenge then is to find a detoxification program designed to change these fat-
soluble toxins into a water-soluble form so they can then be easily flushed from the
system through the kidneys or colon.
The Function of the Liver
The primary function of the liver is blood filtration. In fact, two quarts of blood are
filtered through the liver every minute. Just as the oil filter in a car needs to be
changed regularly to maintain optimal function, the blood filter (liver) needs to be
cleansed periodically to keep your body functioning optimally. Some other functions of
It breaks down hormones for excretion.
o Example 1: Estrogen needs to be cleansed from a woman’s blood
every month after menstruation. If the liver is not functioning properly, high-estrogen
syndromes develop, like PMS or menopause symptoms.
o Example 2: The liver clears stress hormones like cortisol and
epinephrine from the blood. If this isn’t occurring adequately, emotional imbalances
like depression or anger as well as stress related illnesses could result. The latest
research has shown that a high level of blood cortisol is linked to persistent weight
gain, especially around the abdomen and buttocks. Therefore, detoxifying your liver
will assist with weight loss.
o Example 3: The liver converts thyroid hormone, T4, into the active
form, T3. If this conversion is not occurring, hypothyroid symptoms develop even if the
thyroid appears to be functioning properly!
It transforms carbohydrates, protein and fat to energy. If your liver is
functionally optimally, your metabolism naturally increases which encourages weight
The liver builds enzymes from good quality protein, reducing digestive
symptoms like heartburn, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhea.
It regulates blood sugar. The liver sends the messages to the pancreas
hormones (insulin and glucagon) to maintain ideal blood sugar levels.
o Excess sugar is converted to cholesterol and fat
o With low blood sugar, the liver converts protein and fat into sugar
The Detox Process of the Liver
The liver collects and removes foreign particles and chemicals from the blood and
detoxifies these poisons through three systems: (1) the Kupffer cells (2) Phase I and
Phase II systems involving more than 75 enzymes and (3) the production of bile. The
goal of all the liver’s detoxification system is to convert toxins into a water-soluble form
for easy elimination from the body via the stool or urine.
The major players in this filtering process are the Kupffer cells, a type of
stationary white blood cell that engulfs foreign matter in the blood before it passes
through the rest of the liver. When the liver is damaged, toxic, congested or sluggish,
the Kupffer cells become overburdened and the filtration system slows down, allowing
increased levels of antigens, foreign proteins, bowel microorganisms, and dietary
waste products to pass through the liver and enter the general circulatory system.
Inflammatory agents called cytokines are also released, contributing to the
development of inflammatory allergic conditions.
The most complex of the liver’s detoxification mechanisms are referred to as
Phase I and Phase II biotransformation systems. When a toxic chemical enters the
liver, these reactions begin to break these chemicals down into harmless substances:
1. PHASE I is the oxidation phase during which enzymes "burn" or oxidize
toxins into intermediate substances called free radicals. The problem is that free
radicals are actually MORE TOXIC than the original toxin. Thousands of scientific
studies have documented the link between free radical damage and diseases such as
cancer, heart disease, or allergies.
2. PHASE II enzymes act to combine the free radical with neutralizing
molecules, called antioxidants, to make the toxin water-soluble and easier for the body
to excrete. This critical phase is often sluggish because of the deficiency of
antioxidants in the diet, especially the typical American diet. (See below for a list of
foods high in antioxidant activity).
Bile is produced by the liver, stored in the gallbladder, and pumped into the
small intestine to digest dietary fats and acts to make intestinal contents less. Bile also
prevents putrefaction of intestinal contents and speeds up stool transit time.
1. iBile is the major route of eliminating cholesterol.
2. It carries many of the toxins broken down by the liver.
3. Bile binds to fiber, toxins included, to be carried through the intestinal
tract. With constipation, the stool remains in the colon too long so that toxins and
cholesterol get reabsorbed into the body. Therefore, FIBER IS A CRITICAL DIETARY
NUTRIENT TO ENSURE PROPER ELIMINATION OF TOXINS.

One of the key ways to detox is to keep the body in an alkaline state. The body’s acid-
alkaline balance adjusts throughout the day depending on the types of food we eat.
Grains and proteins leave an acidic residue when metabolized; fruit and
vegetables leave an alkaline residue.
Protein and grains are essential for our overall health and well-being, but if you
balance their intake with large amounts of fruit and vegetables our body is more likely
to remain alkaline.
Choose organic food and eat fruit and vegetables raw whenever possible to
make sure you obtain the maximum amount of nutrients.
Consume the following detox "superfoods" as often as you can:
Apple - Helps excrete heavy metals and cholesterol and is cleansing for the liver and
Olive oil - Antioxidant; prevents cholesterol from being transformed into a harmful free
Artichoke - Purifies and protects the liver and has a diuretic effect on the kidneys
Onion - Rich in the antioxidant quercetin, which protects against free radical damage;
onion enhances the activity of healthy intestinal flora and is antiviral
Asparagus - Superb detox food because of its diuretic effect; helps maintain healing
bacteria in the intestines
Parsley - Diuretic and helps kidneys to flush out toxins; contains phytonutrients that
support the liver and is rich in antioxidants
Broccoli - Like sprouts and cabbage, increases levels of glutathione, a key antioxidant
that helps the liver expel toxins
Quinoa - Easily digested cleansing grain that is a good source of protein, vitamins,
Carrot - Packed with beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant; antibacterial and
Rice - Brown rice in particular cleans the intestines as it passes through and prevents
constipation; antiallergenic and helps stabilize blood-sugar levels
Cranberry - Antioxidant-rich; destroys harmful bacteria in the kidneys, bladder and
Salad greens - Superb antioxidant and cleanser of the digestive tract
Fennel - Has a strong diuretic action and helps the body eliminate fats, reducing
Seaweed - Strong antioxidant; helps alkalinize the blood and strengthens the digestive
Garlic - Powerful antioxidant that is also excellent at eliminating toxic microorganisms
Tomato - Rich source of the antioxidant lycopene, thought to prevent a variety of
Ginger - Relieves abdominal bloating, nausea, and diarrhea. Helps to stimulate
digestive enzymes, aiding efficient digestion
Watercress - Purifies the blood and expels wastes from the body
Lemon - Stimulates the release of enzymes - an essential part of the liver’s
Yogurt - Live yogurt contains probiotics that reduce intestinal inflammation and fungal
infections and eliminate bad bacteria that damage the gut wall
Given proper nutrition, a healthy, properly functioning liver is capable of
removing unfriendly bacteria, viruses, fungi and toxic chemicals
The purpose of a detoxification supplements and protein is to provide essential
nutrients necessary for the detoxification process. It is also critical to eliminate food
and chemical irritants while detoxifying to reduce the burden on the liver and other

Therapeutic Herbs For the Liver
The bioflavinoids in Silymarin (milk thistle) has been used for centuries by European
herbalists for restoring liver function. Bioflavonoids are plant pigments with beneficial
properties: They protect against damage from destructive free radicals in the body and
enhance the activity of vitamin C. Silymarin accelerates the process of regenerating
damaged liver tissue, thereby freeing the organ to carry out its key functions. It has
been proven effective against certain types of mushroom and petrochemical solvent

G160 PreThion (another silymarin product)
M170L AdvaClear (includes silymarin, catechins and green tea leaf)
Other phytonutrients ("phyto" meaning plant) have demonstrated anti-inflammatory
activity on the liver through various mechanisms. Catechins (a bioflavonoid) are used
by European naturopaths and medical doctors to treat chemical hepatitis, cirrhosis,
and other environmental and viral forms of liver disease. Catechins can be taken as a
nutritional supplement. Green tea is a good source of catechins. Certain botanicals act
as Kupffer-cell stimulants, including burdock root, goldenseal, baptisia, similax,
Oregon grape root and Echinacea.
Liver and gall bladder cleanse
This is a natural way to effectively and painlessly remove from the gallbladder
and liver, most stones, gravel, crystals, debris and residues that hinder your
body's detoxification and healing. It cleanses the liver bile ducts and eventually
purifies the blood stream by making the liver cleaner and more efficient. It is not
unusual to also void copious quantities of parasites from the liver during this
cleanse; however, a parasite cleanse is indicated before and after the completed
This is a procedure you can do at home, over one weekend, using ingredients
from a local food store - for a little more than $10.00. In addition, it is non-toxic,
fast acting, has NO side effects, promotes increased well-being, raises the level
of available energy, provides freedom from most allergies, and it helps cope with
Although this procedure has been practiced with great success for untold
generations, its common use has largely been forgotten, and in this day and age
its propagation is not only unknown but even suppressed by the traditional
Purpose & health benefits of the liver/gall bladder cleanse
This cleanse is used to clean the liver and gall bladder of gall stones, gravel and
sand to dramatically improve your body's health. The liver cleanse also has the
ability to expel pollutants and toxins from the gallbladder and liver. You can
expect your allergies to disappear more and more with each subsequent cleanse.
Each liver cleanse "cures" a different set of allergies, suggesting that the liver is
compartmentalized - different parts having different duties. Incidentally, a liver
cleanse also eliminates most shoulder, upper arm and upper back pain.
We cannot advocate that this cleanse be used INSTEAD of a gallbladder
operation (only you or your physician can make that decision after learning all
about the benefits of this cleanse), however, since this procedure cannot
deteriorate such a condition, there is an excellent chance that such an operation
will indeed not be necessary after one or more of these liver cleanses. The main
advantage is of course that a liver cleanse not only purges the gallbladder of it
contents, but also does major house cleaning in the liver which an operation can

Introduction & physiological background
One of the main function of the liver is to make bile, 1 to 2 quarts in a day! The
liver is full of tubes (biliary tubules) that deliver the bile to one large tube - the
common bile duct. The gall bladder is attached to the common bile duct and acts
as a storage reservoir. Eating fat or protein triggers the gall bladder to squeeze
itself empty after about twenty minutes (or after ingesting the liver cleanse
solution). The stored bile finishes its trip down the common bile duct to the small
intestine and eventually to the colon (large intestine). Of course the gall bladder
does not hold enough bile to neutralize all of the liver cleanse solution you have
ingested. The empty gallbladder then signals its master, the liver, to dump all
available bile forcefully into the common bile duct as well. In this fashion, the
liver turns itself practically inside out and empties all of its available bile together
with stones, gravel and crystals to condition (treat) the bile using the potent liver
cleanse solution. Epsom salt serves to relax the tubules so that the passage of
larger stones is painless and smooth. The Epsom salt also serves to evacuate the
small and large intestines of feces.
For many persons, including children, the biliary ducts (tubing) are
choked with gallstones. Some develop allergies or hives, but some have no
symptoms at all. When the gall bladder is scanned or X-rayed, nothing is seen.
Typically, the worst stones are not in the gallbladder but in the liver. Not only
that, most are too small and not calcified, a pre-requisite for visibility on X-ray.
There are over half a dozen variety of gallstones, most of which have cholesterol
crystals in them. They can be black, red, white, green or tan colored. The green
ones get their color from being coated with bile. When dissected and observed
under a microscope, many have imbedded unidentified objects. Are they fluke
remains? Many are shaped like corks with longitudinal grooves below the tops.
We can visualize the blocked bile ducts from such shapes. Other stones are
composites - made from smaller ones - showing that they regrouped in the bile
duct some time after the last cleanse.
At the very center of each stone scientists found a clump of bacteria, suggesting
a dead bit of parasite might have started the formation of the stone. Perhaps it is
the liver's function to encapsulate parasite adults parasites to avoid getting
destroyed by such an invader. That's fine for one or two, but how about
thousands of such encapsulations?
Eventually the above-described defense mechanism turns into an immense
blockage that keeps the liver from detoxifying and eliminating harmful
substances such as solvents and parasites. You see, as the stones grow and
become more numerous, the back-pressure on the liver causes it to make less
bile, which is, of course the transportation medium for the undesirable
substances. Imagine the situation of your garden hose having marbles in it.
Much less water would flow, which in turn would decrease the ability of the hose
to squirt out the marbles. With gallstones and liver stones, much less excess
cholesterol leaves the body and cholesterol levels may rise. A liver cleanse will
invariably result in a lowering of cholesterol levels.
Also, gall/liver stones, being porous, can pick up bacteria, cysts, viruses and
parasite stages that are passing through the liver. In this way, "nests" of
infection are formed, constantly supplying the body with fresh irritating bacteria.
No stomach infection such as ulcers (check also into Manuka Honey as an
antidote for ulcers) or intestinal bloating can be cured permanently without
removing these stones from the gallbladder and liver.
Liver Cleanse Preparation
Cleansing the liver bile ducts is the most powerful procedure you can undertake
in order to improve your body's health. A liver cleanse should be done twice a
year if possible. Ideally, it should be part of a semi-annual kidney/liver/parasite
cleanse the sequence of which is very important and enhances the overall
Phase I (optional):
Do any dental work first, if possible. Ideally, your mouth should be metal free
and free of pathogenic bacteria. Ideally, all cavities should have been cleaned. A
toxic mouth can put a heavy load on the liver, burdening it immediately after
cleansing. Eliminate any tooth problem first for best results.
Phase II (optional):
Completing a kidney cleanse before cleansing the liver is also highly
recommended but not mandatory. You want your kidneys, bladder and urinary
tract in top condition so they can efficiently remove any substances incidentally
absorbed from the intestines as the bile is being secreted. The procedure is to
procure several different herbs from a herbal supply house and concoct a tea
which you sip, like a good wine, slowly, several times a day, for several weeks.
The result are fine clean kidneys and no more urinary tract infection. It takes
patience but it works! And it costs next to nothing!
Phase III (this phase is also optional):
Dr. Hulda Regehr Clark maintains that you can't clean a liver with living parasites
in it and that you won't get many stones out, and you may feel quite sick. So,
zap (see the end of this text for an address to procure a zapper or make your
own with the instructions in Clark's books) daily the week before or get through
the first three weeks of the parasite killing program before attempting a liver
cleanse. If you are on the maintenance program, do a high dose program the
Note by Healing Cancer Naturally: For background on Dr. Hulda Clark and “zapping”, see Dr.
Hulda Regehr Clark's detoxification protocols including long extracts from her books "The Cure
for all Diseases" and “The Cure for all Cancers". For more on zapping, also see Parasite Cleanse.
The above OPTIONAL steps are always desirable, but are not mandatory because
we have seen copious stone discharges, without the kidney or parasite cleanse
prior to the liver cleanse.
Phase IV (mandatory):
Drink apple juice for three days preceding the liver cleanse. For these three days,
eat frugally, if you must, and then only small amounts of raw unprocessed fruit
and/or vegetable salads. Every day take at least one full quart of high quality,
unfiltered, preferably home-made apple juice. You should be able to see the
sediments on the bottom of the container. The pectin in the apple juice helps to
soften and flatten the stones in the gall bladder and liver. This will also help their
passage through the bile ducts. This semi-fast also empties the intestines of their
food content and makes the collection of stones less problematic.

Choose a day like Saturday for the cleanse so that you can rest the next day.
Take no medicines, vitamins or other pills that you can do without. They could
hinder success of the cleanse.
Stop any parasite cleanse or kidney cleanse the day before.
Eat a no-fat fruit breakfast and light fat-free lunch such as cooked cereals with
fruit but no butter or milk. This allows the bile to build up and develop pressure
in the liver. Higher pressure pushes out more stones.
2:00 PM. Do not eat or drink after 2:00 o'clock. If you break this rule you could
feel quite uncomfortable later. Get your Epsom salts ready. At 2:00pm, mix 4
heaping tablespoons of Epsom salts in 3 cups of water, add 1/2 teaspoon of Vit C
powder and pour this into a jar. This makes four servings, 3/4 cup each. Please
keep in mind that the first serving begins at 6:00pm and the 2nd serving for the
evening is taken at 8:00pm. The other two required servings are reserved for
the following morning.
Place the jar in the refrigerator to get ice cold (this is for convenience and taste
only). Take an optional rectal enema before 4:00 PM with distilled (not
chlorinated) warm water to clean out your large intestines of any unwanted fecal
matter. The cleaner your intestines are, the easier it will be for the stones to be
eliminated. Besides, if you want to see just what you will be eliminating, it is
more appetizing to look only for stones and not be turned off by pungent stool.
6:00 PM. Drink one serving (3/4 cup) of the ice cold prepared Epsom salts water.
If you did not prepare this potion ahead of time at 2:00 PM, mix 1 heaping
tablespoon in 3/4 cup of water now. You may add 1/8 teaspoon of vitamin C
powder to improve the taste and to avoid 'the runs'. If you have no vitamin C
powder then add a little citrus juice to improve the taste; but this is entirely
optional. You can certainly drink a few mouthfuls of water afterwards or rinse
your mouth. Get the olive oil, lemons and grapefruit out to warm up a bit.
8:00 PM. Repeat the above by drinking another 3/4 cup of Epsom salts water.
You have not eaten since two o'clock, but you won't feel hungry. Get your
bedtime chores done now. Don't answer your telephone and be prepared to stay
by yourself for the balance of the evening. The timing of the actual cleanse is
relatively critical to achieve success. Do not be more than 10 minutes early or
late for anything that follows next.
9:45 PM. Pour 3/4 cup (measured cup) of your high quality olive oil into the pint
jar. Pour the prepared 3/4 cup of squeezed grapefruit and lemon juice into the
measuring cup, adding this to the oil. Close the jar tightly with its lid and shake
briskly until well mixed, almost watery. Only fresh squeezed juice will do this.
Now visit the bathroom one or more times, even if this makes you slightly late
for your ten o'clock drink. Be ready to go to bed and STAY in bed. Don't clean up
the kitchen. Do it the next day.
10:00 PM. Take the solution to your bedside if you want, but drink it standing
up. Drink the potion you have mixed. If you have them, take four optional
Ornithine capsules with the first sips to make sure you will sleep through the
night. Take eight if you already suffer from insomnia. Get all of it down
immediately, if possible. Very elderly, or weak persons, should space this over a
period of five minutes.
Lie down immediately. The sooner you lie down, the more stones you will get
out. Put your knees up to your chest in a fetal position. Lie on your right side for
at least half an hour. The oil/citrus juice mixture will go to your gallbladder and
liver. These organs will not know what to do with THAT much oil emulsion, so
they will spasm and throw off all the available bile - plus stones, gravel and
One half hour later - you may turn on your back with a good thick feather pillow.
Try to think about what is happening in the liver. Think loving thoughts - your
liver is sensitive and responsive to feelings of resentment, vindictiveness and
hate. Try to keep perfectly still for about half an hour or at least 20 minutes.
Visualize the cleansing action taking place. You may feel a train of stones
traveling along the bile ducts like marbles. There is little likelihood of pain
because the bile duct valves are open - thanks to the Epsom salts.
Relax and go to sleep. Let nature do her thing. Tomorrow you will be cleaner,
much cleaner, and also healthier than before.
Next morning (early): Upon wakening, take your thirddose of prepared Epsom
salt solution. If you have indigestion or nausea (highly unlikely), wait until this is
gone before drinking the Epsom salts. Don't take this potion before 6:00 AM. It
would be best if you don't get up and have someone else give you this potion.
This drink will act as a mild laxative and provoke several later loose bowel
movements. Drink more water than usual to replenish lost liquids.
2 hours later. Take your fourth (the last one - Thank God!) dose of Epsom salts.
Drink 3/4 cup of the mixture. You may go back to bed if you like.
After 2 more hours you may get up and take something into your empty
stomach. Start with some fresh-made fruit juice. Half an hour later, eat some
fruit. One hour later you may eat regular food but keep it light, uncooked and
natural. By supper of the next day (Sunday) you should feel fully recovered and
ready to slay a dragon.
How well did you do?
Expect diarrhea in the morning of the second day (Sunday). The ideal way to see
what you are actually eliminating is to defecate into a white porcelain bowl or
large white plastic bucket. The bowl or bucket is used instead of the toilet to also
see the reddish crystals which collect at the bottom of the bowl (the stones float
on top) and those crystals would ordinarily be lost somewhere at the
bottomless hole in the toilet and you would have missed them. If you don't care
to see the crystals - by all means, use the toilet.
Another way would be to use the toilet and look into it for the stones with a
flashlight. Look for the greenish kind, since this is proof that they are genuine
gallstones and not food residue. Only bile from the liver is green. The bowel
movement (if there is any) sinks, but gall and liver stones float because of the
cholesterol content. Eventually, you may have to eliminate up to 2,000 stones, in
several sessions, over a period of a year or so, before the liver is clean enough to
rid you of all allergies or upper back, or other symptoms, permanently. The first
cleanse may rid you of them for a while, but as the stones from the rear of the
liver travel forward, they might give you the same symptoms again. For best
results, if this is the first time you do this, repeat the Liver Cleanse two weeks
later because the liver cleanses in stages - moving deeper toxins and debris and
parasites into lower and more shallow areas of the liver tissues. You may repeat
this gallbladder/liver cleanse at two-month intervals until no more stones come
out. Then, do the cleanse as a maintenance every six months. Two tablespoons
of fresh olive oil per day will provide optimum liver performance.
Never purge when you are ill. Pregnant mothers should consult their pediatrician.
The elderly should do this purge under the supervision of a health specialist.
Drink lots of water during the second and third day.
Sometimes, the bile ducts are full of cholesterol crystals that did not form into
round stones. They appear as a "chaff" floating on top of the toilet bowl water. It
may be tan colored, harboring millions of tiny white crystals. Cleansing this chaff
is just as important as purging stones.
How safe is the liver cleanse?
It is very safe. Professionals and individuals have conducted thousands of liver
purges, including many persons in their seventies and eighties. We have heard
nobody ending up in a hospital, and none reported pain. The author, in over a
dozen years of private practice, has never seen any complications. This liver
purge could make you feel a little uncomfortable for a day or two thereafter.
Stirred-up toxins are in solution, begging to be released.
