Period 5 by Luke Flynn

As I peer outside my prison walls
Unexpectedly the teacher calls
He questions my attention
and of course my next intention
"Mr Flynn my jolly good friend
It seems you do not comprehend!"
Of course I do not understand
Your lesson is just far too bland!
The foreign language that you speak
Might as well be something Greek
For nothing that you say is clear
and your algebra brings me fear

Perspiration starts to collect
while nothing seems to be correct
So many numbers inside my head
My result; I am starting to dread
The clock is ticking away
Gee, I hate this time of day
I wonder how my parents will react?
I hope my body will still be intact
They made it clear to me not to fail,
"One more bad test and your up for sale"
'Three, two, one' and I'm out of here
The bell sounds and I disappear

Tomorrow comes around too quickly
Period five, I'm feeling sickly
This will be the moment of truth
The warden glares at his class of youth
Papers are quickly handed back
I may just have a heart attack
I slowly glance at the mark in red
And pull my jumper over my head
No way I cry, could this be right?
To see that mark was quite a sight
Fifty one percent, I have passed
The teacher smiled and said, "At last!"
2) My Most Memorable Day by Luke Flynn

As I sit beside my Nan's bed,
I focus on today's events
Questioning what the infortune represents
The room was still; nothing said.
Chaos was gone and many had fled
My heart divided in segments
The many experiences it now prevents
So many memories go through my head

Too soon, her life was taken away
Both her heart and mine had been cheated
Why did god choose her to betray,
And why did it have to be this way
This is what I thought about while seated
Today will always be a memorable day
3) Poem Analysis: "Funeral Blues" by W.H. Auden:
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

 In the poem “Funeral Blues”, W.H. Auden has deeply expressed his feelings towards the death of his
lover. He has used a variety of language features including: imagery, metaphors, symbolism and
hyperboles to portray the grief he was feeling. Auden has also used word choice to convey death
and mourning.

From the title and first stanza it is obvious to the reader that the poem is about death and the
emotional affects the event has had on Auden. This is evident through the quote, “Stop all the
clocks”. This strongly suggests that time has run out and life has ended through the symbolism of
clocks. The reference to the telephone, the dog barking and to silencing of the piano’s all relate to
Auden’s request for the noise to stop so that mourning can begin without the interruption of
insignificant distractions. This also illustrates his grief and stress at that point in time.

In the second stanza Auden focuses on the death. He does this by using symbolism and imagery. For
example “Put the crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves, let the traffic policeman
wear black cotton gloves”. As doves and black gloves are traditional to funerals this would
symbolism mourning. The words ‘He is dead’ in the second line also make it clear the event clear to
the reader and is quite severe and unexpected while it reflects the pain of death.

There is a significant change in emotion noted in the Third stanza. Auden has gone from explaining
to his readers about the event of death and now focuses more on his emotions and how important
his lover really was to him. He has done this through the use of metaphors and writing in third
person. For example, “He was my North, my South, my East and West”. This quote really stresses
that he was everything to Auden and his whole life revolved around him. It also points out that his
greatest love is now unexpectedly gone and the loss he is feeling is very evident because of how
much he meant to him.

The final stanza expresses how the beauty of things doesn’t matter anymore now that his lover has
gone while also showing Auden’s sheer distress. He does not see how he could possibly go on living
without his true love. This is expressed through the quote, ‘For nothing now can ever come to any
good’. As a final statement to the poem this quote really leaves an impression on the readers
leaving them feeling sympathetic for Auden’s loss. It also shows us the love the pair shared and the
grief that comes with such an event almost like Auden is not able to see beyond the mourning.

The theme of grief is evident throughout the poem and is exaggerated through hyperboles
especially. The Use of a simple structure, rhyming scheme and vocabulary also reiterates that Auden
has lost sight of the beauty in the world which is blocked by devastation and depression.
                4) Kate Miller-Heike – Caught in a crowd

There was a guy at my school when I was in high school
We'd ride side by side in the morning on our bicycles
Never even spoken or faced each other
But on the last hill we'd race each other

When we reached the racks we'd each go our own way
I wasn't in his classes, I didn't know his name
When we finally got to speak he just stared at his feet
And mumbled a sentence that ended with 'James'

I was young and caught in the crowd
I didn't know then what I know now
I was dumb, and I was proud
And I'm sorry
If I could go back do it again
I'd be someone you could call friend
Please please believe that I'm sorry

Well he was quite a big guy, kinda shy and quiet
When the kids called him weird he didn't try to deny it
Every lunchtime he'd spend walking by himself
Round the boundary of the grounds til he heard the bell

Well one day I found him, joined him on his walk
We were silent for a while until we started to talk
I told him my family were fighting in court
He said his step-dad and him always fought

We talked about music? He was into punk
Told me all the bands that I liked were junk
I said I'd never heard the songs the sex pistols sang
I laughed back at him and then the bell rang

I was young and caught in the crowd
I didn't know then what I know now
I was dumb, and I was proud
And I'm sorry
If I could go back do it again
I'd be someone you could call friend
Please please believe that I'm sorry

It was after school in the afternoon
The corridors were crowded as we came out of the rooms
Three guys I knew pushed him into the cement
Threw away his bag and said he had no friends
He yelled that he did and he looked around
Tried getting up but they pushed him on down
That's when he saw me, called out my name
And I turned my back, and just walked away

I was young and caught in the crowd
I didn't know then what I know now
I was dumb, and I was proud

   5) Interview: Kate Miller-Heidke – ‘Caught in the Crowd’
Luke: Good morning listeners. Here, today in the studio with me we have Kate Miller-Heidke to talk
to us about her new hit single ‘Caught in a Crowd’.

Luke: Kate thanks for coming in today. So Kate, why did you write this song in the first place and
what were you trying to achieve?

Kate: Well I think in today’s society we often generalize people so much that we tend to judge a
person just because they’re ‘different’ or unique. So I think this song was a way for me to express
sorry to that person I wrongfully neglected because as you may know the song is about a boy I
ignored back in school. Yet If I had of been more accepting I probably would of made a great friend
but was too scared to ruin my image in doing so. So basically I was just trying to make people see
that it’s wrong to ‘judge a book by its cover’ and if you learn to become more accepting of other
you’re going to make life a lot easier for yourself.

Luke: So then what does the title ‘Caught in a crowd’ really mean to you?

Kate: As I said before the song is about a boy I ignored at school so for me the title represents my
ignorant attitude to be honest. This is why I used the words ‘caught in a crowd’ as it demonstrates
that I was so ‘strung up’ about my social image that I neglected him basically, even when he needed
me most and chose to follow the majorities perception of him. Hence I was stupidly ‘caught in the
crowd’ or in other words didn’t want to be associated with him in fear of others judgments.

Luke: I see, so if this song is more of a recount of your childhood what messages does the song
portrays and how do they relate to today’s society?

Kate: I think the song conveys one clear and significant message which is not to discriminate against
someone due differences as I strongly believe that it’s a case of bullying. Also this not only happens
with children but many adults are subject to discrimination especially in the workforce and don’t
deserve to be treated in that way. Hence in the society of today discrimination is a real issue we
must avoid as it can have dramatic affects on people’s lives especially adults even more so then
children at times.

Luke: Kate, would you say that adults, like children are also that fearful of others judgments that
they choose to ignore people with differences?

Kate: Yes, definitely. I’ve seen examples of this fear on many occasions and it’s surprising because
you would think as adult’s people would be mature enough to realize that each individual has special

Luke: So why do you think this is so common?

Kate: To tell you the truth I’m not exactly sure because as adults I don’t see the need for it but I
would say it may be as a result of how the media portrays certain personalities.

Luke: Interesting, how do you suppose people in today’s society act upon this then?
Katie: I would say to all people out there listening today that if you know someone who you or
others think is a little ‘different’ and don’t really socialize with them to just give it a go. You may find
them to have a great personality when you didn’t even know it or better you could find a good
friend. Also don’t be afraid to apologize if you have ever neglected someone in the past. It will take a
small effort but could make a huge difference in someone’s life.
