OUR STRENGTHS There are many advantages to choosing Olympia Dairy Barn Systems for your new dairy facility operation or for expansion of your existing dairy facility. Olympia’s galvanized pre-engineered steel buildings are truly laborless “lifetime” dairy barns. They are virtually maintenance free and provide better ventilation, less disease, and lower insurance costs than other types of buildings. The open span of our galvanized steel freestall and dry cow barns allows for better air movement, providing a cleaner and cooler environment in the summer months. Whether you decide on a rotary milking parlor, a herringbone milking parlor or parallel milking parlor layout, our parlor systems are designed to maximize throughput, cow comfort, and proper cow positioning. Our galvanized pre-engineered steel dairy facility buildings are impervious to mold, mildew or rust, they provide no places for birds to roost and defecate, and give you more comfortable cows, better milk production, and a better bottom line. Types of Olympia Dairy Barn Systems Olympia specializes in the design of parlor systems that maximize throughput, cow comfort and proper cow positioning, with easy to install and easily serviceable any size milking equipment to accommodate any design, including ultra efficient designs which integrate the milking center with office and equipment areas. Also integral to our dairy facility designs are a subway for milking equipment, milk testing area and stainless steel refrigerator, milk wash vat & cooling system, and milk loading area. Free Stall Dairy Barns Naturally ventilated free stall barns have become the mainstay of the dairy industry. Olympia galvanized clear span free stall dairy barns are open, airy, well ventilated galvanized steel buildings with wide open layouts, 28 ft bay spacing & no posts to deal with. Olympia freestall dairy barns are bright with good lighting and equipment integrated into the building design for the most efficient layout for light and ventilation. Well-designed freestall barns, with easy access to water and easy cattle flow, wide outside rows and open ventilation equal comfortable cows. Olympia Freestall Dairy Barn Systems incorporate an innovative integral moveable side curtain system with dual curtain drive units and galvanized curtain doors, which allow airflow and exposure to the outside elements to be controlled. A manual curtain door drive unit is also available. Olympia's open ridge ventilation system allows for ample air exchange, venting the large quantities of heat and moisture produced by cows. Other barn systems that may be closed too tightly allow condensation to form on interior surfaces and become damp, conditions which are uncomfortable and unhealthy for cows and can accelerate building deterioration. The bottom line is whether cows are comfortable because comfortable cows mean higher milk production. Olympia freestall dairy barns are continuously filled with fresh, outside air providing a healthy and comfortable environment for cows to maintain their productivity throughout the year regardless of hot summer or cold winter weather conditions. Our design team can also assist with other building designs, such as tunnel ventilated heifer facilities, calf barns, or any other building to fit your needs and budget. That is the advantage of working with our design team. Olympia Freestall Dairy Barns Feature • Well lit and ventilated open ridge 4:12 roof pitch with a choice of sidewall heights. A roof pitch that is too low may cause warm moist air to become trapped against the cold roof surfaces and condensation occurs. A roof pitch that is too steep may cause fresh air to be poorly distributed at cow level during cold weather. High, open sidewalls increase airflow for summer cooling. The sidewall height should also allow for the clearance of any machinery that may be used in the barn. • Open ridge ventilation system with positive ventilation. In winter, wind blowing across an open ridge creates a suction that draws warm, humid air out of the building. At the same time, fresh, dry, cool air is drawn in through the sidewall openings. Only minimal amounts of rain and snow will enter a properly sized open ridge when the freestall barn is fully populated. • Bird protection. Olympia Dairy Facility Systems buildings provide no opportunity for birds to roost. Roosting or perching birds foul building parts, feed, and animals with bird droppings. Birds also destroy insulation by pecking and burrowing into the material. • Adjustable sidewall openings. Our innovative sidewall curtain system can be adjusted for changing weather conditions and completely opened to increase air flow during hot weather. These curtains, placed above cow level, can be easily adjusted or rolled up completely. • Minimum insulation (R = 2) under the roof sheets reduces solar heat loading on hot, sunny days. • Specially designed over-hang fits opening for better ventilation and minimizes the entry of sun, snow, and rain through open sidewalls. The overhang also protects rolled up curtains, keeps snow that slides from the roof farther from the barn, and provides an over hang for the walk way along freestall barn to the cattle loading area. Features of Olympia Dairy Barn Systems Designed to Work Together -Vet Room, Office & Cattle Loading: Vet Treating Area: The Vet area can incorporate the work area between the catch lane and the palpation lane and treated pens, allowing the use of a cart to hold supplies and a laptop computer for keeping herd health records. The herdsmans' office adjacent to the veterinary work area can be equipped with cabinets, a sink, and a refrigerator for storage of veterinary supplies and drugs. A freezer for colostrum can be located here or in a milk utility room located next to the small milking parlor. A heated treatment room can be provided to be used for on-farm surgeries during cold weather. The treatment pen can be used to isolate an individual or to hold a cow for observation. Cow Sorting area: Promotes smooth cow movement with maximum safety for handlers and cows. Calving Area /Calving Pens: Our design team can assist with head locks, catch gates, and calf holding pens. Cattle Loading Area: Concrete areas can be designed to your specific needs, whether it may be semi loading or trailer loading. Holding Area The milking parlor design and capacity will determine the size of the holding area where cows wait to enter the milking parlor. Cows are milked twice a day on most farms, but a 10% increase in milk production may be obtained by milking the cows three times a day. It is necessary to factor in the number of milkings a day, the climate, and production level expected to determine the holding area size required. Feed Storage Area: Feed storage and feeding systems account for a considerable number of buildings and structures on dairy farms. Olympia Dairy Farm Systems can design and supply all your feed and commodity storage needs. Dry hay may be stored in a separate hay barn. Silage may be stored in bunkers silos, concrete stave silos, or oxygen limiting silos, such as HarvestoreT. Commodity feeds are typically stored in a commodity barn that has several bays, one for each commodity, and commodity sheds are usually constructed to allow delivery of one semi-trailer of the commodity in each bay. Manure Handling: There are three types of manure handling systems typically used for freestall barns: Manual scraping, Flush systems, and Automatic alley scrapers. Olympia Dairy Barn Systems will help you understand what you need and design the right solution for your freestall barn. Our manure handling systems designs make for easy manure handling -our manure gutter barn to manure system works even in winter. Our Dairy Facility designs may also include the manure gutter and sand settling pit, manure pumps for flushing gutters and holding area with interchangeable pumps, a concrete apron to let solids dry out before hauling, liquid manure pumped to the Slurry store and the manure lagoon. Milking parlors: The milking parlor is the heart of the dairy, central to the profitability and productivity of the dairy facility. The size and type of milking parlor is one of the most important decisions made in the design of a new dairy facility. Olympia specializes in the design of parlor systems that maximize throughput, cow comfort and proper cow positioning, with easy to install and easily serviceable any size milking equipment to accommodate any design, including ultra efficient designs which integrate the milking center with office and equipment areas. Also integral to our dairy facility designs are a subway for milking equipment, milk testing area and stainless steel refrigerator, milk wash vat & cooling system, and milk loading area. Herringbone milking parlor design: The herringbone milking parlor design is one of the most popular types of parlors. In this type of design, the cows enter and stand next to each other, facing away from the milking operator's pit at an angle. The herringbone parlors are located on the end of a rectangular holding area allowing cows to enter single file directly into either side of the parlor. On completion of milking, rapid exit design allows all cows to exit at once past the holding area, expediting the milking process. Parallel milking parlor design: Parallel milking parlors are similar to herringbone milking parlors in design except that in the parallel milking parlor design cows stand perpendicular to the milking operator pit rather than at an angle, and the cows are milked from the rear between the cow's hind legs rather than from the side. The cow platform is wider than in a herringbone parlor to accommodate the length of the cow. The advantage of the parallel parlor design is that the cows stand closer together so the walking distance for the milkers is shorter than in a herringbone parlor design. The disadvantage is that cows must be milked from behind, so the tail will often be in the way, and it may be a long reach to the cow's teats for some milkers. Rotary or Carousel Milking Parlor Design: Rotary parlors are gaining in popularity for large dairy farms with herds in excess of 1,000 cows. With the rotary milking parlor design, the platform on which the cows stand moves around like a carousel while the cleaners and milkers stand in one location. The rotary carousel milking parlor design is advantageous because of its high efficiency. Since cow movement functions are largely automated, one operator can run the entire milking operation from the same position while the cows come by quickly, and enter and exit at a constant rate with no break between cows. Single 5 milking parlor for Fresh and Treated Cows: Olympia Dairy Farm Facility Systems incorporate a separate milking area for cows that produce unmarketable milk, such as fresh and treated cows. Yes. Call us toll free at 1.888.449.7756 for area specific information. What are the buildings made of? Olympia buildings are made of 100% U.S. commercial grade steel. How secure is the framing? Steel framed buildings are fastened together with bolts and screws. The connections remain secure because there is so little movement in the frame. Nailed together connections in traditional construction become loose due to shrinkage and warping of the wooden frame. Steel does not warp, shrink, or change with time so the connections remain secure. What will it cost to ship the building to me? Freight cost will vary with the weight of the building and the destination location. To save our customers money on shipping expenses we use a packing strategy called share-loading to ship as many buildings as possible in one full semi truck load. Are the buildings painted? Yes, the walls and trim are painted with a long-lasting factory-applied paint manufactured by Akzo Nobel, the leading manufacturer of heavy duty, high performance protective coatings for steel. Can I choose a paint color for my building? Yes. You can choose from ten wall colors and four trim colors backed by a 40-year warranty. Are the buildings insulated? We offer many types of insulation with a range of R-values for you to choose from. Our technicians can help you determine what insulation type will best suit your steel building needs. Can I put doors and windows on my steel building? Yes. Our steel buildings can be customized to incorporate doors, windows, ceiling lights, and more. Your sales representative will gladly help you design and customize the right building for you. How long does it take to get my building delivered to me? Because we design every metal steel building individually for each customer, delivery time varies from project to project. Your sales representative can give you a better idea of your delivery time after understanding your requirements. Will my building meet local building codes and wind and snow load requirements? Every Olympia building is engineered to comply with regional building codes, wind load and snow load requirements. We will design your building to meet the requirements of your local building codes and provide drawings stamped and certified by one of our registered engineers. Who will erect my building? Since Olympia provides easy to follow erection drawings and an erection manual with every building shipped, many of our customers erect their buildings themselves.
