A Which one just doesn’ belong? t B C 1 WTC 7 on afternoon of 9-11-01 9-11• WTC 7 was ~350 feet from WTC 1. • WTC7 is the tall sky-scraper in the back-ground, right. Seen from WTC 1 area. WTC-7 was never hit by a plane, yet it collapsed at 5:20 WTCpm on 9-11-2001 (over 7 hours after the twin towers 9- 11had fallen).. What made it collapse? Random damage + FIRE is official theory Random fires. • Not much smoke or visible damage “ ENGINEERS ARE BAFFLED OVER THE COLLAPSE OF 7 WTC” “ STEEL MEMBERS HAVE BEEN PARTLY EVAPORATED” New York Times, 29 Nov. 2001 • “ Almost lost in the chaos of the WTC 7 shows damage to SW corner, but it does NOT topple over that way at all. (NIST data and slide.) collapse of the World Trade Center is a mystery that under normal circumstances would probably have captured the attention of the city and the world. That mystery is the collapse of a nearby 47-story, two-million-square-foot building [WTC 7].” • “ Experts said no building like it, a modern, steelreinforced high-rise, had ever collapsed because of an uncontrolled fire, and engineers have been trying to figure out exactly what happened and whether they should be worried about other buildings like it around the country.” • “ Sprayed on the steel, almost like imitation snow in holiday decorations, was a layer of fireproofing material.. Although the fireproofing was intended to withstand ordinary fires for at least two hours, experts said buildings the size of 7 World Trade Center that are treated with such coatings have never collapsed in a fire of any duration.” • “ Most of the other buildings in the [area] stood despite suffering damage of all kinds, including fire.” • “ ..Fire and the structural damage … would not explain steel members in the debris pile that appear to have been partly • [It was NOT hit by a jet.] evaporated”Dr. Barnett said. , 2 WTC-7 had 24 steel-beam core columns and 57 WTCsteelperimeter columns, asymmetrically positioned. What could make steel columns fail so the building would collapse straight down, rapidly and symmetrically? • Official FEMA report states: “ The collapse WTC7 collapsed straight down, neardown, nearsymmetrically onto its footprint • “ Demolishing the building so that it collapses straight down into its own footprint (the total area at the base of the building). This feat requires such skill that only a handful of demolition companies in the world will attempt it.” Using explosives, of course, not fires! of WTC 7 had a small debris field as the facade was pulled downward, suggesting an internal failure and implosion… The average debris field radius was approximately 70 feet.” [Agreed!] • The 47-story WTC-7 collapsed down symmetrically and completely, neatly onto its own footprint with little damage to surrounding buildings, at 5:20 pm on 911-2001. All 24 core + 57 steel columns were destroyed. And remember, it was NEVER hit by a jet plane! • Here’ the neat rubble pile from WTC7: s • Collapse was Symmetric, Straight-down, • Near free-fall Speed, with Squibs • Steel support column arrangement in WTC 7, view looking down on the roof. Circled columns were possibly damaged due to WTC1 debris • Hmmmm… It doesn’ take a rocket t scientist to see that this is surprising for collapse for random damage and fires. • Suggests controlled demolition = implosion Typical non-controlled noncollapses: Not Symmetric • Not all support-columns fail simultaneously, so building topples over, not straight down • Shown, due to large earthquakes • Note: WTC7 fell 7 hrs after WTC1, not due to seismic waves • Steel-beam frames hold buildingblocks together. (And no “ pulverizing”of concrete.) FAST! Straight-down collapse of WTC 7 in ~6.6 seconds. StraightFree-fall time for roof falling 47 stories, t=SQRT(2Height/g) = 6.0 sec. Freesec. Momentum Conservation requires “ pancaking floors”(official FEMA/NIST theory) hitting stationary concrete floors would slow fall: But no consideration of Conservation of Momentum in FEMA or NIST. NIST. Rapid, straight-down collapse implies use of well-placed explosives, straightwellto remove steel and concrete supports out of the way. Explosive Demolition: “ Typically, the actual implosion only takes a few seconds [falls in near freefall time]. “ many onlookers, the speed of To destruction is the most incredible aspect of an implosion. How can a building that took months and months to build, and stood up to the elements for a hundred years or more, collapse into a pile of rubble as if it were a sand castle? • “ Following the blast, a cloud of dust billows out around the wreckage, enveloping nearby spectators.” 3 FEMA questions their own “ -collapse”theory firefire • FEMA report [May 2002] authors conclude: •“ The specifics of the fires in WTC 7 and how they caused the building to collapse remain unknown at this time. Although the total diesel fuel on the premises contained massive potential energy, the best 9-11 Commission Report (July 2004) Totally Ignores the WTC 7 Collapse. FEMA waffles. NIST punts. Collapse. hypothesis [fire then complete collapse] has only a low probability of occurrence. Further research, investigation, and analyses are needed to resolve this issue.” • Unfortunately for investigators hoping to resolve this issue, much of the evidence had already been destroyed by FEMA by the time the FEMA report was published. For example, nearly all the steel beams were shipped hurriedly to Asia for “ recycling.” • One would have hoped that the issue would be resolved by the 9-11 Commission, since they claim to give “ fullest possible account of the the events surrounding 9/11.” • However, without explanation, the 9-11 Commission Report simply ignores the collapse of WTC 7 on 9-11-01. • Overlooking crucial data is highly suspicious… • FEMA admitted its best hypothesis –fire + impact damage –had “ low probability” • And NIST’ WTC7 collapse analysis –long s overdue –first “ decoupled” from Towers’ study, and now has been referred to a an outside contractor! • What is going on? The WTC towers were solidly constructed… 47 steel core columns and 240 perimeter steel perimeter beams. 287 steel-columns total. steelFlammable office materials were not piled up next to the steel columns. columns. Steel Temps OVER 650 °C Required for Failure (applies to all WTC buildings, in official theory) • (Eagar and Musso, 2001, emphasis added.) "The fire is the most misunderstood part of the WTC collapse. Even today, the media report (and many scientists believe) that the steel melted. It is argued that the jet fuel burns very hot, especially with so much fuel present. This is not true.... The temperature of the fire at the WTC was not unusual, and it was most definitely not capable of melting steel. A fireplace is a diffuse flame burning in air, as was the WTC fire… . The maximum flame temperature increase for burning hydrocarbons (jet fuel) in air is, thus, about 1000 °C -- hardly sufficient to melt steel at 1500 °C. • But it is very difficult to reach [even] this maximum temperature with a diffuse flame. There is nothing to ensure that the fuel and air in a diffuse flame are mixed in the best ratio... This is why the temperatures in a residential fire are usually in the 500 °C to 650 °C range [Cote, 1992]. It is known that the WTC fire was [such] a fuel-rich, diffuse flame as evidenced by the copious black smoke.... • It is known that structural steel begins to soften around 425 °C and loses about half of its strength at 650 °C [Cote, A. E., editor, Fire Protection Handbook 17th Edition, Quincy, Maine: National Fire Protection Association, 1992 ]. This is why steel is stress relieved in this temperature range. But even a 50% loss of strength is still insufficient, by itself, to explain the WTC collapse... The WTC, on this low-wind day, was likely not stressed more than a third of the design allowable... Even with its strength halved, • the steel could still support two to three times the stresses imposed by a 650 °C fire...” http://911research.wtc7.net/disinfo/experts/articles/eagar_jom/eagar_0112.html • Steel-frame: Huge core and heat sink. Not Hollow! • Bazant and Zhou (2001) require 800 °C for structural steel failure. • So the steel temperature would have to be 650 °C - 800 °C for failure: Eagar/Musso & Bazant/Zhou 4 The NIST Report: No evidence for steel temps above 600 ºC – Not hot enough to cause global failure. • “ Observations of paint cracking due to thermal expansion. Of the more than 170 areas examined on 16 perimeter column panels, only three columns had evidence that the steel reached temperatures above 250ºC: east face, floor 98, inner web; east face, floor 92, inner web; and north face, floor 98, floor truss connector. [Towers.] Only two core column specimens had sufficient paint remaining to make such an analysis, and their temperatures did not reach 250 ºC. ... Minoru NISTWTC- Yamasaki, architect and designer of the WTC, in a book by Angus K Gillespie: TWIN Yamasaki, TOWERS: THE LIFE OF NEW YORK CITY'S WORLD TRADE CENTER stated, "We designed the towers to take multiple 707 jet strikes." http://www.biblio.com/details.php?dcx=28002710&src= http://www.biblio.com/details.php?dcx=28002710&src=frg • Fire tests, NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology) 5 Whistleblower: Underwriter Lab scientist objects to NIST report Letter from Kevin Ryan (UL) to Dr. Frank Gayle (NIST) • Kevin Ryan wrote about Underwriter Labs “ performing tests on models of the [WTC] floor assemblies. But the results of these tests… indicate that the buildings should have easily withstood the thermal stress caused by ..burning jet fuel [and office materials].” • [NOTE: Underwriter Labs set up models of the WTC building components and tested them… but they did not fail as required by the official story of 9-11.] • “ We know that the steel components were certified to ASTM E119. The time temperature curves for this standard require the samples to be exposed to temperatures around 2000F (1090 C) for several hours… • “ Your comments suggest that the steel was probably exposed to temperatures of only about 500F (250C), which is what one might expect from a thermodynamic analysis of the situation. • He states that the temperatures were insufficient to cause collapse, and concludes: • “ This [“ official” story just does not add up… .” ] How does one get from available data (NO tall steel-frame building collapses before due steelto fires/damage, ever) to three complete WTC collapses on one day (9-11)? (9- NIST (Nat’Inst. Of Standards and l Technology) “ Simulations” • Actual fire tests with models sponsored by NIST did NOT fail or collapse! • No other high-rise, steel-frame buildings have collapsed due to fires + damage. What to do? • Computer simulations! • Page 142: “ The Investigation Team then defined three cases for each building by combining the middle, less severe, and more severe values of the influential variables. Upon a preliminary examination of the middle cases, it became clear that the towers would likely remain standing. The less severe cases were discarded… The middle cases… were discarded after the structural response analysis of major subsystems were compared to observed events. • The more severe case (which became Case B for WTC 1 and Case D for WTC 2) was used for the global analysis of each tower. Complete sets of simulations were then performed for Cases B and D. To the extent that the simulations deviated from the photographic evidence or eyewitness reports [e.g., complete collapse occurred], the investigators adjusted the input, but only within the range of physical reality. Thus, for instance,… the pulling forces on the perimeter columns by the sagging floors were adjusted... • Page 180: The primary role of the floors in the collapse of the towers was to provide inward pull forces that induced inward bowing of perimeter columns. • Objections: UK experts complained that “ core columns cannot pull the the exterior [i.e., perimeter] columns in via the floor.” (Lane and Lamont, 2005, ARUP) Structural Engineers strongly criticize the final NIST report on WTC collapses: New Civil Engineer, October 6, 2005. Engineer, • “ World Trade Center disaster investigators [at NIST] are refusing to show computer visualizations of the collapse of the Twin Towers despite calls from leading structural and fire engineers, NCE has learned. • Visualisations of collapse mechanisms are routinely used to validate the type of finite element analysis model used by the [NIST] investigators. • The collapse mechanism and the role played by the hat truss at the top of the tower has been the focus of debate since the US National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) published its findings… . • University of Manchester [U.K.] professor of structural engineering Colin Bailey said there was a lot to be gained from visualising the structural response. “ NIST should really show the visualisations; otherwise the opportunity to correlate them back to the video evidence and identify any errors in the modeling will be lost,” he said… . • A leading US structural engineer said NIST had obviously devoted enormous resources to the development of the impact and fire models. “ comparison the By global structural model is not as sophisticated,”he said. “ The software used [by NIST] has been pushed to new limits, and there have been a lot of simplifications, extrapolations and judgment calls.” (Parker, 2005; emphasis added.) • SE Jones raised some of the same concerns in his paper (see ST911.org, Jones) • Here we have serious concerns about the NIST WTC collapse report raised by structural civil engineers, AFTER the final NIST report was issued, augmenting the arguments raised by a physicist. 6 Strong critiques of official FEMA report • “ Respected members of the fire protection engineering community are beginning to raise red flags, and a resonating [result] has emerged: The Civil Engineer’ comment on Official Reports s • 1. A couple of months back I examined [Jones] claims in detail. Initially I was a bit incredulous - the sheer number of players that would have to be involved is extraordinary** - so I downloaded all the official reports basically expecting to find holes in the good prof's hypothesis. • I'm a professional civil engineer with a lot of experience in the construction of major structures and I was just astounded at what I found. In my COO days if my staff had put up reports like that relating to a disaster on my patch, there is no way they would have been accepted and I would have been asking some very tough questions. • The [official] reports are not at all convincing. • That they are not is a serious worry. Take care. Except for the marginal benefit obtained from a three-day, visual walk-through of evidence sites conducted by ASCE investigation committee membersdescribed by one close source as a "tourist trip"-no one's checking the evidence for anything. • “ Some citizens are taking to the streets to protest the investigation sellout. Sally Regenhard, for one, wants to know why and how the building fell as it did upon her unfortunate son Christian, an FDNY probationary firefighter. And so do we. • “ Clearly, there are burning questions that need answers. Based on the incident's magnitude alone, a full-throttle, fully resourced, forensic investigation is imperative. It began with the appearance of your [SE Jones] article, last fall. I found the article just before class, and left it on my laptop so that when I plugged in the laptop projector, the students would see it. (I tried to make it look accidental.) Some were very interested, but I had a few violent responses… (e.g. "I'm extremely offended” and a few of the students acted as though they would ) turn me in to the Dean. I'm embarrassed to say that I backed down. • That was on a Friday (Veteran's Day). By Monday, I had my wagons in a circle and was ready to take on the Dean, if need be. I felt the topic of the WTC was totally appropriate to discuss in this class (Engineering Statics), and I could counter any logical argument against it. By the end of the semester, at least a third of the class was seriously questioning the official story. Also, I've been continually improving my techniques for approaching this topic in my classes, and it has become very rewarding. • Last Thursday, I introduced the topic to my Strength of Materials class for the first time, and about half of the class jumped in to the debate. The topic of the day was material properties and how heat affects the strength and stiffness of steel. How could I resist? "They could have tipped onto other buildings..." • “ The collapse of the WTC towers mirrored the strategy used by demolition experts. And another loud earth- shattering blast with a large fire ball which blew out more debris...” Det. Thomas M. Inman (pa-police-reports04.pdf page 6) WTC 2: “ When I looked in the direction of the Trade Center before it came down, before No. 2 came down, ..I saw low-level flashes. In my conversation with Lieutenant Evangelista, never mentioning this to him, he questioned me and asked me if I saw low-level flashes in front of the building, and I agreed with him because I thought -- at that time I didn't know what it was. I mean, it could have been as a result of the building collapsing, things exploding, but I saw a flash flash flash and then it looked like the building came down. • • • I saw a flash flash flash and then it looked like the building came down. • Q. Was that on the lower level of the building or up where the fire was? • A. No, the lower level of the building. You know like when they demolish a building, how when they blow up a building, when it falls down? That's what I thought I saw. And I didn't broach the topic to him, but he asked me. He said I don't know if I'm crazy, but I just wanted to ask you because you were standing right next to me… He said did you see any flashes? I said, yes, well, I thought it was just me. I have read your paper concerning the WTC towers collapse and agree; Military thermite [which contains sulfur as an accelerant] is the only explanation for the molten slag found weeks after the collapse. … thermite charges used in conjunction with small linear shaped charges could be used to drop the World Trade Center towers. Zadroga had developed black lung disease • • • NYFD Tim Keller died also… July 19, 2005 Dust from 9/11 World Trade Center Attack May Have Caused Permanent Lung Damage in Thousands What many people don't know, or haven't thought about, is that the massive cloud of dust that lingered in the air may have caused thousands of people to develop lung infections, or long-term or fatal lung diseases. The dust particles at Ground Zero were small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and become lodged causing permanent damage to the lungs. What's worse is what was in the dust - hundreds of tons of asbestos, mercury from tens of thousands of fluorescent light bulbs, and lead from over 50,000 computers. All of these toxic materials were released into the air when the 9/11 attack occurred. The thousands of bystanders and heroic rescuers breathed in this hazardous dust, many unaware of the long-term lung damage that would haunt them in the coming months and years after the 9/11 World Trade Center attack. [Particularly since the EPA declared the dust to be “ safe.” ] Tim Keller, a veteran NYC fire department medic, was one of the heroes. Not only was Keller one of the first rescuers on the scene, he also spent weeks at Ground Zero searching for 9/11 survivors. Previously undisclosed facts are still coming to light, due primarily to the investigation spear-headed by Congressman Curt Weldon (R-Pa), vice chairman of the House Armed Services and House Homeland Security committees. The fact that Administration officials know about Mohamed Atta and other 9/11 hijackers, long before 9/11, was disclosed publicly on the House floor by Rep. Weldon on June 27, 2005: • “ Speaker, I rise because information has come to my attention Mr. over the past several months that is very disturbing. This now looks to be embarrassingly wrong… Even the most junior investigator would immediately know that the name and photo ID of Atta in 2000 is precisely the kind of tactical intelligence the FBI has many times employed to prevent attacks and arrest terrorists. Yet the 9/11 Commission inexplicably concluded that it "was not historically significant." This astounding conclusion--in combination with the failure to investigate Able Danger and incorporate it into its findings--raises serious challenges to the commission's credibility and, if the facts prove out, might just render the commission historically insignificant itself. September 10, 2001: coincidences or foreknowledge? • Newsweek 9/24/01: “ Sept. 10, NEWSWEEK has learned, a group of top Pentagon On officials suddenly canceled travel plans for the next morning, apparently because of security concerns.” • On September 10, 2001, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld admitted at a press conference that over $2,000,000,000,000 in Pentagon funds could not be accounted for. Rumsfeld stated: "According to some estimates we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions." (CBS News, 1/29/01) Such a disclosure normally would have sparked a huge investigation. However, the 9/11 attacks the following day would assure that the $2.3-trillion loss would remain buried, all but forgotten. He testified that he went down to the Presidential Emergency Operations Center under the White House at about 9:20 on 9/11/01. Vice President Cheney was there and in charge. • “ During the time that the airplane was coming in to the Pentagon, there was a young man who would come in and say to the Vice President, "The plane is 50 miles out." "The plane is 30 miles out." And when it got down to "the plane is 10 miles out," the young man also said to the Vice President, "Do the orders still stand?" And the Vice President turned and whipped his neck around and said, "Of course the orders still stand. Have you WHERE ARE THE FLIGHT RECORDERS? Firefighter DeMasi reports: three flight recorders were found! • Nicholas DeMasi was a firefighter at Engine Company 261 in Queens. He reported: • "At one point I was assigned to take Federal Agents around the site to search for the black boxes from the planes. We were getting ready to go out. My ATV was parked at the top of the stairs at the Brooks Brothers entrance area. These folks are generally . marginalized, by labeling them “ conspiracy theorists”or “ extremists” . Still, half (49.3%) of New Yorkers now believe that 9-11 was planned or at least allowed by the Federal Government (Bush Administration) according to a Zogby poll, fall 2004. “ Conspiracy Theories” What, did the hijackers act Independently of each other, without coordination? Four independently-hijacked aircraft flying around America for nearly two hours? Of course not. So clearly there was a Conspiracy of some sort. The question remains: Who was involved, and why? A fully independent investigation is needed, with release of all data held back, including over 6,000 photographs and 300 hours of video tapes, samples of the molten metal found in the basements of WTC 1,2 and 7, flight recorders.
