AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR BLAGOJEVICH
ABOUT MEDICARE PRESCRIPTION DRUGS
Over the past two years, my administration has created several new programs like I-SaveRx and the
Rx Buying Club to ensure everyone has access to affordable prescriptions. And now with the new
Medicare drug benefit starting next year, Illinois is once again stepping up to make sure that Illinoisans
get the best drug benefits possible. I will also make sure that no senior or person with a disability gets
left behind as Medicare starts covering your prescription drug benefits.
Here’s how it will work. Next year, Medicare will begin to cover the prescription drugs you need
because you get Medicare health benefits.
Starting January 1, 2006, you can get Medicare prescription drug benefits.
You do not need to do anything now.
In November, you should enroll in a Medicare prescription drug plan.
You will not have to pay premiums and deductibles for your Medicare prescription drug benefits
because the state of Illinois pays your Medicare Part B premiums for you. You will only have to pay a
small co-payment for your prescriptions.
If you get SeniorCare or Circuit Breaker Pharmaceutical Assistance now, you must enroll for Medicare
prescription drug benefits beginning in November.
Watch your mail for more information about signing up for the new Medicare prescription drug
coverage. You may find it helpful to keep this letter and other information you get about Medicare drug
coverage in one place.
A new federal law called the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act (MMA)
of 2003 caused this change. If you have questions about Medicare prescription drugs, call
Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or visit the website www.medicare.gov.
The State of Illinois will also help. Call:
Senior Helpline: 1-800-252-8966 (voice and TTY); or
Senior Health Insurance Program: 1-800-548-9034 (TDD at 1-217-524-4872).
Together, we’ll make sure no one gets left behind and everyone gets the benefits they need.
