GUIDELINES FOR INDIVIDUAL CASE STUDY
EDUC 6254 Individualizing Instruction for Diverse Learners
For this assignment you are asked to develop a case study of a child/youth that would fit any of
the areas of differences that we have discussed in class. Your final product will consist of the
following:
a written case study report to include your personal reflections
Periodically, throughout the course of the semester, we will have ‘Open Forum’ discussions at the
beginning or ending of class. These dialog sessions are intended to provide you with an
opportunity to discuss your case and to receive valuable feedback and suggestions from your
colleagues in this course. Use the following sequence to guide you through the development of
your case study:
1. Select a student to be the focus of your case study. Your selection of a student should be
based on their diverse learning needs. The first section of your case study should provide
a ‘social history’ of your student(s). This profile needs to provide a complete description
of the student(s), his or her family background, school attendance record, discipline
record, medication, and any other pertinent information that would be helpful in planning
for the student(s).
*This section should also include ‘personal reflections’ that outline the questions you have at this
point regarding the student(s) you selected and a description of your plans for securing his or her
personal background information (how do you plan to collect information for his or her social
history).
2. The second section of your case study should clearly identify the social, behavioral,
and/or academic characteristics of the student(s) in terms of how the unique qualities
manifest within the classroom environment.
*This section should also include ‘personal reflections’ that outline any questions you may have
as a result of the information you have gathered regarding the student’s social history. Your
personal reflections should also include how you will determine which
interventions/modifications are appropriate and which would not be appropriate for your case.
3. The third section of your case study should clearly address the environmental,
instructional curricular, assessment, and collaborative considerations to be addressed.
This section should include a rationale and a description of the desired outcome for each
of the considerations that have been addressed in the case study.
*This section should also include ‘personal reflections’ that describe the student’s initial
reactions/responses to the interventions/modifications that were implemented. Include any
aspects of the interventions/modifications that were particularly successful, and any that, based
on your observations were not effective. Be very descriptive of your thinking, observed
behaviors/responses from the student(s), predictions, comments from other colleagues, etc.
4. The fourth section of your case study should clearly address your plans for monitoring
the progress of your student(s). This section should include examples of your assessment
(how you assessed) and of the student(s) work (final student product or performance).
*This section should also include ‘personal reflections’ that describe your thinking in
approaching:
Initiating an modifications/strategies
Discontinuing an modifications/strategies
Adding additional interventions/strategies
Seeking assistance from colleagues
Weaknesses of your plan
Strengths of your plan
Revision of your intervention plan(s) for future use with students
In your final written report you may include examples of charts, graphs, self-monitoring charts,
and student work samples. Your written report should be typed, double-spaced, using APA style
guidelines.
