ABSTRACT OF THE CALL FOR ADMISSION TO PH.D. SCHOOLS
ART. 1 - ESTABLISHMENT
Università Politecnica delle Marche announces the open competitions for the admission to the 14° (XXVIII)
cycle of the following Ph.D. Schools: Agriculture, Economics, Engineering, Medicine and Surgery and
Sciences. The official duration of all Ph.D. courses is three years (2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015).
The Director’s name, the courses, the number of available positions and the scholarships, the scientific
areas, the selection procedures, the date, the time, location and the topics of the exams are listed, for each
School, in Annex A.
Any possible change in the number of the scholarships listed in the Call, resulting from the implementation
of agreements for new scholarships or the non-implementation of the agreements referring to scholarships
already included in the Call, will be published on the University website http://www.univpm.it (Concorsi-
Concorsi vari- Dottorato di ricerca 14° ciclo) within the date of the exams for the admission to each School.
ART. 2 – REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be in possession of a “Laurea Specialistica” (Specialistic Degree), “Laurea Magistrale”
(Master Degree), a Degree pertaining to the old system or an equivalent title obtained abroad; candidates
who expect to receive their degree by 20th December 2012 are also admitted to the competition; in this case
the candidate will be admitted with reservation until he/she delivers a substitute declaration within 21st
December 2012, in conformity with art. 47 of Presidential Decree n° 445/2000.
Italian and foreign citizens who have a title that hasn’t already been declared equivalent to a Laurea
Specialistica/Magistrale or pertaining to the old system, must explicitly ask for evaluation of their title in the
application by enclosing the necessary documents, according to the procedure set up by the following art. 4.
Those who have attended a full Ph.D. course/School or have been awarded a PhD title at an italian
university can not enter the competition.
ART. 3 – EXTRA-EU CITIZENS
As an alternative to the ordinary rules for selection, by explicit request in the application, extra-
communitarian citizens can also apply for admission to the PhD Schools for extra places without scholarship.
In this case the admission is subject to the evaluation of the candidates’ curricula by the Evaluation
Committee. The number of extra places cannot exceed half the number of available positions, rounded to
unity by defect.
The candidates with dual citizenship, one of which Italian or EU, can not make use of this possibility.
The candidates must fill in the applications according to following art. 4.
The University awards n° 10 scholarships for the full duration of the School for extra-EU citizens applying
for extra places, coming from universities already collaborating with UNIVPM by means of formal
agreements, two of which are reserved for the candidates coming from universities belonging to the
ART. 4 – APPLICATIONS
Applications must be filled in on-line, according to the form annexed to this call (Annex C/1, Italian
text, and C/2, English text), by using, subject to exclusion, the procedure set up on the Internet site
http://www.univpm.it (Concorsi – Concorsi vari – Dottorato di ricerca 14° ciclo – English version), by
clicking “Fill in the on line application form”.
Candidates who have obtained the degree at this University can fill in the application by clicking on
“Percorso riservato ai Laureati/Laureandi dell’Università Politecnica delle Marche”, entering their
matriculation number and fiscal code. In this way data related to the academic career will be automatically
included in the application.
After entering the data on line, candidates must register the request by clicking on “Submit” and must print
the application form with all the attachments, sign it and make sure that all the documents are
properly received, subject to exclusion, no later than 12.00 p.m. on 15th September, 2012, at:

- hand delivery in person or by another person at “Ripartizione Dottorato di Ricerca” at the following
opening hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.; Wednesday: from
11.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 3.00 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.; on Saturday 15th September, 2012, from 8.00
a.m. to 12.00 p.m.
- fax transmission at n° 0039 071 220 2205;
- by mail or authorized delivery agencies; if documents are sent by mail, the date of arrival, not the
date of dispatch, is considered valid;
- by certified e-mail to email@example.com sent only from another certified e-mail; the application
submitted by not certified e-mail address will not be considered valid.

they intend to compete for. The choice made is irrevocable. Within each school candidates can compete for
a single curriculum; the choice of several curricula will lead to the exclusion from the selection.
Candidates wishing to compete for more than one school must submit as many application forms as the

evaluation by the Evaluation Committee; 3) Annex D/2 (English text) to this Call, filled in with the list of
the exams taken during the academic career with the relative marks, the list of qualifications, the list of any
publications; 4) copy of qualifications and copy of the publications.
Applicants for the PhD school of Economics must enclose a copy of the graduation thesis that will be
evaluated together with the other qualifications.
Applicants may personally (or through a person with a signed authorization) collect the documents
submitted for the entrance examination at “Ripartizione Dottorato di Ricerca” within 90 days after the end of
the competition procedures.
Within the same term, applicants may submit a written request (provided with a payment receipt of € 13,00
adressed to Università Politecnica delle Marche – UniCredit Banca di Roma S.p.A. – Piazza Roma 25 –
Ancona IBAN: IT95P0200802626000000600882) to ask for the return of their documents by mail.
After this period, this University is not obliged to return applicants’ documents.
Italian and foreign citizens, asking for the recognition by the School Committee of the equivalence of their
degree, must attach all the required documents to the application form ( degree certificate, list reporting all
the courses attended with their duration, list reporting all the exams taken and the respective marks)
translated and legalized by the appropriate Italian Embassies or Consulates, according to regulations in force
concerning the admission of foreign students in Italian Universities.
This University may at any time exclude applicants lacking admission requirements.
ART. 5 – VALUABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND ENTRANCE EXAMINATION
Selection for the admission to the PhD Schools is based on qualifications and examinations.
Marks attributed to qualifications:
- up to 40 points for the admission to the PhD Schools of Agriculture, Economics, Engineering, Medicine and
- up to 20 points for the admission to the PhD School of Sciences.
Evaluation of qualifications is prior to the interview, according to general criteria settled by the Evaluation
Committee. Evaluation results are published before the interview.

Marks attributed to interview:
- up to 60 points for the admission to the PhD Schools of Agriculture, Economics, Engineering, Medicine and
- up to 80 points for the admission to the PhD School of Sciences.
In compliance with art. 7 of the Presidential Decree dtd 09.05.1994, n. 487, the Evaluation Committee may
establish a minimum passing mark for the interview.
Examinations timetable, indicating locations, dates and time of the examinations, is available on “Attachment
A” of this Call. This is a public notification. Applicants will not receive any further communication.
Examinations, unless different indications given by the Directors of the PhD Schools and specified in “Annex
A”, are meant to measure the candidates’ qualification, cultural background, attitude towards research and
knowledge of at least a foreign language.
Candidates are requested to show a valid identity document at the interview. Candidates who do not present
themselves at the examinations are excluded from the competition.
By explicit request enclosed with the application form, applicants residing abroad may do an online
interview, by means of a workstation situated in an affiliated University or a diplomatic quarter. Candidates
must give suitable guarantee about their identity.
ART. 6 – EVALUATION COMMITTEE
An Evaluation Committee will be appointed for each Ph.D School in compliance with the University Rules.
ART. 7 – PHD SCHOOL ADMISSION
Once the examinations are over, the Rector, by decree, approves the final lists prepared by the Evaluation
Committees of each Ph.D School and then allocates positions and scholarships for each curriculum,
according to the lists and to the agreements with private or public bodies financing or co-financing the

Successful candidates must submit the enrolment form by one of the means cited in art. 4 of this Call within
2.00 pm on 12th October 2012. The enrolment form must be drawn up according to art. 8 of this Call and
addressed to: “Università Politecnica delle Marche - Ripartizione Dottorato di ricerca – Via
Oberdan n. 8 - 60121 Ancona”. Failure to comply with the deadline entails exclusion from the
Enrolment forms received after the deadline are not taken in consideration, regardless of the
date of dispatch.
The list of vacant positions for PhD courses will be published on the University website within 17 th October
The eligible candidates who want to apply for the vacant positions must show up at the above-mentioned
address on 22th October 2012 at 10.00 am, to proceed with the enrolment procedure, according to the
order established by the lists and to art. 8 of this Call.
Eligible candidates for vacant positions in different lists must choose one PhD School within the enrolment
Successful candidates who do not confirm their choice within enrolment deadline will be considered as
renouncing their positions. Candidates who made false declarations are excluded.
In case of a winner’s withdrawal within one month from the beginning of the PhD course, the position can
be awarded to the applicant coming next in the ranking list of successful candidates.

ART. 8 – ENROLMENT FORM
Winners of the selection procedure must submit the enrolment form, by filling in the appropriate form
available at http://www.univpm.it/, ( Concorsi – Concorsi vari - Dottorato di ricerca 14° ciclo – English

n.1 picture, size cm 4 x 4,5, signed on the back;
declaration about external activities;
reserved for sholarship-holders:
- terms of payment of the scholarship and national insurance contributions form;
- substitute declaration of residence and domicile in Regione Marche (Eureka Project scholarship-
holders only), and substitute declaration of employment\unemployment condition;
● reserved for non scholarship-holders:
- receipt of payment of € 412,00, (of which € 287,38 as 1° tuition and fee installment, € 103,00 as
Regional tax for the right to study, € 7,00 as insurance, € 14,62 as virtual stamp duty) addressed to
"Università Politecnica delle Marche”, IBAN code IT95P0200802626000000600882, reason of
payment “ 1° tuition and fee installment, PhD School of…………………..- Curriculum………….. + taxes”;
Reserved for graduated in a foreign University in addition to the documentation already
attached to the application form (with the exception provided for specific Countries)
- copy of the master degree accompanied by translation, legalizion and “Dichiarazione di valore” issued
by Italian Embassies or Consulates abroad.

ART. 9 – SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships, amounting to € 13.638,47 per year including social security charges paid by students, are
awarded after comparative assessment of merit and according to the marking scale made by the Evaluation
Ph.D. scholarships can not be combined with research grants or with other scholarships conferred in any
way, except for those awarded by national or foreign Institutions to integrate the research activity of the
The payment of the scholarship is made in monthly installments.
Those who have been awarded a doctoral scholarship may not apply for such benefit again, even in case of
partial fruition, with the exception of different and justified evaluation of the academic bodies according to
the specific case and however with deduction of the share enjoyed.
ART. 10 – CONTRIBUTION FOR ACCESS AND ATTENDANCE OF THE SCHOOL
The Ph.D. students without a scholarship are required to pay, for the academic year 2012/13, the total
amount of € 1.013,00, including € 888,38 as a contribution for access and attendance of the school, €
103,00 as regional tax for the right to higher education, € 7,00 for insurance policy against accidents, €
14,62 for the virtual stamp affixed on the enrollment form; the above mentioned amount shall be paid in the
- 1st installment: € 412,00 (at the time of enrollment);
- 2nd installment: € 601,00 (by 31st May 2013).
In case of delayed payment a penalty of € 50,00 will be applied.

Holders of Ph.D. scholarships, or other scholarships expressly providing for exoneration, are exempt from
payment of € 888,38 as a contribution for access and attendance of the school.
Those who are exempt from taxes and contributions, because in possession of specific requirements, status
and/or conditions as well as extra-EU citizens enrolled within the extra places, must pay only € 124,62,
(including € 103,00 as regional tax for the right to higher education, € 7,00 for insurance policy against
accidents, € 14,62 for the virtual stamp affixed on the enrolment form).
These contributions will be given back to the student abandoning the course before it starts.
ART. 11 – PH.D. STUDENT STATUS
Ph.D. Students have the status of university students.
They are required to attend the Ph.D. School and to carry out study and research activities within the
facilities assigned for that purpose, according to the procedures established by the Board of the School.
By the end of each year, they are required to submit to the Board of the School an activity report and, at
the end of the course, the doctoral thesis.
Candidates are not allowed to enrol to a Ph.D Course and, at the same time, to another university course
among those provided for in the Miniterial Decree n. 270 dtd 22nd October 2004 and similars.
For the whole duration of the course, it is forbidden to work with an open-ended contract.
ART. 12 – ATTAINMENT OF THE DOCTORAL DEGREE
The doctoral degree (“Dott. Ric.” or “Ph.D”) is awarded at the end of the course by the Rector after passing
the final exam, which may be repeated once only.

ART. 15 –HANDLING OF PERSONAL DATA
Personal data provided by candidates are collected by Università Politecnica delle Marche for the purposes of
management of the competition; they are processed by a computerized archive even after the registration
for the purposes related to the management of university careers.
