UNIVERSITY OF DENVER
Graduate School of Professional Psychology Internship Consortium

Friday Seminars 2011 - 2012
Seminars will be held in the Ammi Hyde Building, Room 112, and at the various sites in
the Consortium, as well as elsewhere (see schedule below – unless specified, meet in
AHB 112). Seminars are designed to build on the coursework taken previously by all
interns in the GSPP doctoral program.

Research Seminar
Research Seminar is co-led by Drs. Jenny Cornish, Lavita Nadkarni, and Shelly-Smith-
Acuña (GSPP faculty members), is generally held two hours every other week
(alternating with Professional Issus Seminar) and emphasizes support for doctoral papers
as well as a yearly group project. Recent group projects have included papers published
in the Psychotherapy Bulletin (on topics such as supervision during internship,
completing doctoral papers on time, and student loan debt repayment options).

Professional Issues Seminar
This seminar is coordinated by Dr. Jenny Cornish (Internship Consortium Director) and
generally meets for two hours every other week (alternating with Research Seminar).
The seminar is led by a variety of speakers from the GSPP, the Consortium sites, and
other local and national psychologists. Topics covered include: the work conducted at
the Consortium sites, licensure, job-search strategies, supervision, and so on.

Multicultural Seminar
This seminar augments the four-course multicultural sequence completed by all interns in
the PsyD program at the DU GSPP. This weekly seminar, co-led by Drs. Fernand
Lubuguin (DU GSPP faculty member) and Vivian Schaefer (independent practice,
Denver), utilizes didactic and experiential pedagogy to increase the awareness,
knowledge and skills related to the Individual and Cultural Diversity competence. The
seminar includes: a) didactic discussions regarding aspects of diversity that are not
addressed or inadequately addressed in the GSPP curriculum (e.g., reading and discussing
literature regarding sizism); b) exploring aspects of diversity that have been addressed in
the curriculum to greater depth; c) personal discussions regarding particular aspects of
diversity (e.g., spiritual/religious beliefs and how they affect clinical work); d) case
consultation regarding diversity issues; e) personal target/non-target journeys; and f)
processing unresolved circumstances and feelings regarding diversity that have occurred
within GSPP. The schedule below provides the general structure of the seminar for the
year. However, the focus and nature of any given week will be subject to change,
depending on the immediate training needs and interests expressed by the interns (e.g., in
2010 – 2011 the intern cohort had a particular interest in religion and spirituality and
spent several weeks on those topics).

Assessment Seminar
Assessment Seminar is held one hour every week and includes training in clinical
interviewing and all aspects of psychological testing (e.g., administration, scoring,
interpretation, and written and oral reports). This seminar is co-led by Drs. Kim Gorgens
and Michael Karson (GSPP faculty) and may include expert guest speakers from the
community. Interns are required to present at least two assessment cases in seminar; there
                                                                            7/26/11 2

may be options to present more cases depending on the year. Drs. Gorgens, Karson, and
Nicoletti (from the Nicoletti-Flater Associates site) will also present cases.

Intern Lunch
Intern Lunch is held one hour each week. The interns meet with each other for lunch and
bonding purposes.

Participation:
Interns are expected to participate in all seminars and workshops listed below. If interns
need to miss a seminar day, they should notify the internship director and all seminar
leaders in advance if possible (and remember to complete a leave form, signed by the
primary supervisor, with a copy to the internship director), and if they are scheduled to
present on that day, they are expected to arrange a trade with a peer and to let the seminar
leaders know about the trade.

Evaluation
The leader/s of Friday Seminars provide narrative assessment of the interns to the
internship director on a quarterly basis, who in turn, contacts the site liaisons with that
feedback. Site supervisors use this information in completing the written evaluation
forms. If an intern is demonstrating difficulty in a seminar, site liaisons/site supervisors
will be contacted on a more frequent, as-needed basis. In general, interns are evaluated
on their individual contributions to seminars, including their contributions to discussion
and their preparation for any presentations. Note that no information is given to the
internship director and site liaisons/supervisors about Multicultural Seminar other than
whether the intern attended and participated, in order to safeguard the confidentiality
necessary for that seminar.

Note:
The schedule below will be updated as needed based on input by seminar leader/s and
interns based on their professional needs.
