Case Conceptualization Exercise
Description: The Case Conceptualization Exercise is a structured
exercise that supervisors may use to help therapists
learn how to conceptualize cases within a systems-
ecological perspective. The therapist uses the
structured outline to answer questions about a
current MST case.
Processes: Prior to teaching the supervisor to use the Case
Conceptualization Exercise with therapists, the
consultant or system supervisor collaborates with his
or her coach or Manager of Network Partnerships
(MNP) to practice applying the steps in these
instructions to an MST case. He or she selects an
MST case and provides a copy of the necessary
paperwork to the coach or MNP. Both parties apply
the steps in the instructions to the selected case
then compare answers. The preparation process may
be completed jointly or independently.
Once the benchmark has been achieved by the
consultant or system supervisor, he or she assists
the supervisor in applying the exercise with
therapists who are struggling with MST case
conceptualization. Once the supervisor is familiar
with how to use the document, he or she may use
the form independently or may collaborate with the
consultant or system supervisor in assisting
therapists with case conceptualization.
Performance Benchmarks:
Consultants and system supervisors: The
consultant or system supervisor demonstrates an
ability to conceptualize cases from a systems-
ecological perspective as evidenced by 85%
convergence on case conceptualization between the
consultant or system supervisor and the coach on
MNP.
Supervisors: The supervisor demonstrates an
ability to conceptualize cases from a systems-
ecological perspective as evidenced by 85%
convergence on case conceptualization between the
supervisor and the consultant or system supervisor.
Therapists: The therapist demonstrates an ability to
conceptualize cases from a systems-ecological
perspective as evidenced by 85% convergence on
case conceptualization between the therapist and the
supervisor.
