Reading- We will be reading “Satchmo’s Blues” by Alan Schroeder. The genre is informational narrative.
Young Louis Armstrong longs to play a horn, but his family has no money for such things. So he decides to
earn money himself. The skill will be fact and opinion. A fact is information that you can prove to be true or
false. An opinion expresses a thought or a feeling about something, and you cannot prove it to be right or
wrong. A supported inference is a conclusion that you draw based on factual evidence. The vocabulary words
this week are: errands, produce, pawnshop, gravelly, numerous, and international. There are flashcards at
the top of this page to help learn these vocabulary words. Your child will do several activity sheets to practice
the skills this week. We will have a reading test on the story and vocabulary words on Friday. A great website
is: http://www.harcourtschool.com/menus/trophies/activities/reading_skills/gr5.html. Click on the title of this
week’s story. This site will help your child practice their skills and comprehension for this story.

Produce
Vegetables and fruits grown for sale
Pawnshop
A place where personal goods are exchanged for money

Spelling- We will be studying words with prefixes ‘re’ and ‘inter’. The words are as follows: remove,
interview, repeat, interrupt, respect, interfere, represent, relocate, international, review, interpret,
interstate, remarkable, intermediate, intersection, recommend, interject, intervene, resource, and
remained. The challenge words are: interdependent, interconnect, recognize, reassure, and recede. We
will have a pretest on Monday. Your child will be tested only on the words they miss on their pretest on Friday.
We will have a worksheet for homework-Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Grammar- We will be studying adjectives again this week. An adjective describes a noun or a pronoun. Your
child will have several worksheets that they will use to practice these skills during class. A great website to
help practice these sentences is:
