Maintenance Craftsperson – Joiner, Band 4
Salary Scale: £18,652 - £21,798 per annum
A Maintenance Craftsperson – Joiner is required to join our team within NHS Tayside, Angus
Division and will be based at Arbroath Infirmary.
The minimum education/training requirements for the post are a recognised Joinery
Apprenticeship, City & Guilds Qualification, SVQ/NVQ Certificates or equivalent approved
qualification and experience.
The main duties of the post will be to carry out maintenance joinery work and repair faults to
building fabric and fixtures, and minor alteration works within the Angus area properties.
You will be required to achieve the mandatory Induction standards for Healthcare Support
Workers in Scotland and to comply with the Code of Conduct throughout your

2. JOB PURPOSE
The Post Holder is employed as a fully trained Joiner to provide Joinery Services to meet the needs of
To Install, Repair and Maintain Building Structures and Fixtures within all Properties of the
Organisation in order that they can carry out their intended purpose safely, and to contribute to the
maintenance of the Building Fabric within the Organisation.
The Postholder is based at Arbroath Infirmary and may be required to work at any NHS Tayside
Property as and when necessary.

4. SCOPE AND RANGE (EXAMPLES)
To perform work including activities that may be demanding and/or non-routine.
Responsible for Repair and Maintenance of Structures and Fixtures (Fire Doors, Door Closers, Handles,
Hinges, Locks, Slip Bolts, Storm Damaged Doors and Windows, Ceiling Tiles, Window Vents, Broken
Windows, Wall Damage, Window and Bed Screen Curtain Tracks).
Responsible for manufacture of replacement timber doors, window frames etc. and alteration works to
joinery structures and fixtures as instructed and to given specifications.
On occasion the postholder may be called out if available to carry out emergency repairs in support of
the duty on call tradesman.
Order stock materials, spare parts etc. through Maintenance Supervisor, and collect same from

5. MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Induction Standards & Code of Conduct
Your performance must comply with the national “Mandatory Induction Standards for Healthcare
Support Workers” 2009; and with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers.
To work in accordance with the PUWER 1992 Regulations (Provision and use of work equipment).
To work in hazardous areas taking all safety measures to prevent danger, avoid injury, and prevent
damage to equipment.
To participate in the operation and control of building planned maintenance schemes and the
management control system (Job Dockets, Timesheets).
To undertake essential repair work and general maintenance activities on structures and fittings
under the instruction of the Maintenance Supervisor and advising on materials required.
To liaise with the Maintenance Supervisor regarding plant or equipment failures and to request
supply of goods and/or services as necessary.
To carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing in accordance with agreed
procedures and relevant Health Technical Manuals (HTM`s).
To complete all report sheets, and Log Books as necessary.
To undertake Testing and General Inspections of Woodworking Machinery.
To follow detailed building drawings and manufacturers specifications with reference to the
Maintenance Supervisor and/or Estates Officers when necessary.
To use all relevant tools and equipment within safety guidelines as necessary for the completion of

7. KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB
Recognized and registered CITB (or equivalent) craft apprenticeship and City and Guilds S85
Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery.
Or PUWER 1998 + Code of Practice (Woodworking ACOP)
Or Equivalent Approved Qualification
Or in special circumstances equivalent experience and training which will be appropriate to satisfy
the necessary academic standards required.
A valid current driving licence is essential as the post involves driving between the various sites,
using NHS Tayside vehicles.
Knowledge of PUWER 1992 Regulations (Provision and use of work equipment).
Workshop Woodcutting Machinery, Hand Power Tools (or be willing to undertake training).
Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (or be willing to undertake training).
Training in Lifting and Handling, First Aid, Asbestos Awareness, Confined Spaces, Restraint
Systems, Scaffolding Erection, and Safety at Work (or be willing to undertake training).
To attend training establishments/on the job training as necessary.
To have knowledge of own trade to a high level of skill that will enable them to deliver a constant

Conditions of Service The terms and conditions of service for this post are those
determined by the NHS Staff Council.
Remuneration The current salary scale for the post is £18,652 to £21,798 (pro rata
for part-time staff). Placing on the scale on appointment is normally
at the minimum but may be higher subject to verification of previous
