Carolina Alliance Names J. Barry Mason to Staff
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (SEPTEMBER 9, 2010) Carolina Alliance Bank (OTCBB: CRLN.OB)
today announced that veteran Spartanburg banker J. Barry Mason has joined its staff as executive
vice president and commercial banking officer, effective immediately.
Mason brings more than 28 years of banking experience in the Spartanburg market to Carolina
Alliance, with the most recent being as president and chief executive officer of First National
Bank of the South, which was recently acquired by new owners.
“Barry’s diverse and proven experience in this market make him uniquely positioned to help
Carolina Alliance as we continue to grow,” said John Poole, president and chief executive officer
of Carolina Alliance. “Barry will be a strong addition to our team. Like everyone at Carolina
Alliance, Barry places a value on outstanding customer service, strengthening customer
relationships and growing our business.”
Mason’s banking experience is centered in the Upstate market, primarily in management,
administration and commercial lending. Having worked in a leadership capacity with four banks,
he was part of an executive team at Arthur State Bank that helped grow the company from $88
million in assets, $25 million in loans outstanding, and four branches in 1995 to $660 million in
assets, a $548 million loan portfolio, and 23 branches in 2009. A member of the Board of
Directors of Arthur State, Mason came to Arthur State from American Federal Bank, where he
was vice president/northern group commercial loan manager. Mason began his banking career as
a branch manager and commercial loan officer for Citizens and Southern National Bank of South
Carolina. He is a graduate of the C&S National Bank’s Advanced Commercial Credit/Lending
School for executives in leadership lending roles.

A native of Spartanburg, Mason, received his B.A. degree in economics and was a four-year
letterman in football at Wofford College. He is an active member of the Spartanburg community
and is a member of the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Governors.
