What is an Archetype?

Model

 things of the same type are
 representations or copies (Webster’s 9th
 Collegiate)
Ways of describing
Archetypes

Goals: This is the hero quest which the
 archetype has set out on. The hero may
 not realize she is on such a quest until it
 is too late to retreat.
Dragon: In most quests the hero soon
 meets her dragon. This represents the
 major problem or obstacle of the quest --
 the opposition that must be overcome in
 order for the quest to be successful.

Fear: What is it that each archetype
 fears?
Best Traits: The archetype can have
 positive qualities that make him or her a
 “Good” person.
Worst Traits: The archetype is not always
 good. There are negative aspects to the
 archetype.
Innocent

Goal: Remain in
 safety.
Fears:
 Abandonment
Dragon: Deny or
 seek rescue

Best: Trust, optimism
Worst: Extreme denial

Innocent

Innocent is the pre-fallen person who
 lives or tries to live in Eden.
Orphan

The Orphan has the same wish as the
 Innocent - to live in a safe world. But, the
 Orphan must return there.
Wanderer

The Wanderer looks for external and
 internal realities and is willing to give up
 security and community for autonomy.
Lover

Lovers find out who they are by who and
 what they love.
Motivation comes from relationships,
 attachments, passion and commitment...
Love gives meaning to work and life.
Warrior

The Warriors defeat the villain and
 rescues the victim.
Are courageous and disciplined imposing
 high standards on themselves
Caregiver

Caregivers take care of others even when
 doing so requires sacrifice.
Magician

create new realities, change old ones
serve as a catalyst for change. (Arts)
Ruler

The ruler understands that we are
 responsible for our own lives and helps
 people to fill their roles.
Sage

Motivated by their understanding of the
 “big picture” so that they can detach and
 let go of anything small or transient
Jester

Lightens us up by finding clever ways
 around obstacles (intellectual and
 physical)
Finds freedom through unconventionality
 and a capacity to enjoy every moment.
