Beware! The traveler
John 13:21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily,
I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
25 He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
Mathew 26:25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I?
2 Samuel 12:1 And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him,
There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.
2 The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds:
3 But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up:
and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his
own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.
4 And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own
herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man's lamb, and
dressed it for the man that was come to him.
( note: the traveler went from being a traveler to a guest to a master in the home/heart?)
5 And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth,
the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:
6 And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity. 7
And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man.
Betrayal! My what an ugly word, what a thing to go through. It’s worse than rejection!
What pain it must be. How sad to be betrayed! What’s even more sad is to be the betrayer and
not even be aware of it? Is it possible to be so caught up in our sin, our self, our greed that we
cannot see that we are being set up to be the betrayed or the betrayer?
Read Matt.26: vs. 25 again, do you really think Judas was that dumb? that blind? or was he just
playing it off, pretending, or was he really that unaware that he was about to betray the Lord of
Then there was King David, wow what a character, what a man, Did God say a man after God’s
own heart? Even after this terrible event, even after his own lack of pity and mercy he would in
time find mercy. vs. 6, could it have been that due to his unconfessed sin with Bathsheba, that
inside David, was a raging anger, emptiness, and misery and since he had yet to repent and seek
Thus not knowing the feeling of being forgiven he was likewise unmerciful to others.
Remember when he defeated the Ammonites to add insult to injury he sent his soldiers into the
surrounding villages and had the men woman and children brutally slaughtered.
Beware Unconfess sin will rob you of the spirit of mercy and compassion.
Why did David fall into a Sin like this? where did he go wrong?
Notice the bible said vs. 1 at the time when kings went out to battle David stayed at the
palace. In the process, he made some very bad choices. Lets look at some of them.
1. He listened to the voice of the people over the voice of God.
Remember it was the people who told him to stay home instead of doing what
God had appointed him to do, which was to lead his people in battle, praise and
worship by example NOT BY NEGLECT.
When we neglect our spiritual and physical duties and obligations.
We invite temptation to entertain us and eventually defeat us.
2. Another point to consider, Notice David was basking in the victory over his
enemies. He felt undefeatable on all fronts thus he let his guard down.
Realize he had literally destroyed all the Ammonite and Philistine enemy around
Or rather that his soldiers had, and it was David that was glorying in this victory
and relaxing in the comfort of his palace while others were fighting his battles.
He had the external victory on the foothills of Palastine, but the enemy defeated
him internally, on the foothold of the flesh.
The lesson here is that we cannot live off others victories, and that the battle is
not so much externally as it is internally.
3. He invited the traveler (sin) in and when he did, in the end he ended up
betraying his God.
He was so blind to what he did that when Nathan brought it to his attention
he didn’t even know it was him, whom Nathan was speaking about?
Is it I Lord?
Did anybody notice that this traveler which represents sin came to David
1st as a traveler
2nd it became a guest
3rd it became a master of his home and heart.
The traveler went from traveler to guest to master progressively.
AND THAT IS THE NATURE AND DECIETFULNESS OF SIN!
That’s how sin is first it comes as a wayward traveler with no appearance of
harm or evil, then it becomes a guest as you invite it in, next it takes advantage
of you and becomes your master, till it destroys you.
Now that’s betrayal! People betray the Lord daily some do it out of arrogance
some out of ignorance. Watch out for the traveler! Just who is the traveler?
Who is the entertainer? Who is the betrayer? They have many names,
Is it I Lord”
There is a traveler named adultery & divorce:
Beware he comes hidden & enticing, Just a little dirty thought here and a
forbidden view there.
A little touch here and a no no there. Yeah to some they say its nothing just a
non threatening fling here and there, just a little extra love on the side it doesn’t
mean anything. Ah but Its betrayal in its lowliest form..
There is a traveler named alcoholism and drug abuse:
Beware he comes easy and subtly just a little drink here and a little toke there.
But he’s been known to destroy lives, wreck homes, and divide families.
He masquerades as an easy going simple social kind of thing.
But beware of that next drink it just might cost you more than you think!
He encourages you to try to drink your problems away rather than pray your
There is a traveler named pornography and promiscuity:
Beware he comes offering what cannot satisfy, what only destroys, he comes
hiding his true intent, just a simple look here and a dirty book there.
Yeah it starts with a quick glance at something, somewhere, OR SOMEONE my
eyes have no right to view be it a person, T.V, internet, cable or magazines,
followed by a lingering thought of a forbidden desire I have no right to entertain.
Yeah some say this traveler saids that this sin has no consequences NO cost,
its a victimless sin, it hurts no one, beware there indeed is a cost.
Beware it starts by giving in to your fleshly desires rather than your divine
There is a traveler named fame, fortune and lust:
This one, he offers to fill you with glory and power but only leaves you full of
greed and poverty.
He offers you the glamour/glitter of life but leaves you in the gutter of lies.
Beware true satisfaction is not found in ones possessions but in ones
1 Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing
8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish
and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after,
they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many
Beware this character usually comes to a place only after his friends, greed,
envy and ungratefulness have been there
There is a traveler named lying:
Beware he comes disguised in humility and wearing garments of exaggeration,
a little lie here and a big lie later there. He convinces you its alright to stretch the
truth just a little bit. He saids as long as your motive is to save and comfort
others its ok to miss lead to deceive and to lie.
But beware he’s the father of lies.
There is a traveler named apathy & unconcern, burdenlessness &
Yeah it starts with and by missing a service here and a late service there.
A little less prayer here and a little less giving there.
A little less bible here and a little less worship there.
Beware the cost is more than You can bare! The cost is more than you can pay,
matter a fact the cost is more than likely, what you won’t pay?
Why? Cause most likely the one’s who will pay for your unconcern and
prayerlessness, will be the lost souls who may never get saved! May very well
be your family?
“ Jude 1: 21- Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus
Christ unto eternal life. 22 And of some have compassion, making a difference: 23 others
save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
There is a traveler named doubt and deceit:
Some of us don’t think to doubt is sinful? to doubt is to lose out! To doubt is to
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God
must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Beware! This character likes to get you to look at the circumstances around
To listen to the unbelievers around you, to see the difficulties instead of the
opportunities, to see wants instead of needs, to expect misery rather than
miracles. He likes you to remember your past rather then realize your future!
There is a traveler named pride! Beware sometimes he comes arrogantly other times he comes
subtly, but he always lies. He tells you no matter what condition your in, no matter what shape
your in, no matter what circumstance, what situation, what position you find yourself in he tells
you, you deserve better!
You deserve more! Pride saids how dare them treat me like that! While humility saids how
dare I treat them like that.
Pride convinces you that your better than others, more intelligent than others.
Rom 12:3 For I say, through grace given unto me, to every man among you, not to think of himself
more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the
measure of faith.
Prov 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
CLOSE: But humility on the other hand gets Gods attention and lifts us out of our defeat and
God says whatever condition, situation or circumstance you find yourself in, you can overcome!
You can conquer and live contently, by faith!
For it is in your daily struggles and trials that you glorify and magnify your measure of faith and
Pride says that the way up is to lower others, but humility says the way up is by lifting others up.
Ah but finally there is a traveler you need not fear! There is a traveler named Mercy!
He’s here today. He’d like to hitch a ride with someone today, can and will you give him a lift?
some of you been avoiding him.
