Warm-Up
• Describe the differences between a
plant and animal cell using a Venn
Diagram
Different Types of Cells
How many cells?
• Some organisms have many cells
(multicellular)
• Some organisms are only one cell
(unicellular)
• There are two different types of cells:
– Prokaryotes
– Eukaryotes (Plant or Animal)
Prokaryotes
• Are the simplest cells
– Have no nucleus or internal compartments
Examples…
• Bacteria
– Flagella- enables movement long extensions
– Cillia- short hair-like extensions
Examples:
Extreamophiles
• Thermophiles- love heat
– 160 degrees Fahrenheit
• Halophiles- love salt
Eukaryotic Cells
• Cells with a nucleus and other internal
compartments
Examples:
• Most organisms are made up of
eukaryotic cells
• Yeast and Algae
Prokaryotes vs. Eurkaryotes
Prokaryotes Eukaryotes
Do not have a nucleus Contain DNA within a
(DNA exists in Nucleus
cytoplasm)
Smaller Larger
More simplistic (no Complex (membrane-
membrane-bound bound organelles)
organelles)
Plant vs. Animal Cells
• Both Eukaryotic
Plant Animal
Contains a cell wall No cell wall
Contains No chloroplasts
Chloroplasts
Large Central Very small (minute)
Vacuole vacuole
