Strong Demand Growth Expected to be Led by Asia-Pacific
The Asia-Pacific region, including fast-developing countries such as China, has rapidly emerged as a global
petrochemical products manufacturing hub over the past decade and Asia-Pacific is now the largest market
for polymers with electrical and electronic applications. Production in developing economies enjoys the
advantage of relatively low operating costs, which encourages industries to install new plants in these
countries. The usage of traditional polymers, such as polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene and polyethylene in
regular encapsulation and insulation, is expected to increase in developing countries due to improvements
in living standards in the Asia-Pacific region.
The innovation-driven developed regions of Europe and North America are also expected to grow in future,
expanding due to newer applications. However, the growth in these developed regions is expected to
remain lower than the expected growth in the Asia-Pacific region. Therefore, the market shares of the
developed regions of Europe and North America are expected to decline due to the higher growth in Asia-
Pacific.

New polymer applications such as printing electronics are creating opportunities for polymers in the

depends on the effectiveness of polymers and their acceptability in the market. There hasn’t been much

Developed Countries are Focusing More on Innovation to Gain additional Market Share
Developed countries in Europe and the Middle East are focusing on innovation and new polymer
applications in the electrical and electronics industry. The governments in these developed countries are
also supporting new applications for polymers in electrical and electronic applications. In recent years, the
UK government has invested hundreds of millions of pounds on the development of facilities for Organic
Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) and printing electronics. The major companies in these markets are also
investing more on innovation.
Manufacturers and governments in developed countries understand that developing countries have
significant cost advantages. Competing with these developing countries in traditional polymers is not an
easy way to gain a market share due to the large population base, low per capita consumption and low
labor costs. Therefore, companies are investing in innovative applications to increase the usage of polymers
for electrical and electronic applications.
