Welcome!
On behalf of the entire Orientation Committee, I would like to take this
opportunity to congratulate you on your acceptance to SUNY Upstate Medical
University . I hope that you will find the orientation program we are planning for
you to be a beneficial transition to life at SUNY Upstate!
Orientation 2011 begins with Orientation Check-In on Thursday, August 25 and
will run through Sunday, August 28 . Classes begin on Monday, August 29 . During
this time we will orient you to academic and social life at SUNY Upstate Medical
University, provide an opportunity for you to meet new colleagues and faculty and
offer you the opportunity to participate in a number of exciting activities!
I’d encourage you to review all the materials closely and if you should have any

August New Student Orientation Program
The August New Student Orientation Program is mandatory for all
incoming students who did not attend the June program. You must check in
by noon on Thursday,August 25 or confirm other arrangements with Chuck
Simpson in the Office of Campus Activities. College of Medicine students
must check in by 2:00pm onWednesday,August 24. Failure to do so will
result in your being administratively dropped from all of your coursework
and you will not be able to attend Upstate Medical University.
The following is the current schedule for this fall’s New Student Orientation program .
Upon arriving at campus, please pick up the OrientationWelcome
Booklet which will have the most up-to-date schedule listing program
times and locations. If you have any questions, please contact Chuck Simpson in
the Office of Campus Activities .
Students enrolled in the MPH program should refer to the orientation schedule
sent by the MPH program administrator for Friday, August 26 sessions .

Orientation Check-In
(Mandatory Attendance)
Date: Thursday, August 25
Time: 10:00am - noon

This should be one of the first things you do as part of the New Student
Orientation Program! Here you will check in and receive information regarding
the orientation program, you will confirm your online academic registration and
complete a number of required business items . Orientation Advisors and staff
from the Division of Student Affairs will be on hand to assist you through this
process and answer any questions you may have .
IMPORTANT: All required health forms must be completed and be on
file with the Student Health Office . State law allows no exception to this
requirement .
Student Health
The Student Health office is located on the 4th floor of Jacobsen Hall . The
services available are described in detail in the Student Health booklet that you
will receive at the time of your health clearance . Student Health does not cover
hospitalization, x-ray, or laboratory expenses . Health insurance coverage is
mandatory for all matriculated students .
You will receive a letter explaining the health clearance requirements . The
required forms are available on the Student Health website at www.upstate.edu/
currentstudents/health/clearance.php. If you are unable to access our website or
need the forms mailed to you, please contact Student Health directly by phone
or by e-mail at the contact numbers on the next page . All completed forms must
be on file in Student Health prior to arriving on campus for Orientation . There
are no exceptions to this requirement.
Fully completed forms should be mailed to Student Health, Upstate Medical
University, Jacobsen Hall, 4th floor, 750 East Adams St ., Syracuse, NY 13210 .
Forms must be submitted no later than Thursday, July 15, 2011. This
will allow sufficient time to address any incomplete medical information for
health clearance before registration . Questions related to medical clearance may

be directed to Lori Brooks-Singleton, Student Health Secretary, at (315) 464-
5470 (e-mail: brooksl@upstate.edu) or Jane Bennett, Employee/Student Health
Administrator, at (315) 464-4260 (email: bennetja@upstate.edu) .
As part of the registration process, all entering students must have a tuberculin
skin test (PPD) . Unless there is documentation of a previous positive test, the PPD
will be placed by the Employee/Student Health staff at Orientation . Please refer
to the Orientation program schedule for
information/times for PPD placement and
read . Failure to complete the above will delay
your registration and may result in a Late
Registration Fee ($40) and/or Late Payment
Fee ($50) being charged . Tuberculin skin tests
may be scheduled in advance of these dates
through contact with the Employee/Student
Health Department at (315) 464-5470 .
Books and Supplies
Follett Higher Education Group operates a branch bookstore at Upstate Medical
University . Details concerning books and supplies required by the faculty may be
obtained directly from the bookstore which is located in the Campus Activities
Building . Laura Stolp is the Bookstore Manager and she may be reached by phone
at (315) 464-5560 or by email at bookstore@upstate.edu . An estimated annual cost
of textbooks, uniforms, and supplies by college and/or program is as follows:

Financial Aid
There’s still time to apply for Financial Aid
if you haven’t done so . Complete the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid on-line at
www.fafsa.ed.gov, or contact the Financial Aid
Office for an application packet .
If you applied for financial aid, and your
application was completed by April 1, you should
have received a financial aid eligibility letter
in early May . After that, applications will be
processed as completed, on a first come-first serve basis .
Feel free to contact the Financial Aid Office if you have any questions or
problems applying for financial aid . The Office is located in Room 202 of the
Campus Activities Building and the telephone number is (315) 464-4329 .
Student Accounts (Bursar)
You may contact the Student Accounts Office for information regarding your
tuition statement, payments to your account and processing of student loan checks .
Refunds from financial aid funds may be picked up at our office .When refund checks
are ready, you will be notified via your upstate email . You will be receiving your
tuition billing statement under separate cover and payment must reach our office by

the payment due date printed on your bill .

aid on-line by logging onto your online
MY UPSTATE student account . In-state
residency forms may also be picked up
at our office or downloaded from our
website .
Optional Student Dining Program
SUNY Upstate Medical University offers a $100 .00 minimum declining balance
student dining program . There are three on-campus locations that the program
may be utilized at and a variety of menu items available . More details will be
available from Morrison Food Service at Orientation Check-In .
On Campus Parking and Car Registration
All students who plan to use monthly SUNY Upstate parking must register
their vehicle with the Parking Office . Please bring your vehicle registration to
Orientation Check-In on Thursday, August 25 . Final details regarding parking lot
assignments and fees for all other students will be available at Orientation Check-In .

White Coat Ceremonies
(CHP, COM and CON only)
The White Coat Ceremony is designed to convey to students that health
care professionals not only treat, but also care for patients . Students will be
welcomed to their College and the health care profession in the presence
of parents, family members and friends . The Colleges of Medicine, Health
Professions and Nursing have distinct celebrations:
College of Health Professions – Wednesday, August 31 at 5:00 pm in the
Goldstein Auditorium, Schine Student Center, Syracuse University Campus .

the Oncenter Convention Center
College of Nursing – Wednesday, August 24 at 5:00 pm in the 9th Floor
Auditorium,Weiskotten Hall .
More information regarding the ceremonies will be available shortly .
To facilitate the planning for the ceremony, we ask that all students in the
Colleges of Health Professions and Medicine and the Master’s Degree students in
the College of Nursing register online with their white coat size . Information on
how to access your online MY UPSTATE student account was mailed to you by
the Office of Student Admissions with your acceptance materials . If you have any
problems accessing your online MY UPSTATE account, please contact Nicole
Morgante, Manager of Student Data Systems, via email at morgantm@upstate.edu .
Please register for the White Coat Ceremony by July 15, 2011 .

Transportation
Syracuse is located at the crossroads of two interstate highway systems, east/west
I-90, the NewYork State Thruway, and north/south I-81 .
Air: Over 175 passenger flights arrive and depart daily from the Syracuse
Hancock International Airport, serviced by seven major airlines and several
commuter lines .
Bus: CENTRO provides public transportation for Syracuse and suburbs at a fare
of $1 .25 . Onondaga Coach, Greyhound, Syracuse & Oswego, and Adirondack
Trailways also provide inter-city passenger service .
Rail: Amtrak provides rail passenger transportation service from the William F .
Walsh Regional Transportation Center .
Education:
College and Universities: There are 44 private and state colleges within
the Greater Syracuse Region, with a combined enrollment of over 215,000
students . In the Syracuse area there are eight schools including Syracuse
