The goal of this program is to outline a process of cognitive rehabilitation grounded in evidence-based
practice that emphasizes collaborative development of functional treatment strategies with clients and
families that can be implemented and supported by a broad interdisciplinary team. The program will pro-
vide you with information on the nature of polytrauma and how you can modify the cognitive rehabilita-
tion process to meet the needs of your client.
DONALD MACLENNAN, MA, CCC-SLP, graduated from the Communication Disorders program
at the University of Minnesota in 1984. That same year, Mr. MacLennan began his career at the
Minneapolis VA Medical Center where he helped establish one of the VA’s first traumatic brain
injury teams. Mr. MacLennan has worked with clients with TBI across the continuum of care, from
acute rehabilitation to post-acute rehabilitation to home care, and he is currently working to estab-
lish a transitional rehabilitation program within the VA. Mr. MacLennan is currently working with
clients returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan whose exposure to blast injury results in
polytrauma with complex patterns of injuries that present significant challenges to the rehabilita-
tion process. Mr. MacLennan has used his expertise in cognitive rehabilitation to help build an
interdisciplinary brain injury team in which all members of the team contribute to the cognitive
 rehabilitation process.

 Message from your Presenter
“Cognitive rehabilitation is a complex process with a rapidly expanding literature. It
requires simultaneous treatment of multiple aspects of cognitive functions and, therefore,
requires the concerted efforts of a trained interdisciplinary team. Furthermore, cognitive
rehabilitation is controversial and there is an increasing expectation that clinicians can
provide evidence-based rationale for their therapies. The purpose of this course is to
assist clinicians in the challenge of developing a coherent team oriented, evidence-based
approach to cognitive rehabilitation that produces functional improvements in clients’
everyday activities.” Donald MacLennan, MA, CCC-SLP

“VERY NICE presentation. The ability to incorporate the patient’s occupational and personal interests
prior to incident into the re-teaching process was very practical. GREAT application/techniques!”
