Our Vision

     Fakenham Junior School is a vital part of the Fakenham community, working with parents, governors,
      schools and business.

     ICT is vital in our society, therefore it is a vital part of the curriculum and the learning experience at FJS.

     We will give our children the tools to forge ahead in the wider community; the desire to learn, the ability
      to question and the capacity to solve problems and make a difference.

School Organisation

  Each child is the particular responsibility of one class teacher. Most of the curriculum is taught by this class
  teacher, who is also the usual contact for children’s parents.

  The school is organised into Year Groups. Teachers from each Year Group work together to plan and
  evaluate. Sometimes one teacher will lead work on a particular theme or subject with all the children. In
  this way children gain the benefits of some specialist teaching. Parallel classes of children from the same
  year group follow the same aspects of the National Curriculum.

  The needs of children of different interests and abilities are met by the careful planning of a range of tasks
  and activities, by group work and by careful grouping to support good teaching and learning.

School Times

         Children may arrive on the premises from 8.30a.m. when the playground gates will be open.

School Facilities

 The school is fortunate to have a large site with plenty of facilities.

 We have our own indoor, heated, all-year-round swimming pool. The pool is used regularly for parents and
 toddlers swimming classes, as well as by the Funzone After School Club.

 There is a large school field and playground for the full range of games and athletic activities.

 The School Hall provides excellent space for gymnastics, dance and drama. The school has a specialist
 Music Room.

 Year 6 children enjoy the special facilities of their own block. This helps to provide a quiet area to support
 their learning and development. The recently refurbished ICT suite is in constant use by pupils and staff.
 This mirrors the very popular school library and the reading room for Years 3 and 4.

 Governors, staff, friends and children are working together to improve the site, developing the outdoor
 environment including the allotments and pond.

                                        A large number of local organisations now use the school’s facilities.

Out of School Care

 Funzone breakfast club operates from 7.30am to 8.45am each day, offering activities, supervision and food!
 From 8.15am pupils and staff can enjoy cereals, toast, bacon rolls and drinks, all at a very reasonable cost in
 the cafeteria, found in the school hall.

 After school care is provided on site for children from 4 to 11 years by Fun Zone. Fun Zone is open after
 school from 3.30pm – 6pm and from 8am to 4pm most holidays. There is a variety of activities and the
 opportunity to complete homework in a quiet corner. The Funzone Club was opened with the support of
 Norfolk County Council and New Opportunities Funding.

Parents and the School

 Communications - Informal contact is welcomed. This can be done any time. First, have a word with the
 class teacher concerned and share your worry. We will always do our best to iron things out with you.
 Lesley Cook, the Headteacher, is available most mornings from 8.50am-9.10am otherwise please contact
 Mrs Griffiths for an appointment at a mutually convenient time. In special circumstances a home visit can be

 School newsletter - the school publishes a fortnightly Newsletter and diary on alternate Fridays. This is
 published on the website but special arrangements can be made for those without a home computer.

 Home School Partnership
 A good partnership between home and school depends on a flow of information both ways. Please use the
 homework diary for simple messages, or visit the teacher.

 We ask all children to come to school equipped with pen, pencil, ruler, crayons and pritt stick in a pencil

 You can arrange to see your children’s work at any time by contacting the teacher. Feel free to come in
 when your child says ‘Please come and see what I have done today.” If you are visiting or helping in school
 you need to sign in at the Office and sign out when you leave.

 Your child’s schooling is provided free of charge. Nevertheless all schools benefit considerably from the
 voluntary contributions made by parents – contributions of time, and of money.

 Emergency contacts
 Mrs Griffiths maintains the register of emergency contacts for each child’s family. It is vital that the school is
 notified of changes immediately.

 Parent/teacher consultation meetings - in October parents are invited to a ‘Meet the Teacher Evening’
 to discuss settling-in issues and expectations. Parents and pupils are expected to attend the Pupil Progress
 Meeting in February, to discuss pupil’s achievement and targets.

 School report - towards the end of the Summer Term you will receive a full, written report on your child's
 progress and achievements in the past year.

 PARENT HELPERS are always welcome in the school. Please volunteer ! Some parents are able to help on
 a regular basis, e.g. part of a morning each week, listening to children read, assisting small groups with
 practical craft activities or helping children find the books they need from the school library. You may also
 be able to help your child’s class on an educational visit to a place of interest locally. If you would like to
 help please contact your child’s class teacher or the School Office as all volunteers need to complete a CRB

 The Friends of Fakenham Junior School are an active parent-led group who contribute a great deal to
 the life of the school and its pupils. They organise a variety of enjoyable fund-raising events, and donate
 significant funds to the school each year for extra facilities. We always need members for the committee, or
 to help with events. [Contact the Office Administrator for further information]

 Site Security
 Security is a priority for keeping the children safe. During the school day, access is only available though the
 front entrance. Entrance from Holt Road is accessed by using the intercom system.

 Educational Visits
 For some school activities, designed to enrich the curriculum, a specific voluntary contribution is requested.
 Visits to places of interest, residential experience, musicians’, artists’, and actors’ visits to school are some
 examples. Without sufficient voluntary contributions such important events may be cancelled.

 The school wishes every child to have the same curriculum opportunities. No child will be barred from an
 event because of financial circumstances. Special funds are available to support children in this case.
 [Parents are advised to contact the Head or class teacher. Requests are handled in confidence.]

 In addition, there is a formal, county-wide complaints procedure for use if all else fails. Details are available
 from the School Office.

Health, Welfare and Pastoral Care

 Pastoral Care
 At school we like to know each pupil very well, discovering their interests, hopes and fears. Children are
 encouraged to manage their own behaviour. The School expects good behaviour from all pupils.

 The behaviour policy is based on a number of reward systems – including a house points and good work
 assemblies which recognise effort and achievement in all aspects of school life.

 All pupils at FJS should be well mannered and polite. As well as a pattern of reward, there is a clear system
 for consequences which are imposed if poor behaviour becomes a problem. We always try to address these
 problems in partnership with parents.

 The class teacher is responsible for the children’s welfare. Further help is available from the Pastoral Support
 Assistant, Phase Leaders, Deputy and Headteacher.

 The school also has a Parent Support Adviser. (PSA) All parents can visit the PSA to discuss non curriculum
 issues from home and school which may have an impact on their children’s learning. The PSA can also
 arrange home visits when necessary.

 Health and Welfare
 Minor injuries are dealt with by staff with First Aid Certificates. Parents/Carers will always be contacted for
 more serious injuries. If a child is too ill to join in class activities he/she will be sent home immediately, for
 this reason it is vital that the school has up to date contact numbers.

 A Classroom Assistant has responsibilities for children taking regular medication. Please let her know of any
 particular difficulty or medical need your child may have. Medication cannot be administered without a
 signed form of parental consent.

 A School Health Advisor supports our school. She works closely with staff to implement aspects of the
 school’s Health and Sex Education programmes and will see parents by arrangement.

 Child Protection
 All Norfolk schools are required to follow the Norfolk Safeguarding Children Board Guidelines designed to protect
 children from abuse. Concerns for children’s well-being and safety will be reported by the Head to the Social
 Services. A copy of the Norfolk Guidelines is available for reference in the School Office.

 If your child is absent from school we ask you to contact the school. Telephone the Office (01328 862188) from
 8.30a.m. Messages can be left on an answer machine when the school is closed. The Office Staff will contact any
 family who have not informed us on the first day of the pupil’s absence. Unless we hear from you we have to
 record absence in the register as “unauthorised”. Frequent, lengthy or unexplained absences are followed up by
 school staff and the PSA. In more serious cases this will be referred to the Attendance Improvement Officer who
 is based at Children’s Services, Market Street, North Walsham, NR28 9BZ Tel: 01692 409540.

 We have 286 pupils on roll. At time of printing the level of unauthorised absence is 0.38% with authorised
 absence being 4.99%.

 If your child needs to visit the doctor, dentist or hospital during school time please ensure that the school
 office is informed. We ask you, on these occasions, to collect and return children to the school office, to sign
 them out/in.

 These should always be taken during school holidays. In exceptional circumstances the Headteacher may
 authorise up to 10 days annual leave only in one academic year. A request should be made to the School Office.


 All children wear school uniform. This contributes to a feeling of belonging and pride in the school.

 Boys and girls may wear green fleeces and rain jackets with the school logo, which are available through the
 School Office.

 Girls select from: Grey tunic, skirt or grey flannel trousers. White blouse with school tie or a white polo
 shirt. Green school pullover or school sweatshirt, white socks or grey/green tights. Black school shoes and
 white socks. For Summer, green/white check dresses or green polo dresses, tailored grey shorts, a white

 Boys select from: Grey shorts or long Trousers. White shirt and a school tie or white polo shirt. Green
 school pullover or school sweatshirt. For Summer, tailored grey shorts with white shirt or polo-type short-
 sleeved shirt. Black school shoes and grey or white socks.

 P.E. Kit Dark shorts, white sports shirt or ‘T’ shirt and plimsolls for P.E. indoors. For outdoor games a tracksuit
 or old sweatshirt and joggers, and a pair of sports trainers. Please make sure that all equipment fits properly ( it
 can be upsetting when children cannot change quickly) and that trainers and plimsolls are not past use. Flapping
 soles and no laces can be dangerous during P.E. sessions.

 Please make sure that children have the correct kit in school on the correct day. This information will be in the
 homework diary.

 Swimming kit: costume/trunks, hat, and towel.
 Jewellery is not appropriate for school. Small stud earrings are acceptable; however children must be able to
 remove these for P.E.

 Hair: should remain natural colour in a reasonable and practical style.

 Suppliers of uniform
 The School Office sells a variety of uniform items plus swimming bags and hats. Order forms are also available in
 the School Office for sweatshirts and waterproof jackets/fleeces. These all have the school name and are sold by
 the Friends of the School. Contact Mrs Griffiths (01328 862188) for availability and prices of all items. The
 Friends of Fakenham Junior School provide a book bag for every new pupil.

 Protective clothing
 Parents are also asked to provide their child with a craft apron, for messy, practical work involving glue and
 paint. [A man’s shirt, with shortened sleeves and elastic at the wrists, makes an ideal coverall.]

Lunchtime arrangements

 The school policy is fruit only for snack time. Children can buy fruit from the trolley or bring fruit from

 Most children purchase a lunch each day from the school cafeteria. A menu of popular hot and cold options
 are available. Healthy eating is actively encouraged. Children pay for the food they choose with cash
 (brought to school each day in a named purse) or with tokens. Tokens are provided for children eligible for
 free school meals. There are two “sittings” at lunchtime. All pupils are expected to keep the dining area
 clean and tidy. Children take turns to wipe trays.

 You may wish your child to return home at lunchtime for a meal. Please inform the class teacher if your
 child is going home for lunch. Children may choose to bring a packed lunch to eat in the School Hall.

 Lunchtime supervision in the cafeteria/hall and on the playground/field is provided by a team of mid-day
 supervisors led by Mrs H Palmer.

 Free School Meals
 Parents who have any enquiries about this or any other support can obtain application forms, in confidence,
 from the School Office. These should be completed and forwarded to the school. If your child usually has a
 packed lunch, but would occasionally like to join the special event meals, fill in the forms now. It could save

Lunchtime and after school activities

 Clubs are held for a range of activities. Sporting clubs include those for football, netball, cricket and
 swimming. Clubs take place during the lunchtime or after-school. There is a charge for some activities.


 Children who live more than three miles from the school may be entitled to a free bus pass on a Norfolk
 County Council school bus. Spare places on these school buses may also be purchased by those not eligible
 for free transport.

 Homework helps children to learn more, and raise their achievements

 Parental support is important. Children need to develop a “homework routine”. They benefit from a quiet
 place to study, unhindered by television or other interruptions. They need your parental interest and help.

 All children have a homework diary. This must be brought to school every day. All homework requirements
 are outlined in the Homework Booklet.

Special Educational Needs

 Children’s needs vary. The school’s response is flexible to meet the wide range of needs children have. We
 support children with educational, medical and behavioural needs, as well as providing challenges for the
 more able pupils.

 We are able to draw on the expertise of a range of services, including doctors, speech therapists, and
 medical workers. The school Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SenCo) and a School Support Team
 from Norfolk Children’s Services meet termly. This provides advice from an educational psychologist, and
 from advisory special needs teachers.

 So that we can best meet the needs of pupils with special educational needs within each class we work hard
 to match the work set to the capabilities of all children.

 Whenever possible we use additional adults, teachers and classroom assistants, to work with children in
 smaller groups. Specific intervention strategies, such as sound discovery are used to support the learning of
 children who require additional support.

 We endeavour to work closely with parents. Regular parent consultation meetings provide opportunities to
 talk about individual education plans and to discuss ways parents and school can work together to provide
 the best education for the children, because we care about the achievements of all children. We challenge
 the able and support those with difficulties. We value the well being of each child.

 The FJS Special Educational Needs Policy reflects the statutory requirements of the SEN Code of Practice.

 Gifted and Talented
 It is recognised that children should be educated in a way which enables them to work at the highest level
 possible with their ability and interest, both for the good of others and for their own satisfaction.

 We welcome the challenge of providing an appropriate, supportive curriculum to enable each pupil who has
 been identified as one of the most-able or talented to reach their full potential. This is done through
 extension activities, such as open-ended tasks and activities which promote higher order thinking and

 We also aim to provide enrichment activities, such as school clubs, projects with Fakenham High School,
 visiting experts and focussed group work.

 The school will seek to discover and utilise a range of strategies to challenge these pupils in line with the
 National Quality Standards.

The Curriculum

 The National Curriculum and The Norfolk Agreed Syllabus for RE, provide a detailed framework of
 requirements within which teachers plan the work of their classes.

 We work with colleagues from our partner Infant and High Schools in Fakenham to ensure that children
 achieve high standards and make good progress throughout their schooldays, and beyond.

 In Key Stage 2 children’s learning is promoted through a variety of subject-focussed lessons and a series of
 subject-based topics, sometimes integrating several aspects of study and introducing diversity of culture,
 faith and ethnicity.

 Parents can contribute to topic work, for example, by encouraging their children to undertake background
 research in the local library. We value this help!

 First Hand Experience
 Children learn best when their attention is caught and their imaginations are stimulated by lively teaching.

 Direct observation leads to questioning and discussion.          Children are encouraged to pursue their
 investigations in the school library, through using a computer, or by other means. In this way independent
 and enquiring minds are fostered.

 Visits and visitors play an important part. Both local day visits to places of interest, and residential visits
 further afield are important. There are opportunities to take part in a residential visit in Years 5 and 6.

Literacy provides the main framework for learning throughout the curriculum. We aim for children to
understand what they hear and read, and to be able to express themselves clearly in speech and writing.

Literacy taught at FJS is based on the Primary Framework. This includes work in speaking and listening,
reading and writing. Speaking and listening is developed through oral activities such as group/class
discussion, presentations and drama.

Children read a variety of literature at school including plays, poetry, stories and non-fiction texts. Home
reading is encouraged and recorded in the Homework diary. All families are expected to support reading at

Children have opportunities to develop their writing in a range of forms, for a variety of purposes and
audiences. Handwriting and spelling are taught as inter-related skills and as part of the writing process that
involves re-drafting and proof reading.

At FJS mathematics is taught for an average of an hour a day, in recognition of its’ importance as a subject.

A typical lesson would include:
     Some counting at an appropriate level for the children e.g. counting back in 1s from 204, or
        counting in fractions.
     A game or activity to ‘warm-up’ the brain. This is a chance to rehearse, sharpen and develop mental

We have a strong emphasis upon solving problems in maths. We have regular sessions to improve mental
calculation skills. Children are given lots of practical experiences, using a wide range of equipment, to
encourage depth of understanding and enjoyment.

environment will be used in the children’s learning.

Science teaching also makes an important contribution to the personal and social development of children.
Computers in School
The school is well equipped to surpass the needs of the National Curriculum for Information Communication
Technology (ICT). Our well equipped ICT suite allows all pupils to work individually at a high specification
PC without the need for children to share. Since 2006, every class has had its own Interactive Whiteboard
and the use of digital voting systems. This has allowed all children to interact with the learning environment
and take a more active part in lessons. The school network allows children to access their work using the

                                                                     the school chooses open source software
                                                                     that is available, free, for use at home.
This allows children to continue their learning outside the classroom without the expenditure required to buy
commercial products.

Information communication technology is a rapidly changing, everyday necessity for all of us. The pupils at
Fakenham Junior School will be well equipped for whatever the technology of tomorrow might offer.

PSHE & Citizenship
Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship aims to give pupils the knowledge, skills and
understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives. Children are taught these skills
through all subjects as well as having planned lessons on key issues, which alternate with child led class
councils. Alongside this is the school council. This helps to ensure that the pupils’ voice is heard and
impacts on the school and community.

Sex and relationship education is taught at FJS as part of the PSHE/Science curriculum. It gives children the
opportunity to develop skills such as assertiveness, responsible decision making and self awareness at an
age-appropriate level. Parents are invited to view a copy of the Health and Sex Education policy and discuss
the matter with the Headteacher.

Religious Education
Religious Education aims “to help pupils to understand what religion is, and to know how different people
worship and embrace their religion.”

At this school RE is taught in accordance with Norfolk’s Agreed Syllabus. We are a multi-cultural school.
Though our main religion is Christianity we learn about many other religions and practices. Children are
encouraged to develop an understanding of the beliefs, values and traditions of a range of religions and
cultures and further their picture of the faith of the local community and the diversity of others, nationally
and internationally.

A copy of the Norfolk Agreed Syllabus can be viewed at the school.

Collective Worship
Collective worship is held daily in a variety of groups. Assemblies are essentially non-denominational. They
are led by members of staff and by visitors, including local clergy.

Families with specific beliefs have the right to withdraw their child from collective worship and/or Religious

At Fakenham Junior School we believe that physical activity experienced in a safe and supportive
environment makes a vital contribution to a pupil’s physical, social, intellectual an emotional development.
Physical activity provides opportunities for pupils to be competitive, creative and to face up to different
challenges as individuals, in groups and in teams.

We have our own swimming pool and swimming instructor giving the children the chance to develop
swimming skills and water safety. During PE children are encouraged to take part in a wide variety of
activities to promote enjoyment in taking exercise, which will be continued into adulthood as part of a
healthy lifestyle.

The school also provides an extensive out of hours learning programme throughout the year, many free of

Children regularly compete in many inter school competitions and against other schools in the North Norfolk
and Norfolk School Sport Cluster competitions.

Fakenham Junior School has a practical approach to music, which includes opportunities for singing and
instrumental work, composing music and lyrics, and listening to a wide range of musical styles from a variety
of cultures. Children are encouraged to perform their work to others.

                                                                 Further teaching is provided by specialist,
                                                                 peripatetic instrumental teachers. Tuition is
                                                                 currently provided in the violin, ‘cello, flute,
                                                                 clarinet, saxophone and guitar.

Design and Technology
Design and Technology prepares pupils to participate in tomorrow’s rapidly changing technologies. They
learn to think creatively and to become problem solvers. Our children learn to combine practical skills with
an understanding of aesthetics, social skills and environmental and health issues. As they do, they begin to
reflect on and evaluate design technologies past and present and their uses and effects.

Throughout this subject, the emphasis is very much on learning through experience.

             ‘Tell me and I forget – show me and I may remember – let me do it, and I learn.’

Art gives children the opportunity to develop their creativity through investigating different ideas from a
range of starting points, some of which link in with other areas of learning for example Year 3 Egyptian art
and Year 5 Tudor portraits topics.

Children experiment with a wide range of materials, from pencils and paint to fabrics and clay, to practise
and develop techniques. Children will work independently and in groups to create 2d and 3d final pieces
from a small to a large scale which is celebrated through display.

The children look carefully at pieces of work that have been produced by other artists and use this to guide
them with their own ideas. This requires the children to think about different interpretations and supports
them in evaluating their own and others work.

The children have experienced Art days when Year 3 made canopic jars, Year 4 made Celts and Romans
people, Year 5 made Ancient Greek buildings and Year 6 created their own pop art.

Children study important episodes and developments in British history; Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings,
Life in Tudor Times and Britain since 1930. They also learn about life in Ancient Egypt, and about aspects of
local history.

Children are encouraged to recognise why people did things, and why events happened. They use
photographs and pictures, artefacts, written accounts and museum displays as sources of information. They
identify differences between ways of life from different periods and cultures.

Children will investigate a range of places and themes through asking geographical questions.

In their studies they will learn about real people not stereotypes from a variety of cultures.

Children also study coasts, weather, settlement and environmental issues.

Geography is essentially a practical subject and there will be opportunities for field study trips in each year
