a Valley appellation
A n appellation, or AVA (American Viticultural Area), is a designated geographical
region that possesses unique climate, soil and physical features which
distinguish it from surrounding areas. This combination of soil, slope and sunshine
influences the growth and character of the grapes, which in turn produces wines
distinctive in personality to that appellation.
Established in 1983, the Yakima Valley was the first
Washington State AVA, and is now home to more
than 75 wineries and over one-third of the state’s
vineyards, boasting over 12,000 acres of premium
Here’s a look at how soil, slope and sunshine
come together to produce great wine in the
Soil When growing wine grapes, it is impor tant that the soil is loose enough so that
water does not accumulate in the ground, causing a slowdown in flavor development
in the fruit. The Yakima Valley was sculpted by a number of ancient wrinkles formed in
the land when volcanoes cooled and sank, leaving behind a large basalt layer in
the ear th. Prehistoric floods then aided in creating optimal soils as they layered
the basalt with deposits of fine silt, loam, loess and cobble—each offering the
proper drainage necessary to keep the vine’s vigor under control.
Slope The sunny slopes of the Yakima Valley foothills are blessed with a long
growing period, extended daylight hours, and cool evenings that yield bold, hear ty
and luscious world-class wines. Hot summer days and cool nights provide the
perfect growing environment. This large fluctuation between daytime and nighttime
temperatures is considered key by winemakers and wine grape growers to attain
intense varietal character. The Valley’s cold winters kill pests that are prevalent
in other, milder wine growing regions throughout the United States, reducing
the need for chemical repellents on the fruit.
Sunshine Within the framework of sunshine we include all climate factors. Beyond
sunlight, we look for sufficient irrigation to promote natural sugar development and to
the temperature-moderating effects of the cool Yakima Valley nights.
Because the Yakima Valley Appellation is blessed with a bevy of the best wine grape-
growing conditions, nearly every type of wine grape can be successfully grown in one
or more of the Valley’s regions—

The following is
A sk any Yakima Valley winemaker and they’ll tell
you: great wine begins in the vineyard. The art of
winemaking is to allow the land to express itself in
a list of growers the grapes, and the grapes to express themselves in

outstanding grapes settled here. Great soil and great weather are the
that make award- basics of great wine. Meet a few of our growers:

Yakima Valley Vineyard of the Year
“Hugh and Kathy Shiels’ DuBrul Vineyard on a south-facing
slope above the Yakima River in the Yakima Valley—also
our 2007 Vineyard of the Year—is a difficult site to
manage, with many “microclimates” that require careful
monitoring. But vineyard manager Larry Dolan works with
the Shiels and their crew to ensure each vine gets what it
needs. The result: some of the most elegant yet approachable wines in the state—
from acclaimed wineries such as Owen Roe and Woodward Canyon—are made
from these Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and other varieties.”
- SEATTLE Magazine announcing DuBrul Vineyard as “2009 Vineyard of the Year”
Hugh and Kathy Shiels planted their steep rocky hillside in 1992, taking care to make
sure every varietal was planted so the soil and aspect would create the best expression
of the vine. The ladies of their crew painstakingly shape every vine each growing season
to provide optimal exposure to sunlight, while from below the low-vigor soils combine
with a deficit-irrigation regimen to produce small berries, small clusters and low yields.
Over time, DuBrul Vineyard has established a reputation for growing superb grapes.
The Shiels sell to wineries in Walla Walla, the Seattle area, and Oregon. DuBrul fruit
is used both in vineyard-
designated bottlings and as DuBrul Vineyard
the ingredient that can lift
a blend to the next level.
In 2001 the Shiels star ted
retaining a small por tion of
their grapes for their estate
winery, Côte Bonneville.
The winery was named a

in 2008, and their 2004
