Health & Safety for Music Industry Workers

Safety Assessment Project

Ideally this activity can be undertaken at an established band venue before, during and
after the show. Unfortunately this is not practical for many classes. This activity may be
undertaken in a school hall or theatre but it must be a venue, which at least occasionally
hosts live music shows.

There are three major objectives to this exercise:

• 1. Assess the safety standards of a venue
• 2. Assess the safety standards of band equipment

• 3. Demonstrate safe manual handling techniques.

The first two objectives will require a list of good and bad safety features. This work
should be done as a project and handed in for assessment. The third will require your
own demonstration of handling road cases safely. A word of warning about the third
objective in case someone accidently hurts themselves: this may have to be undertaken with
empty cardboard boxes if your school, TAFE or place of learning cannot provide adequate insurance
cover for this activity.

NOTE!
A safety assessment is not a witchhunt. Having been alerted to important music industry
safety issues in this workbook you are expected to carefully observe and report on safety,
but do not to accuse people directly or take problems into your own hands!
