The president of Water Works wants a large arch built near the entrance to the park. He gave the architect the
sketch and equation below. The equation gives the height, y , of the arch above a point x feet from one of the
bases of the arch. This means that if you are standing x feet from one base, the point of the arch directly over
your head will be feet above the ground.

   a) Use the equation to find the height of the arch at these distances from the left base. Graph these points
      on the coordinate grid above.

           1) 10 feet

           2) 30 feet

           3) 50 feet

   b) Another architect used the expression because he claimed it was equivalent to the
expression . Was the architect correct? Why or why not?
When a giant roller coaster was built at Water Works, attendance began to increase. The business manager
wrote the equation to estimate the daily number of visitors m months after the roller coaster
ride opened.

   1) Use the equation to find the number of visitors 1 month after the roller coaster opened.

   2) Use the equation to find the number of visitors 5 months after the roller coaster opened.

   3) Use the equation to find the number of visitors 12 months after the roller coaster opened.

   4) How is this equation similar to and different from the other equations the business manager has created?

Evaluate the expressions for the given x-value. Show your steps.
