					                                      The Seven Unique Continents



Time: 60 minutes                                                         Subject: Social Studies

Grade Level: 2nd grade

Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to have the students learn about the seven continents of Earth.
This lesson will teach the students the unique characteristics of each of the seven continents, but will
show the students that all of the continents for together to make planet Earth. The students will learn
the unique animals, vegetation, culture, architecture and languages of each continent. The student will
then write about their favorite continent and its unique characteristics.

Objectives:

    1.   The student will name the seven continents and four oceans.
    2.   The student will identify unique landforms of each continent.
    3.   The student will identify unique climate of each continent.
    4.   The student will identify unique vegetation of each continent.
    5.   The student will identify unique animals of each continent.
    6.   The student will identify unique architecture of each continent.
    7.   The student will identify the unique culture of each continent.
    8.   The student will write two informational paragraphs describing their favorite continent.

Pre Assessment:

The students do not have previous knowledge of the lesson being taught.

Set Induction:

The teacher will say, “Good morning students, today in our Social Studies lesson, we are going to learn
about our world. Our world has seven continents and four oceans, and we are going to learn about
them all. But, first we are going to watch a YouTube video called the Seven Continents Song as a way to
introduce our lesson.” The teacher will instruct the students to pay attention to each continent that is
being talked about. Please share the video with the students. When the video is over, have the
students recall the continents that they just learned from the video.
Procedures:

    1. The student will take part in the discussion of the continents and oceans by reviewing the video
       that they previously watched.
    2. The student will learn about North America and its unique landforms, climate, vegetation,
       animals, architecture and culture from the PowerPoint presented by the teacher.
    3. The student will learn about South American and its unique landforms, climate, vegetation,
       animals, architecture and culture from the PowerPoint presented by the teacher.
    4. The student will learn about Africa and its unique landforms, climate, vegetation, animals,
       architecture and culture from the PowerPoint presented by the teacher.
    5. The student will learn about Asia and its unique landforms, climate, vegetation, animals,
       architecture and culture from the PowerPoint presented by the teacher.
    6. The student will learn about Europe and its unique landforms, climate, vegetation, animals,
       architecture and culture from the PowerPoint presented by the teacher.
    7. The student will learn about Antarctica and its unique landforms, climate, vegetation, animals,
       architecture and culture from the PowerPoint presented by the teacher.
    8. The student will learn about Australia and its unique landforms, climate, vegetation, animals,
       architecture and culture from the PowerPoint presented by the teacher.
    9. The student will learn about the four oceans that surround the seven continents from the
       PowerPoint presented by the teacher.

Closing:

Today we learned about the seven continents and their unique characteristics. We also learned about
the four different oceans that surround each of the continents. I would like each of you to write two
paragraphs describing which continent you enjoyed learning about the most. Each paragraph should
contain four to six sentences, and should have correct spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization.

Follow-Up Activity:

As a class, we will be celebrating Earth Day. We will take a day to appreciate Earth and all of its unique
characteristics.

Adaptations and Accommodations:

    1. If the students need to review a continent, show the website again, in order to refresh their
       memory of their continent in which they are writing about.
    2. If Miller would like to draw a picture of the continent he is writing about, please allow him to do
       so. Drawing helps him connect what he is learning.
    3. Mariah and Adriana might need help writing about their continents. If they do need help,
       please allot time to work with them one on one.

Connections to Real World Context:

    1. The students will need to know the seven continents and four oceans in order to understand the
       geography of the world in which they live. The students need to know the unique
       characteristics of the continent in which they were born in, so they can have a better
       understanding of where they came from.
    2. If the students ever travel throughout the world, to a different continent, this lesson will give
       the previous knowledge of the place that they will be going to. They can relate better to the
       region that they may one day visit.

    2. Website with pictures and characteristics of each continent.
