                                                  RETOSA LODGES GRADING STANDARDS

Introduction
The following set of standards have been prepared for is a Lodge. It represents one in a package of six accommodation categories including;
    Vacation Guest houses or resorts,
    Self-service apartments,
    Guest houses and B + B’s,
    Urban Guest houses and
    Caravan and campgrounds.

There are approximately 235 quality assurance standards, 35 universal accessibility standards and 45 responsible tourism standards. This
represents a total of more than 300 standards.

These standards have been selected and written in such a way that they are applicable to the majority of urban Guest houses across the SADC
region. However there has been no effort to simplify the standards at the risk of diminishing their overall intent. To the contrary. The
standards are for the most part rigorous and are equal or better than those found in many of the recognized international grading schemes. In
fact the standards are based on a review of the most contemporary international standards as well as the more progress of standards in
southern Africa. For instance the quality assurance standards have borrowed from the new French standards while the responsible tourism
standards were inspired by the green certification program for Botswana. The universal accessibility standards were inspired by recent
accessibility legislation in Canada and California.

It will be in the best interest of the individual country as well the SADC region if each nation can assess each standard and make modifications
and refinements. This is critical considering that the final set of standards will eventually be mandatory.

Two elements have not been included in the standards. They include the identification of a mandatory standards as well as a weighting system
to determine the final value for each star rating. It is anticipated that the RETOSA member nations submit those standards that are considered
mandatory as well as a brief description of their preferred waiting.
