BIOGEOGRAPHY
The study of living things and
where (in the WORLD) they live
  STOP AND WRITE YOUR OWN
       DEFINITION FOR

  BIOGEOGRAPHY

Now, make a sketch that will help
 you remember what it means.
Throughout the world we find
 different organisms living in
different regions of the globe.
   Untold
tragedies of
Continental
   Drift.
            Continental Drift
• What is the root word for “Continental”?
• CONTINENT
• What does the word continent mean?

• What does the word “drift” mean?

• Talk at your table and raise your hand if you can
define continental drift without using the words
  “continent” or “drift”.
Current Continental Drift Theory
• Plate tectonics, incorporating
continental drift, is the ruling theory.

• Tectonic plate movement could have
  occurred very rapidly, and
  ‘spontaneously.’ This concept is known
  as catastrophic plate tectonics.
           Continental Drift
Today you will watch a video clip about
continental drift. After the clip, I will ask
you to name two observations which
scientists use to support the theory of
 continental drift—in other words, two
FACTS that support the theory. I want you
to summerize these (get rid of all the
details and state the main idea). The clip
 is about 10 minutes long.
           Continental Drift
Talk at your table and write two facts
   supporting the theory. Summarize these
   (you don’t need big words).

1. Spreading Ocean Floor
2. Cracks in the earth’s crust
Now, write a definition for continental drift,
without using the words themselves and
IN YOUR DEFINITION ADD TWO FACTS
      WHICH SUPPORT THE THEORY.

Continental Drip?
   New discoveries could
  support this theory even
more or cause the model to
 be abandoned. Such is the
nature of scientific progress.
     Scientific models
      come and go.
Dispersal
Define the word

 Write the three ways organisms
             disperse.
DISPERSAL
What are three methods
     of dispersal?

  Write these on your
      worksheet.
         Limits to Dispersal
• Turn to page 730-731

• Complete the concept map on the back of
  your notes

• Also, complete the summary box.
Rephrase the ideas and generalize in your
summary. Underline at least three key
  terms.
Canyon
The End
    The study of
 Biogeography also
involves the study of
the different climates
   of the different
regions of the world.
What two things make up
 weather or CLIMATE?
 The mid-Atlantic Ridge (arrow),
clearly visible by satellite imaging.
