                             Academy brochure where you will find information
                             about our really exciting range of Music and
                             Performing Arts opportunities. No matter which
                             course or subjects you are studying, there are brilliant
                             activities to enhance your time at the College. The
                             Performing Arts Academy has four specialisms – the
                             Dance Company, Drama Academy, Show Choir and
                             Rock Academy. You can find out more about each of
                             these in this booklet. In addition to the Academies we
                             also run a wide range of enrichment groups including
                             our award-winning College Choir, instrumental
                             ensembles and vocal groups that are open to students
                             across the College, as well as our fantastic Music
                             Centre for expert one-to-one tuition.

                             Our Academy Programme means you get to work
                             with like-minded students and our highly talented and
                             enthusiastic Academy Directors. You will learn a wide
                             range of skills by becoming involved, not just about
                             rehearsing and performing, but also experience that
                             you can transfer to all parts of your life, like working as
                             part of a team, planning, presentation and confidence.
                             This is really valuable, especially when you come to
                             write CVs and make applications for jobs or other

                             We support the Performing Arts Academy with a
                             range of performance opportunities, both locally
                             and nationally. These performances give you
                             the opportunity to take part in exciting public
                             performances where you will develop your skills and
                             confidence. In fact, having the opportunity to perform
                             in the discipline you love is reason alone to apply for
                             a place in one of the Academies!

                                                                         Amy Wigglesworth, Director...
                                                                         “Our Academy offers you the chance to experience what it is like to
                                                                         be a dancer working in a company. You will experience technique
                                                                         classes which will help you to develop virtuosity and strength in
                                                                         your performance, as well as learning choreographic skills through
                                                                         devising new work. Throughout the year you will create innovative
                                                                         performance pieces which will be performed in professional venues.
                                                                         These events allow you to engage with other young dancers from
                                                                         the area, forming important relationships while celebrating dance.”
                                                                         Amy trained at the University of Chichester before graduating
                                                                         in 2008. During her time at University, Amy performed as part
                                                                         of 3Fall Dance Company, touring and performing at professional
                                                                         venues around the country. She has worked alongside renowned
                                                                         choreographers including Nanette Kincaid (ex-AMP), Ben Wright
                                                                         (Bgroup) and Lila Dance Company. Amy is the Programme Manager
                                                                         for Dance at the College.

                                                                         “I had considered studying the BTEC in Dance but I wanted to keep
                                                                         my options open and study other subjects as well. Although I decided
                                                                         to study an A Level in Dance, I wanted to get more practical dance
                                                                         experience alongside my course and the Dance Academy provided
                                                                         me with the perfect opportunity to do just that. It’s also a great way
                                                                         to keep fit and in shape whilst meeting like-minded people and
                                                                         making new friends.”
                                                                         Emma, former pupil of West Somerset Community College in
                                                                         Minehead, is studying A Levels in Dance, Graphics, Photography
                                                                         and Psychology. She is currently keeping her options open but is
                                                                         considering the possibility of progressing in to a performance
                                                                         related career.

                                                                  Daniel Hawthorne, Director...
                                                                  “This Academy runs as a theatre company based on the principles
                                                                  of team work and ensemble performance. You will explore scripted
                                                                  plays from different eras and also have the chance to create original
                                                                  pieces of drama within the group. You will develop improvisational
                                                                  skills and participate regularly in exercises which are designed to
                                                                  develop your ability to think quickly and creatively. The Academy is
                                                                  a great opportunity for you to hone your acting skills, develop your
                                                                  confidence and will help you if you are thinking of pursuing a career
                                                                  in drama.”
                                                                  Daniel trained at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts. He
                                                                  has worked as a professional actor in theatre, film, television and
                                                                  voice over since 1995. During this time he has taken numerous
                                                                  leading roles and completed national tours working with the Royal
                                                                  Shakespeare Company and the BBC. As the founder of the theatre-
                                                                  in-education company Shakespeare’s Children, he has worked in all
                                                                  levels of education from primary to university.

                                                                  Eloise Roan, student...
                                                                  “I’ve always enjoyed drama but decided not to study it as part of my
                                                                  A Level programme. Being part of the Drama Academy has enabled
                                                                  me to get involved in drama in a fun and light-hearted atmosphere
                                                                  without having to sit exams or worry about the marks that I will get
                                                                  at the end of a performance. I didn’t know anyone when I started the
                                                                  Academy but it’s been a great way to meet people and make friends
                                                                  other than those I’ve made on my course.”
                                                                  Eloise, former pupil of Huish Episcopi school in Langport, is studying
                                                                  A Levels in English Language & Literature, Film Studies, Fine Art and
                                                                  Physics. She would like to go onto study Film at Bristol University

ShOW ChOir

                                                                              Kathryn Stevens, Director...
                                                                              “The Show Choir gives performers the opportunity to combine
                                                                              choral, close harmony singing with choreography. A place in the
                                                                              Show Choir is very much sought after and students enjoy a busy
                                                                              performance calendar with many high profile performances. Most
                                                                              recently the choir worked with internationally renowned choirmaster
                                                                              Gareth Malone on his CBBC programme The Big Performance and
                                                                              performed live on BBC1 for Children In Need. In the past the Show
                                                                              Choir has taken part in the talent show Don’t Stop Believing which
                                                                              aired live on Channel 5. It was also named UK’s Best Glee Club by
                                                                              Lee Mead and the cast of Wicked, and subsequently performed in
                                                                              the West End at the Apollo Victoria Theatre alongside the cast of
                                                                              Wicked. Concert performances have included The Royal Albert Hall,
                                                                              London and Universal Studios in Florida.”
                                                                              Kathryn studied at Chetham’s School of Music and The Guildhall
                                                                              School of Music and Drama. She has worked with many of the
                                                                              South West’s leading theatre companies and has been awarded
                                                                              Best Musical Director by the Somerset Fellowship of Drama for two
                                                                              of her productions. She is a Programme Manager for Music and
                                                                              coordinates the Bridgwater Music Centre.

                                                                              “When I heard that I’d got a place in the Show Choir I was incredibly
                                                                              happy and so excited about what was to come. Being part of the Show
                                                                              Choir and having the opportunity to do high profile performances
                                                                              like Children In Need live on BBC1 was both an exciting and nerve-
                                                                              wracking experience that I will never forget. I loved every moment of
                                                                              it and learnt so much about the differences between performing for
                                                                              theatre and the television.”
                                                                              Emma, former pupil of Haygrove School in Bridgwater, is studying
                                                                              the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts. She hopes
                                                                              to progress on to drama school on completion of her course and is
                                                                              auditioning for Laine Theatre Arts College and Italia Conti Academy

                                                                 Luke Allen, Director...
                                                                 “The Rock line ups have previously included guitars, drums, basses,
                                                                 keyboard, brass and vocals. The groups have now experienced
                                                                 many tours throughout the South of the UK on a professional double
                                                                 decker tour bus, and have entered many local and national band
                                                                 competitions, which are great for experience and exposure. Our
                                                                 students play a wide variety of styles of rock and pop music, the only
                                                                 stipulation being that it must suit a public performance, and with the
                                                                 ultimate goal of producing a solid, professional performance every
                                                                 Luke performs classical, jazz, modern rock and popular music on
                                                                 saxophone, clarinet, piano and keyboard, as well as conducting
                                                                 and musical directing a wide variety of ensembles. His professional
                                                                 experience includes performances at venues such as The Royal
                                                                 Albert Hall, The NEC and Bournemouth International Centre,
                                                                 along with many appearances on national television. Luke is also
                                                                 Programme Manager for Music at Bridgwater College.

                                                                 “I have always enjoyed singing and performing but previously I
                                                                 never had the chance to play with a live band; now that I’m part
                                                                 of the Academy I get to do that on a weekly basis! The Academy
                                                                 has helped to build my confidence and improve my stage presence
                                                                 through performing in gigs at various venues, in front of a range of
                                                                 crowd sizes. It’s also given me a fantastic opportunity- not only to
                                                                 meet new people, but also to form really strong friendships with
                                                                 people I wouldn’t have otherwise met on my course.”
