"Santa Cruz County 2011 Crop Report press release"
County of Santa Cruz OFFICE OF THE AGRICULTURAL COMMISSIONER MARY LOU NICOLETTI AGRICULTURAL COMMISSIONER SEALER OF WEIGHTS AND MEASURES DIRECTOR, MOSQUITO AND VECTOR CONTROL FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 30, 2012 Contact: Mary Lou Nicoletti Agricultural Commissioner (831) 454-2620 / (831) 763-8080 SANTA CRUZ COUNTY 2011 CROP REPORT RELEASED The office of the County Agricultural Commissioner has released the crop report for 2011. The values presented are gross values. Gross production values and yields are influenced by many factors including weather, labor, market demand, and accessibility. The gross values presented do not include production costs, such as expenditures associated with insect pests and disease, labor, fuel, feed, fertilizer, land, pesticides, and regulatory requirements. The total gross production value of Santa Cruz County agricultural commodities for 2011 was $565,740,000. This is an increase of $33,214,000 from the 2010 production value of $532,526,000. Much of the increase is due to increased acreage and production for raspberries. The highest valued crop in Santa Cruz County remains strawberries. Raspberries, the second highest valued crop commanded high prices. Cut flowers, vegetables, and blackberries are also high value crops. Exceptionally fertile soil, a climate that allows for year around production of some crops, and consumer demand for high value, quality crops contribute to high values for agricultural production. Many value-added and organically produced commodities are grown in our county. Innovative production techniques lead to increased yield and prolonged growing season. The 2011 crop report is attached. It will also be available on the Agricultural Commissioner webpage: http://www.agdept.com/ . 175 WESTRIDGE DRIVE, WATSONVILLE, CALIFORNIA 95076 TELEPHONE (831) 763-8080 FAX (831) 763-8255
