Why Do We Write Expositions?
Expositions are used to argue a case for or against a particular position or point of view.

How Do We Structure Expositions?
Expositions are organised to include a ‘statement of position’, ‘arguments’ and a ‘reinforcement of position statement’. The number of arguments may vary
in expositions. The statement of position stage usually includes a ‘preview of arguments’. Each argument stage consists of a ‘point’ and
‘elaboration’. In the elaboration the argument is supported by evidence. Arguments are ordered according to the writer’s choice, usually according to criteria
of strong and weak arguments. The reinforcement of the statement of position restates the position more forcefully in the light of the
arguments presented.

                              Planning a Writing Assessment Task
When planning your assessment task, consider the following;
1. Your assessment task needs to be contextualised. Children must have prior knowledge about the topic.
2. It is not a test. You do not have to remove environmental print or classroom displays.

Suggested model of implementation for assessment task;
1. Identify the text type that you will be teaching.
2. Identify a topic that the students have personal experience or prior knowledge about.
3. In pairs, students share knowledge
4. Recall knowledge of the text type (if students have been exposed to this text type before)
5. Record key words of white board for display
6. Think-pair share: Students discuss what they will write
7. Pre-test: students write independently
8. Collect students' pre-test and analyse. Record observations on writing profile
9. Make generalisations about the writing of the chidlren you assessed and record on class profile summary sheet.
