The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to accelerate the development of
medication for the treatment of Substance-Related Disorders (SRDs) by soliciting research
applications to support a diverse array of preclinical and/or clinical research projects. The goal is to
fund medication studies that will have high impact and quickly yield the necessary results to advance
Abstract:
medications closer to FDA approval. It is expected that these U01s will be short -term (funded for up to
3 years) and large (up to $5 million per year) cooperative agreements with close monitoring and
significant scientific involvement of NIDA staff. This funding mechanism will enable critical medications
development studies that would not be feasible using the traditional R01 mechanism.

Title: Ribosomal Disorders and Their Role in Inherited Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes (R01) PA -11-121

Sponsor: National Institutes of Health

Deadline: October 5, 2011

This FOA issued by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Institute of
Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases encourages applications from
institutions/organizations that propose collaborative research projects by multi -disciplinary
teams to advance our understanding of molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying
ribosomal dysfunction. These research areas include effects on hematopoiesis and their role
Abstract: in bone marrow failure syndromes. Multi-disciplinary expertise across basic and clinical
components is encouraged. To meet the objectives of this FOA applicants are encouraged to
integrate ribosomal biology with bone marrow failure to develop and characterize models of
            ribosomopathies.

The FOA will support projects that integrate multi-investigator, multidisciplinary approaches
with a high degree of interplay between clinical components of Bone Marrow Failure (BMF)
and experimental approaches to ribosome biology. Collaborative teams supported by this FOA
could include researchers from such fields as biomedical, physical, and informatics
disciplines. Applications that do not include biomedical experiments to validate models of
ribosomopathies will not fit the stated goals of this FOA.
