MVCTC Students Participate in Investment Simulation Game
Clayton, Ohio – Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) Financial
Management students recently participated in a portfolio investment simulation
game at Sinclair Community College. The event sponsored by Deloitte & Touche
was titled "Investing in the Future", and targeted Dayton- area high school
students to promote the accounting profession. Over 100 high school students
from the Miami Valley area participated in the event.
Students learned the importance of saving and investing their money early to
save for retirement. Topics discussed during the simulation included stocks,
bonds, dividends, 401 (K) plans, compound interests, asset allocation,
diversification, and money market funds. Students invested $500 over the
course of a ten-year period. They had the opportunity to buy and sell their stocks
or bonds based on the market impact on an annual basis.
MVCTC Financial Management instructor, Carrie Wiant, said, “This was a great
event that got the students excited to learn about stocks, bonds, and
investments. The Portfolios program does a great job explaining the concepts to
the students and walking them through the entire process. It is wonderful to see
the students excited about learning concepts covered in class.”
Mrs. Wiant and 19 of her Financial Management students attended the event.
Two of the MVCTC senior students, Sarah Braun (Patterson Career Center) and
Kayla Knox (New Lebanon) placed in the top three at the event.
Students in the MVCTC Financial Management Program will learn highly skilled
training such as banking, computer technology, and accounting procedures for
an in demand career field. After completing the two-year program students
would be able to pursue careers as an Accounting Clerk, Bank Teller,
