Psychology Why choose Psychology? Psychology is the study of human experience and behaviour. It tries to help you understand both your own and others' behaviour. If you have ever wondered why you feel stressed out, forget important information, laugh at jokes you don't understand, then psychology can provide you with answers. This subject combines well with both the arts and science subjects and encourages students to analyse the world around them. What can I expect to learn? In Year 12 you will look at the 4 main perspectives of Psychology- Biological, Cognitive, Behavioural and Psychodynamic. This will give you an insight into how Psychology evolved and how different perspectives can explain issues such as mental health, memory the body’s reaction to stress and the effect of environment on children. You will also study 10 key psychological studies and research methods. In year 13 you will be able to study Forensic Psychology, which is a unit on criminal psychology looking at issues such as offender profiling and how juries make decisions. Other topics include memory, relationships and ethical issues. You will also take an advanced module on research methods. Where can this lead? If you are already considering a Psychology degree, this A level will provide the grounding that you need. You may also thinking about a career in a Psychology profession such as Educational, Clinical, Occupational or Forensic Psychology. Psychology combines well with biological sciences and social sciences and would be well worth considering for any kind of career where understanding behavior is helpful. This would include medicine, teaching, social work, business and management, the civil or armed services. The opportunities are endless! Entry requirements: 5 passes at GCSE at grade C or above and although not essential passes in English, Maths and Science are desirable.
